MTV Pulling Plug On Web-Only Version Of 'Headbangers Ball'

Jose, who also works as a program director/DJ on SiriusXM Octane and Liquid Metal, says that the decision to end "Headbangers Ball" was not a cost-cutting move. "Right now, it doesn't really cost [MTV] anything, 'cause I do it — I host it, produce it, edit it and do it all myself," he said. "But I guess it's just the odd man out of their lineup."

This is the most irritatingly unsurprising news of the day.

It wasn't the greatest thing ever, but it was something metal related sort of in mainstream media. That alone makes me sad to see it taken down.

But the mainstream media already does have a very high-quality, intelligent and broad metal show... You know, that metal show...

(to the idiots who don't see the sarcasm, well, go back to watching Eddie Trunk)

exactly...why does it matter...no one knew it was on. Plus it wasnt like they were pushing good bands on the real show or promoting metal in the states.

I would love to see a show that actually along with showing videos and interviews promoted fest and tours as well.

Or a video show where the show producers actually pushed bands and videos THEY cared about as opposed to ones played only because the label had the biggest budget.

Yeah, I mean, I certainly became a bigger fan of bands like VoiVod, Kreator, Motorhead, Helloween, etc because of Headbangers Ball.
I will NEVER deny that.

I get Nina's point. ANY mainstream show that promotes metal is certainly not a BAD thing.
I think what people forget though is that us in the know of the underground are NOT the target audience for this.

In this case, it's like going home with the Jabba-the-Hut lookalike who also has a confirmed case of herpes.
But hey, at least you're still getting laid!

This. Fuck the whole "at least metal is getting a shot at mainstream media."

If the show isn't doing metal justice, then don't bother.

exactly....on a postive note...MTV announced they are not canceling the show so Nina can still get her metal via them. They are just getting a new host.

I hate when people say...at least it is getting a mainstream push. Lots of metal survives through the underground. If a show isnt going to push this type of stuff....there really is no point. It is just going to show the latest trends / styles that are not really metal at all to begin with. As Jason even said....it is labels paying for bands they have anyway. I honestly dont know why anyone would waste thier time to watch it. You are better off just browsing YouTube videos to find stuff. Just look for a band you like and then look for recommendations on the side. I have discovered so many bands that way.

Once again, if you guys feel you are so KVLT and TROO and offended by the Ball, then you are not its target audience anyhow.
It's meant for folks to discover something new.
It was something important to me in 1987. Not now.

I guess I don't get as butt hurt over stuff like this as others.

I think the issue is that lots of younger fans who HAVE discovered underground music are quick to slam mainstream exposure almost as its a threat.

Well, some of us discovered bands from magazines, tape trading, ordering demos, seeing bands live, etc, and NOT through the internet.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the net as much as the next person, but its made a lot of nooBs feel they have been raging since 82, which is not the case.

Headbanger's Ball is good for someone who just got into metal or maybe for an old fan who gets a kick out of seeing the music he or she liked in the past on TV.
(IE - the main appeal of a show like THAT METAL SHOW, for example).

I get all your point, but still think you are all getting way too butt hurt on it.

no, I watched it growing up in the 80's. I still have hours and hours of all the good videos on VHS tape still.

It just isnt a relevant show the way it is now. With the internet / podcast / and web shows. There are better shows that are not as big doing a better job.

Speaking of fanzines....I picked up an incredible one. Cant think of the name....I will look when I get home. It is a nicely put together one with more cult / traditional / doom in it. Really well done interviews. Nice 5 page Manilla Road interview in it.

And I don't even get this whole 'internet' spiel. Do people just stop going to concerts and reading zines and ordering demos just because they have a computer?
I might be a keyboard jockey but I do all that stuff in unhealthy amounts....the web is just another insanely helpful tool.

I can't recommend the CHIPS & BEER zine enough. First issue even has a Manilla Road primer in it!

By the way, picked up HELL BENT FOR METAL #5 a few months back. You'd dig it. Portrait, Borrowed Time, Inquisitor, Cauchemar, Argus, Midnight Priest...
