I havent done this yet because im lazy, but Ken nailed it for.me too. Except grunge.. I love Soundgarden, AIC, and the Screaming Trees especially. I find Nirvana to be overrated(except for Bleach).

Wait, whats EDM?

Rio? I don't know whats that, either... maybe you mean an Ronnie James Dio or something? I dont know, the name sounds familiar, but I still dont understand what you mean..

RIO was a general label given to a bunch of avant-garde rock bands in the 70's involved in leftist politics and trying to turn rock music into "art" while combatting AOR and radio trends. They're very different from each other, but they tend to have a lot in common with other brands of heavy, rhythmic music like tech metal, heavy jazz/fusion, and 20th century classical music.

A lot of RIO is "chamber prog" - really dense, rhythmic music that combined electric guitar and bass with stringed instruments and insane drumming with a generally dark atmosphere. I think the origin of the style can be found in records like King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Henry Cow's Legend (no strings there though, but there are some woodwinds), and it's full-fledged in Univers Zero's self-titled debut. Some bands still make it. Zeuhl has some stylistic similarities, but it tends to be more operatic.

What about art rock? I thought it is nearly the same thing, trying to turn rock music into "art", hence the name Art rock.

Any specific defnition you got for art rock? Ive been getting really into that shit lately. Do you know Roxy Music? I really like them and want to discover more art rock artists like them.

Have you seen straightedge kids with neon clothes headbanging to hack DJs? Now you know.

EDM is worlds apart from IDM, which is actually mostly excellent.

Skrillex =/= Aphex Twin.

I should add that I don't listen to holiday music either. It's invariably shit. The one exception is Sting's "If On A Winter's Night A Traveler" album.

I don't like corny feel good radio music, overproduced music, bit-crushed music, or artificial-product music. Can't stand Radiohead or Muse. In fact, fuck Muse and bands like them.

I do like: Folk, Blues, Jazz, Black/Death/Doom/Metal, 80s/70s Prog that isn't full of itself, Peter Gabriel & anything he touches, some Post-Rock, whatever you classify Oceansize as, Bluegrass, Soul, Motown, Funk, old-school hiphop (before it was all about cash and guns and hos), 60's Singer-Songwriters, Classical, Baroque, Chamber music, noise, and fusion.

As far as I know art rock is a sort of label for any rock music with artsy tendencies, whereas RIO was an actual historical movement (the bands held concerts together and everything). Sometimes people call RIO avant-prog because it tends to be more experimental than prog regularly is, and then they lump any "avant" rock bands in with that label, even if they weren't part of the RIO movement.

My exact thoughts, while I like few older Radiohead songs, cant also listen bands like Muse. And its funny how nowadays all these kids who listen to Muse think they are listening to some intelligent music compared to usual pop/rock.

As for the non-metal I listen to, well pretty much anything from classical to 60-80's rock and prog rock. Also some older pop songs and occasionally jazz.

I liked michael jackson albums Bad, Thriller and Off the wall. These 3 are his best. Outside these 3, everything else by him fails to excite me much.

I also like neo-prog rock, there's some really good artists in the genre. But sadly that genre is kind of dying these days, not enough bands in the genre. Its mostly 80's/90's stuff that I listen to, not newer bands.

I also like listening to elvis from time to time. And another guy that died back in 60', Eddie Cochran. He looks really similar to Elvis, and sings similar to Elvis, heheh...He really imitated Elvis well. But he wasnt Elvis impersonator, i think his similarities was more like a coincidence than an intentional kind of thing.. But I dunno exactly.

And then of course, there's the classical stuff....beethoven, mozart compositions. And sonata's/piano solo's. Really helps build a better atmosphere.

That was amazing, thanks! Yeah I really need to start getting into that shit real soon. I just didnt find the opportunity yet, haha!

It sounds like operatic prog rock to me, though. I guess it's meant to be like that, eh?

Intersting sounds going on there'...so zeuhl is like prog rock with more....eh, exotic sounds? eheheh

Can't stand Radiohead or Muse.

Don't lump those two together, post-2000 Radiohead rules. And while Jackson is a legend and a totally different thing in terms of style, I don't think he was ever a part of anything nearly as cool as Kid A. But yeah, ridiculous comparison, I know.

I don't feel like listing non-metal genres I like because I don't think it would give an accurate picture of my tastes. I'd much rather just list a whole bunch of artists I like, but I can't be bothered to do that now. Maybe later.

I dont get the big deal about Radiohead. Just sounds like a weird, pathetic experimental band to me. Never been a fan of that band and dont think I ever will be.

Both Radiohead and Muse are neckbeard art-for-art's sake bands, disseminated to the masses by the good graces of their royal highnesses. And in both cases, the output is... severely overrated, in a nice way to put it.

Now, stuff LIKE Radiohead but by other bands, that did it first? That stuff is good.

I understand why someone might see Radiohead's music as art for art's sake, but I still don't abide them being lumped together with Muse. I get none of the same vibe personally.

A lot of people have artists or bands they love to hate regardless of whether it's warranted or not, and critical acclaim and/or commercial success does make for easy targets. Don't know if that's the case here, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I certainly get that feeling from the post above.

DT are great in what they do, but many of their later albums, from like Six degrees onwards, sound very similar to each other with little difference in compositions. I think their musical diversity is most present in the 1989-99 period. Thats when they released really amazing stuff, including Falling into infinity which, many consider a terrible album, but I find it pretty good. Some tunes are really catchy on that one. But my all time favorite DT album would probably be Images & Words. That one really rocks hard.

Go for it sometime, man! I'm curious to hear.

Does some of you guys here really listen to that Zeuhl genre frequently? I only discovered that genre yesterday from hearing about it being mentioned in this thread, and surprisingly, never heard of that genre before that. And I think its great. Ive downloaded some Magma songs and they sound amazing.
