Hel yeah! This is what I call as a mood-music for the cold nights. Nordvargr is a project of Henrik Nordvargr (Mz.412, Toroidh, Folkstorm + many others) and is pure art called Dark Ambient Musick. To help you understand in where we´re floating right now is to mention few similar (or not so similar) acts like Yen Pox, Amon, Herbst9, Blood Box, Silent Watcher etc. So, if you recognize some of these names you can expect very deep voices and sounds straight from the deepest pits of Hel. These bands offer you a very special treat for horrific nightmares and the best soundtracks for your suicide.
Awaken is hauntingly minimalistic and possesses a good load of misanthropy and a vast, but very gloomy atmosphere. I can imagine a dark night, no stars in sight. Strange voices from all around creating panic for the solitary soul. Everything reeks of frost. Stench of oil and blood comes from a complex of factories made of steel. Blue distant flames in the horizon revealing the sulphur clouds and creatures slowly closing by... If you get my point, this is made out of nightmares. It is difficult to try to explain the "music" other way than this, it is just plain soundscapes.
If you´re into music, literally, this is not for you. But the ones who has a good sense for imagination and has his/hers inner eye wide open, this is a must! Act quickly, there´s only 1000 copies printed. I can´t thank Rauta enough for sending me this post-apocalyptic masterpiece of essence of all nightmares.

Nordvargr (the mind behind MZ.412, the now defunct Folkstorm, Toroidh, Hydra Head 9 and the eponymous project, plus probably a few more) has been particularly prolific over the last few months. I really can't count all the recent releases of his, considering the several different projects, an anthology ("Enter Nordvargr") and a massive ltd boxset containing I can't recall how many cds... crazy. "Awaken" has just been released - in a limited edition - by Eibon, this time teaming up with Code666 (www.code666.net), an Italian label mostly active in the post-black metal field (Aborym, Void of Silence, Thee Maldoror Collective, Ephel Duath...); one more sign of the rising connection between extreme metal and some forms of industrial and electronics. "Awaken" (8 tracks, 55 minutes) plunges you deep in a pit of anguish and despair. Obsessive dark ambient drones with a Lustmord feel, but pushed to even more extreme territories; cold and oppressive, powerful and obstinate in its solipsistic nightmares, dissolving and absorbing filtered voices, painful samples of screams and rattling noises, sparse orchestral parts and military drummings. Closer to the brutal approach of industrial noise and power electronics rather than academical ambient music, "Awaken" is a realistic representation of a total absence of light.

Nordvargr è una delle menti creative più prolifiche della scena industrial svedese, raggiunto solo da Peter Andersson di Raison d'Être in quanto a mole di produzioni. Questo sinistro personaggio è conosciuto per lo più in qualità di leader dei celeberrimi MZ.412, ma ha all'attivo una schiera di altri progetti non meno inquietanti, come Folkstorm, Toroidh e Hydra Head 9. "Awaken" è il primo lavoro completamente da solista di Nordvargr, ed esce qui in Italia grazie agli sforzi congiunti della giovane Code 666 (niente di più appropriato visto il personaggio) e della Eibon, fulcro principale dell'industrial italico assieme ad Old Europa Café. Lasciando da parte eccessi power-electronics e rituali satanici a ritmo di presse per metalli, Nordvargr si butta anima e corpo in un dark-ambient nerissimo e complesso, dal taglio fortemente cinematografico, dove masse di suono stratificate a livello sinfonico si accompagnano a rumori industriali (come pale di elicotteri, sonar e tonfi metallici), e voci dall'oltretomba compaiono e scompaiono. Particolarmente inquietante è "Hascimh", con vocalizzi demoniaci che duettano con urla di sofferenza lancinanti, mentre "Sulphur Mist" è quanto mai evocativa e concede spazio alle ritmiche marziali tipiche di Toroidh. Il CD esce in un'edizione limitata a 1000 copie in lussuoso digipack, perciò, se seguite le imprese di mr. Nordvargr e del dark-ambient/industrial in generale, vi consiglio di procurarvelo al più presto.

Black metallers incalliti, closed-minded e intransigenti non leggete questa recensione; soprattutto evitate commenti. questa non è musica per tutti. Attendevo questo lavoro da tempo, la mia ammirazione per Henrik "Nordvargr" Björkk, mente di MZ 412, è profonda da anni. Ho sempre considerato Björkk come il mastermind per eccellenza dell'industrial-ritualistik-muzic, autore di opere nerissime e veramente sconvolgenti come "Burning the Temple of God" o "In Nomine Dei Nostri Satanas Luciferi Excelsi". Sapevo che anche in questa occasione non sarei certo rimasto deluso, e così è stato. Anche questa volta l'ennesimo viaggio nelle dimensioni aberranti, concepite con tanta magnificenza, non è mancato. Sapevo che non avrebbe certo riproposto il passato, il genio non si consuma e non si esaurisce: devo ammettere di essere però rimasto parzialmente spiazzato da questo disco, che attendevo decisamente spinto verso sonorità industrial. Capita a tutti di farsi opinioni che poi divergono molto dalla realtà dei fatti. Questo album è una tiratura limitata a 1000 copie, per chi fosse interessato consiglio di non perdere tempo e di contattare direttamente la Code666. Si inizia con le atmosfere rarefatte della title track, molto ambient, suggestiva, evocativa, mi riporta alla mente quanto di meglio sia stato prodotto da Cold Meat Industry in ambito ambient. Il passaggio alla successiva Cellardweller è consecutivo: un accordo di chitarra distorta apre una song ancora spinta verso territori molto ambient. Devo dire che questa è stata l'autentica sorpresa di questo album: mi ha riportato alla mente i gloriosi Raison d'Être di "In Sadness, Silence and Solitude", eliminando a questi i passaggi più "gregoriani". Le ambientazioni sono grigie, i toni velati, suggestivi, le sonorità sempre molto sature, emarginanti: un lungo viaggio nell'inconscio, nelle angosce e nelle più tetre e perverse condizioni mentali. Seguono la nerissima "Kretslopp", "Lament" che sembra essere un'evoluzione della precedente con uno sfondo ambient molto sofferto, a ricordare appunto un lamento costruito su una base oscurissima; "Natt" decisamente orientata verso le sonorità più tipiche di MZ 412 con le percussioni ritualistiche scarne e marziali, disegnate su un tappeto sempre più emarginante, frequenti le infezioni con loops disturbanti. "Hashimh" riprende il tema di "Natt", riportando indietro l'ascoltatore di parecchi anni: un grido di infante destinato al sacrificio in nome del Signore delle Tenebre rompe la calma apparente, andando a insinuarsi direttamente nella parte inconscia del cervello: vi assicuro Signori che qui è l'apice della dannazione, il giusto pegno da pagare all'unico, vero, Signore della Notte; le percussioni marziali accompagnano l'operazione. Il bello di questo disco è che tutte le tracce sono direttamente correlate tra di loro, diversi episodi di un medesimo evento, ognuno caratterizzato da un "filo rosso" comune ma al contempo così particolari nella loro unione. "Sulphur Mist" è l'ultima parte del viaggio, è l'eggregore: il suono delle campane alla fine della traccia sembrano il richiamo del mondo della materia. E la fine arriva inesorabile accompagnata da un incedere veramente marziale, dai mantra del kersiste scandite da un ritmo tanto ripetitivo quanto ipnotico. "Seeds of Blood", la track conclusiva, è la più "musicale": scandita dai cupi echi di un timpano, accompagnata da una atmosfera maggiormente abbordabile (se mi passate il termine). Questo album è ricolmo di sofferenza, deviazione, album consigliato ai pochi demoni che si sono addentrati nell'ascolto di queste sonorità. Dischi come questo sono la rappresentazione, a mio parere, dell'estremo musicato, ben oltre i tempi da mattatoio di certo black metal contemporaneo scarno di feeling. "Black Ambient" è la definizione data dallo stesso Björkk a questa sua proposta musicale: non credo vi sia altro da aggiungere. La confezione è essenziale, come da sempre per MZ 412: non servono parole, fotografie. che parli la musica. Silenzio, signori, silenzio e adorazione. In Nomine Dei Nostri Sathanas Luciferi Excelsi.

Het is moeilijk een oordeel te geven over het eerste album van Nordvargr. Zij die niet van instrumentale muziek houden kunnen deze recensie dan ook met een gerust hart overslaan. Hetzelfde gaat op voor hen die niet van Ambient, Avantgarde, Industrial en Noise houden. Zijn er nog lezers over? Mooi, want voor hen is dit album misschien wel geschikt.
Nordvargr is het solo-project van MZ.412 brein ... MZ.412 is een van de grondleggers van de levende Industrial scene in Zweden. Met Nordvargr worden andere wegen ingeslagen. De acht nummers op 'Awaken' zijn eigenlijk geen echte nummers maar meer soundscapes die komen en gaan zonder enige aankondiging. Net zoals dit album zonder enige aankondiging een maand geleden werd uitgebracht. Bij de eerste luisterbeurt komt 'Awaken' dan ook niet goed tot zijn recht, dat is pas het geval bij de vierde of vijfde luisterbeurt. Er zit weinig tot geen structuur in de muziek en soms klinkt de muziek als het intro van de meest harde en agressieve Black Metal plaat die maar denkbaar is. De agressieve en harde passages blijven echter achterwege op 'Awaken', net als de zang. Pas in "Seeds of Blood (acts 1-11)" komen we iets tegen wat in de verste verte op zang lijkt. Maar daarvoor komen we al zeven andere songs tegen. Die songs komen, net als "Seeds of Blood..", het beste tot uiting als ze op het juiste moment worden gedraaid. 'Awaken' is geen album wat je even rustig op de achtergrond wegdraait, want dan gaat de muziek geheel bij je langs. 'Awaken' ontplooit zich pas voor je wanneer je al het overige vergeet, je koptelefoon opzet en je bij de muziek neerlegt. Soms klinkt het alsof ... graag een soundtrack voor een Horror film zou willen schrijven, maar het klinkt toch vooral alsof ... graag eens wat anders zou willen doen. Dat is in ieder geval gelukt op 'Awaken'. 'Awaken' zal ongetwijfeld zijn weg naar de liefhebber weten te vinden. Of jij ook tot die selecte groep van liefhebbers behoort is daarbij nog een vraag waar jij alleen antwoord op kan geven. Het album is naar mijn weten alleen verkrijgbaar via de websites van Code666 en Eibon Records. Wees er wel snel bij want 'Awaken' is met 1000 exemplaren slechts beperkt verkrijgbaar en zal in de toekomst niet weer opnieuw worden uitgebracht...

Dalla fruttuosa collaborazione fra due delle label più interessanti in Italia, Code666 ed Eibon, prende vita questo cd limitato a mille copie del mastermind degli svedesi Mz412 Nordvargr. Darkambient scurissimo ed impenetrabile negli otto episodi di questo Awaken, disco che vede il buon Villa allontanarsi dalle atmosfere rituali degli ultimi Mz412 per gettarsi in un limbo in cui lunico valore è rappresentato dallermetico, gelido vuoto anticomunicativo delle basse frequenze. Oscurità palpabile e viscosa che si dirada per pochi istanti allapparire degli arrangiamenti di archi, ma poi ricade più pesante di prima sui cinquantaquattro minuti di questa opera. I suoni sono pieni e potenti eppure volutamente rugginosi, involuti, tesi a sondare le profondità mentali dellascoltatore con una sottile invasione subliminale, con una sorta di psicoterapia imposta. Non ci credete? I sedici minuti di Seeds Of Blood (Acts 1-1) vi aspettano per dimostrarvi che quando i tamburi entrano sotto pelle, diventa difficile riprendere a camminare come prima. Se gli Mz 412 spaventano, ed è innegabile, Nordvargr anestetizza per poter colpire meglio, con più calma, per poter estrarre la ghiandola pineale e guardare dentro le vostre paure con gli occhi del chirurgo. Per la stima che nutro per questo artista e per i suoi progetti, tendo ad essere ipercritico con ogni uscita targata Mz 412 o Nordvargr e se, allimmissione sul mercato, avevo criticato tanto il vecchio Burning The Temple Of God quanto le recenti gesta dei Folkstorm, non trovo alcun punto debole in Awaken, perfetta sintesi delle influenze che da sempre venano la proposta di questo collettivo svedese. Un disco che non aggredisce né assorda, ma scava nello stomaco e nel cervello di chi lo ascolta e mette a nudo il mucchio dossa e carni di pochissimo valore che siamo. Uno dei dischi dellanno per me; nella mia top ten delle migliori cose targate Mz412 è secondo solo al clamoroso Nordik Battle Signs. Da avere.

A name that I've heard and read about a thousand times on the
Internet, but unfortunately never heard until now. "Awaken" is a dark
ambient masterpiece with gloomy and atmospheric sounds. It creates a dark
underworld with eerie landscapes that cannot and will not exist anywhere
but in the shadows of the mind. Some parts of this music actually reminds
me of my own project (Svartsinn) at times, but more surfaced and perhaps
with a less melodic approach. Nordvargr has the gift of staying with a dark
mood and keeping it alive for a long time without it ever getting boring.
He also uses some low vocal stunts and there is a fuzzy guitar cut in
there. Nordvargr is known from several other projects and the most known of
them is probably MZ412 which is a Power Electronic act and much noisier.
"Awaken" has such a haunting and mind shivering mood that I'm sure this
music will make someone's nights sleepless and someone elses parties more
interesting. (Isn't that right Hærleif?) If dark and utter dark soundscapes
is you thing, then you will (just as me) have a thrill over this album.

Weirdness at its highest degree!!! This sober atmosphere manages to even scare the hell of an angry pissed off listener since the grave dark note of low tonalities discourages any left desire of positivism, optimism or even life! Thicks really sick mind (MZ.412) is the one who conceived this solo project and this is in the line of Industrial trend promoted by CMI label being at the same level with other Swedish bands that follow it. Roars, effects, choirs, intonations, desperate cries, a horror atmosphere of suspense and anxiety, fear, hopeless thoughts, death what else can I say when listening to such tunes? Seeds Of Blood is a track of 15 minutes with an overwhelming strange aura specific to horror movies developing itself on mystical occult and bleak themes! Id say this is a genuine spectacle of Black Ambient and I believe there is no way for this not to completely satisfy the curiosity of the darkest and most sinister minds! Absolutely Diabolic! Nevertheless, I think it is a little boring for more than two or three successive auditions, but this is definitely not the fragile face of the album Rating: 0.80/1 (09.12)

Ormai Mr. Nordvargr ha raggiunto un limite di prolificità discografica che farebbe anche paura al maestro del rumore giapponese Merzbow. Ma se il terrorista dagli occhi a mandorla Masami Akita ha quasi sempre pubblicato sotto la sua consueta egida caotica, lo svedesone ex- MZ.412 ha pubblicato decine e decine di lavori sotto i più svariati nomi e tutti differenti per quanto concerne lestrazione sonora. Eibon in collaborazione con Code666 ci presenta quindi lennesima incarnazione di Nordvagr, proposta già ascoltata in occasione del CD edito da Fluttering Dragon e realizzato in coppia con Drakh (che deve essere sempre lui!). Se Cold Void of Nothnig ruotava attorno a fredde elaborazioni puramente ambient, Awaken amplifica laspetto più nero, più MZ.412 oriented, un ritorno a proposte più marcatamente True Swedish Black Industrial, dicitura sbattuta concretamente in quel manifesto supremo di In Nomine dei Nostri edito da CMI parecchi anni fa. Quindi via libera a fosche e maligne orchestrazioni di provenienza infernale, uninterpretazione che raggiunge il suo apice in una lunga e malvagia Seeds Of Blood che ha anche lonore di chiudere il CD. In ogni caso fate attenzione che si tratta di un CD consigliato per gli amanti del genere, dedicato a chi vive di pane e black-ambient. Un viaggio solo andata per linferno, senza alcuna possibilità di risalire, impresa difficile per i neofiti ma altrettanto impossibile per i cultori

Spawned in the grim workshop of Villa Bohult, 'Awaken' is a Dark Ambient experience presenting sick and twisted nightmare soundscapes. The music emerges from a fundament of drones, string and wicked voices and it flows vididly into the listening environment. There is sometimes an Omenesque feeling to the music while it also makes me think of Lustmord at times.
The sick, tormented wails of 'Hascimh' along with a limping rhythm creates a very deranged atmosphere. The vocals generate a really scary effect since these vocals - unlike those of many of Nordvargr's other projects - sound awfully realistic. In general, the album paints dark images of the subterranean torture chambers of medieval Europe: Skeletonised humans tied
> to wheels, having their last flesh pulled off with pincers; red-hot lead, poured over naked human skin; tortured heretics screaming in pain, blinded by their own blood, coagulating over their eyes etc. etc.
Nordvargr has once also been experimenting with some aspects of the Black Metal sound, yet this experimentation is only of small scale and there are no actual Black Metal tracks on Awaken. Just a section of polyphonous distorted guitar in the entrance to the second track. Like on Nordvargr/Drakh's Cold Void of Nothing. The effect is an substantial and somber one which go in unison with the rest of the album. It is nice to see that some still realise the potentional of Black Metalesque guitars, if
used in a proper way of course.
This may to be Nordvargr's prime jewel however. Yet it is definitely a piece worth checking out if you are a fan or Nordvargr's music or a fan of
twisted Dark Ambient music in general. Awaken gently tucks you in and set you of on a journey to nightmare land. Yet true to the name of the album, don't expect to sleep tight.

The Italian label Eibon Records released two new albums, one by Canaan ("A calling to weakness") and "Awaken" by Nordvargr. Nordvargr is alo called the Swedish dark ambient maestro of Sweden, due to his co-operation with Drakh ("Northern darksupremacy", LSDO, USA and "Cold void of nothing" LP/CD, Fluttering Dragon, Poland) and his involvement in MZ 412, a project that released several albums on Cold Meat Industry. The music on "Awaken" can be described as thick, massive and utterly dark soundscapes of black ambience, bringing you in a deep black maelstrom of sonic landscapes. The eight tracks on this strictly limited digipack (1000 copies), can be compared with projects like Folkstorm, Econocon and Toroidh; dark, threathening ominous sounsdcapes, sometimes with guitars on top of thundering electronics. Drifting layers of massive drones have been combined with desolate moaning vocals. Utmost feelings of lonelyness, solitude and unpleasantness have been translated into a very interesting and strong musical palette, leaving the listener behind in full awareness of the darker side of life

Esce come coproduzione tra le due label italiane Code 666 e Eibon Records questo album di Norvargr, progetto musicale che porta lo stesso nome del suo creatore, famoso per essere la mente dei ben più noti MZ 412! La cosa stupefacente è che questo musicista svedese non si limita solamente a comporre materiale per i gruppi appena citati, ma è anche coinvolto in diversi altri progetti come ad esempio Folkstorm e Toroidh (tanto per citare i più conosciuti, ma in realtà la lista sarebbe molto più lunga...)! Stavolta ci troviamo di fronte ad un lavoro dai toni cupi e sepolcrali, suddiviso in otto tracce caratterizzate da sonorità gelide e opprimenti, alle quali talvolta si uniscono voci lontane e urla terrificanti che paiono provenire direttamente dalloltretomba. Puro black ambient senza compromessi, che vi farà letteralmente gelare il sangue nelle vene, ma che al tempo stesso vi coinvolgerà moltissimo se siete amanti di questo tipo di sonorità, e quindi pronti a recepire il significato più profondo di Awaken. Un brano come Seeds of blood sembra la colonna sonora di una vera e propria discesa agli inferi ed è uno dei punti più alti di questo lavoro, che comunque nella sua interezza raggiunge livelli degni del più assoluto rispetto. Da notare che lalbum uscirà in versione digipack (con booklet) limitata a sole 1000 copie e che non sarà mai più ristampato, per cui gli interessati faranno bene a procurarselo velocemente se non vogliono rischiare di perderlo!!!

Second CD under the Nordvrarg moniker for Henrik Björkk, the driving force behind MZ412, Folkstorm, Econocon and a few other projects. Very productive, this swedish musician is also known for being quite the loud and noisy type. However, with this "Awaken" album, he goes back in a sense to his previous album under this pseudonym, ""Cold Void of Nothing"", which had been a surprisingly calm and accessbile album in the midst of the various Folkstorm & co walls of noise.
Along the 8 tracks that form "Awaken", and most of all on the long final one, Nordvrarg oscillates between very calm soundscapes, muffled and rich in low frequencies, enriched with a few field recordings and "evil" spoken words ("Cellardweller"), and passages relying more on martial drums, in a way reminding of early In Slaughter Natives ("Seeds of Blood"). Anyway, there is no distortion to be heard here, except on the few electric guitar riffs on "Cellardweller". Calm and surprisingly clear, this album has the taste of a soundtrack, but keeps the dark, evil touch that sticks to all of Henrik Björkk's projects. The distant chimes and choirs and bells used on several tracks add to the otherwise very bleak music a slight "live" texture which is not without reminding, this time, of Raison d'Etre. You will have got it by now, even though "Awaken" was not released on Cold Meat Industry, here is the kind of dark ambient / industrial that the famous swedish label is used to bringing out.
Hypnotic and rich in deep drones, this album has its highs and lows, the first being the very good closing track (slightly more drum-based and changing), while my attention drifted away more in the middle of the CD, when Nordvrarg seems to have gone as far as he could with the recipe he set up in the first tracks, and is then repeating himself. Still, the whole thing works relatively well, taken as a very ambientish piece of music, and appealed to me a lot more than the "ambient" latest MZ412 album ("Domine Rex Infernum"). While clearly not rivalling with the beauty of ""Cold Void of Nothing"", "Awaken" could be a new hint to Mr Björkk, a signal that his un-noisy material is tastier than the overdriven one, and I guess this CD might be a first step in an adequate direction.

Lasciando da parte eccessi power-electronics e rituali satanici a ritmo di presse per metalli, Nordvargr si butta anima e corpo in un dark-ambient nerissimo e complesso, dal taglio fortemente cinematografico, dove masse di suono stratificate a livello sinfonico si accompagnano a rumori industriali (come pale di elicotteri, sonar e tonfi metallici), e voci dall'oltretomba compaiono e scompaiono. Particolarmente inquietante è "Hascimh", con vocalizzi demoniaci che duettano con urla di sofferenza lancinanti, mentre "Sulphur Mist" è quanto mai evocativa e concede spazio alle ritmiche marziali tipiche di Toroidh. Il CD esce in un'edizione limitata a 1000 copie in lussuoso digipack, perciò, se seguite le imprese di mr. Nordvargr e del dark-ambient/industrial in generale, vi consiglio di procurarvelo al più presto.

Black metallers incalliti, closed-minded e intransigenti non leggete questa recensione; soprattutto evitate commenti. questa non è musica per tutti. Attendevo questo lavoro da tempo, la mia ammirazione per Henrik "Nordvargr" Björkk, mente di MZ 412, è profonda da anni. Ho sempre considerato Björkk come il mastermind per eccellenza dell'industrial-ritualistik-muzic, autore di opere nerissime e veramente sconvolgenti come "Burning the Temple of God" o "In Nomine Dei Nostri Satanas Luciferi Excelsi". Sapevo che anche in questa occasione non sarei certo rimasto deluso, e così è stato. Anche questa volta l'ennesimo viaggio nelle dimensioni aberranti, concepite con tanta magnificenza, non è mancato. Sapevo che non avrebbe certo riproposto il passato, il genio non si consuma e non si esaurisce: devo ammettere di essere però rimasto parzialmente spiazzato da questo disco, che attendevo decisamente spinto verso sonorità industrial. Capita a tutti di farsi opinioni che poi divergono molto dalla realtà dei fatti. Questo album è una tiratura limitata a 1000 copie, per chi fosse interessato consiglio di non perdere tempo e di contattare direttamente la Code666. Si inizia con le atmosfere rarefatte della title track, molto ambient, suggestiva, evocativa, mi riporta alla mente quanto di meglio sia stato prodotto da Cold Meat Industry in ambito ambient. Il passaggio alla successiva Cellardweller è consecutivo: un accordo di chitarra distorta apre una song ancora spinta verso territori molto ambient. Devo dire che questa è stata l'autentica sorpresa di questo album: mi ha riportato alla mente i gloriosi Raison d'Être di "In Sadness, Silence and Solitude", eliminando a questi i passaggi più "gregoriani". Le ambientazioni sono grigie, i toni velati, suggestivi, le sonorità sempre molto sature, emarginanti: un lungo viaggio nell'inconscio, nelle angosce e nelle più tetre e perverse condizioni mentali. Seguono la nerissima "Kretslopp", "Lament" che sembra essere un'evoluzione della precedente con uno sfondo ambient molto sofferto, a ricordare appunto un lamento costruito su una base oscurissima; "Natt" decisamente orientata verso le sonorità più tipiche di MZ 412 con le percussioni ritualistiche scarne e marziali, disegnate su un tappeto sempre più emarginante, frequenti le infezioni con loops disturbanti. "Hashimh" riprende il tema di "Natt", riportando indietro l'ascoltatore di parecchi anni: un grido di infante destinato al sacrificio in nome del Signore delle Tenebre rompe la calma apparente, andando a insinuarsi direttamente nella parte inconscia del cervello: vi assicuro Signori che qui è l'apice della dannazione, il giusto pegno da pagare all'unico, vero, Signore della Notte; le percussioni marziali accompagnano l'operazione. Il bello di questo disco è che tutte le tracce sono direttamente correlate tra di loro, diversi episodi di un medesimo evento, ognuno caratterizzato da un "filo rosso" comune ma al contempo così particolari nella loro unione. "Sulphur Mist" è l'ultima parte del viaggio, è l'eggregore: il suono delle campane alla fine della traccia sembrano il richiamo del mondo della materia. E la fine arriva inesorabile accompagnata da un incedere veramente marziale, dai mantra del kersiste scandite da un ritmo tanto ripetitivo quanto ipnotico. "Seeds of Blood", la track conclusiva, è la più "musicale": scandita dai cupi echi di un timpano, accompagnata da una atmosfera maggiormente abbordabile (se mi passate il termine). Questo album è ricolmo di sofferenza, deviazione, album consigliato ai pochi demoni che si sono addentrati nell'ascolto di queste sonorità. Dischi come questo sono la rappresentazione, a mio parere, dell'estremo musicato, ben oltre i tempi da mattatoio di certo black metal contemporaneo scarno di feeling. "Black Ambient" è la definizione data dallo stesso Björkk a questa sua proposta musicale: non credo vi sia altro da aggiungere. La confezione è essenziale, come da sempre per MZ 412: non servono parole, fotografie. che parli la musica. Silenzio, signori, silenzio e adorazione. In Nomine Dei Nostri Sathanas Luciferi Excelsi.

Het is moeilijk een oordeel te geven over het eerste album van Nordvargr. Zij die niet van instrumentale muziek houden kunnen deze recensie dan ook met een gerust hart overslaan. Hetzelfde gaat op voor hen die niet van Ambient, Avantgarde, Industrial en Noise houden. Zijn er nog lezers over? Mooi, want voor hen is dit album misschien wel geschikt.
Nordvargr is het solo-project van MZ.412 brein ... MZ.412 is een van de grondleggers van de levende Industrial scene in Zweden. Met Nordvargr worden andere wegen ingeslagen. De acht nummers op 'Awaken' zijn eigenlijk geen echte nummers maar meer soundscapes die komen en gaan zonder enige aankondiging. Net zoals dit album zonder enige aankondiging een maand geleden werd uitgebracht. Bij de eerste luisterbeurt komt 'Awaken' dan ook niet goed tot zijn recht, dat is pas het geval bij de vierde of vijfde luisterbeurt. Er zit weinig tot geen structuur in de muziek en soms klinkt de muziek als het intro van de meest harde en agressieve Black Metal plaat die maar denkbaar is. De agressieve en harde passages blijven echter achterwege op 'Awaken', net als de zang. Pas in "Seeds of Blood (acts 1-11)" komen we iets tegen wat in de verste verte op zang lijkt. Maar daarvoor komen we al zeven andere songs tegen. Die songs komen, net als "Seeds of Blood..", het beste tot uiting als ze op het juiste moment worden gedraaid. 'Awaken' is geen album wat je even rustig op de achtergrond wegdraait, want dan gaat de muziek geheel bij je langs. 'Awaken' ontplooit zich pas voor je wanneer je al het overige vergeet, je koptelefoon opzet en je bij de muziek neerlegt. Soms klinkt het alsof ... graag een soundtrack voor een Horror film zou willen schrijven, maar het klinkt toch vooral alsof ... graag eens wat anders zou willen doen. Dat is in ieder geval gelukt op 'Awaken'. 'Awaken' zal ongetwijfeld zijn weg naar de liefhebber weten te vinden. Of jij ook tot die selecte groep van liefhebbers behoort is daarbij nog een vraag waar jij alleen antwoord op kan geven. Het album is naar mijn weten alleen verkrijgbaar via de websites van Code666 en Eibon Records. Wees er wel snel bij want 'Awaken' is met 1000 exemplaren slechts beperkt verkrijgbaar en zal in de toekomst niet weer opnieuw worden uitgebracht...

Dalla fruttuosa collaborazione fra due delle label più interessanti in Italia, Code666 ed Eibon, prende vita questo cd limitato a mille copie del mastermind degli svedesi Mz412 Nordvargr. Darkambient scurissimo ed impenetrabile negli otto episodi di questo Awaken, disco che vede il buon Villa allontanarsi dalle atmosfere rituali degli ultimi Mz412 per gettarsi in un limbo in cui lunico valore è rappresentato dallermetico, gelido vuoto anticomunicativo delle basse frequenze. Oscurità palpabile e viscosa che si dirada per pochi istanti allapparire degli arrangiamenti di archi, ma poi ricade più pesante di prima sui cinquantaquattro minuti di questa opera. I suoni sono pieni e potenti eppure volutamente rugginosi, involuti, tesi a sondare le profondità mentali dellascoltatore con una sottile invasione subliminale, con una sorta di psicoterapia imposta. Non ci credete? I sedici minuti di Seeds Of Blood (Acts 1-1) vi aspettano per dimostrarvi che quando i tamburi entrano sotto pelle, diventa difficile riprendere a camminare come prima. Se gli Mz 412 spaventano, ed è innegabile, Nordvargr anestetizza per poter colpire meglio, con più calma, per poter estrarre la ghiandola pineale e guardare dentro le vostre paure con gli occhi del chirurgo. Per la stima che nutro per questo artista e per i suoi progetti, tendo ad essere ipercritico con ogni uscita targata Mz 412 o Nordvargr e se, allimmissione sul mercato, avevo criticato tanto il vecchio Burning The Temple Of God quanto le recenti gesta dei Folkstorm, non trovo alcun punto debole in Awaken, perfetta sintesi delle influenze che da sempre venano la proposta di questo collettivo svedese. Un disco che non aggredisce né assorda, ma scava nello stomaco e nel cervello di chi lo ascolta e mette a nudo il mucchio dossa e carni di pochissimo valore che siamo. Uno dei dischi dellanno per me; nella mia top ten delle migliori cose targate Mz412 è secondo solo al clamoroso Nordik Battle Signs. Da avere.

A name that I've heard and read about a thousand times on the
Internet, but unfortunately never heard until now. "Awaken" is a dark
ambient masterpiece with gloomy and atmospheric sounds. It creates a dark
underworld with eerie landscapes that cannot and will not exist anywhere
but in the shadows of the mind. Some parts of this music actually reminds
me of my own project (Svartsinn) at times, but more surfaced and perhaps
with a less melodic approach. Nordvargr has the gift of staying with a dark
mood and keeping it alive for a long time without it ever getting boring.
He also uses some low vocal stunts and there is a fuzzy guitar cut in
there. Nordvargr is known from several other projects and the most known of
them is probably MZ412 which is a Power Electronic act and much noisier.
"Awaken" has such a haunting and mind shivering mood that I'm sure this
music will make someone's nights sleepless and someone elses parties more
interesting. (Isn't that right Hærleif?) If dark and utter dark soundscapes
is you thing, then you will (just as me) have a thrill over this album.

Weirdness at its highest degree!!! This sober atmosphere manages to even scare the hell of an angry pissed off listener since the grave dark note of low tonalities discourages any left desire of positivism, optimism or even life! Thicks really sick mind (MZ.412) is the one who conceived this solo project and this is in the line of Industrial trend promoted by CMI label being at the same level with other Swedish bands that follow it. Roars, effects, choirs, intonations, desperate cries, a horror atmosphere of suspense and anxiety, fear, hopeless thoughts, death what else can I say when listening to such tunes? Seeds Of Blood is a track of 15 minutes with an overwhelming strange aura specific to horror movies developing itself on mystical occult and bleak themes! Id say this is a genuine spectacle of Black Ambient and I believe there is no way for this not to completely satisfy the curiosity of the darkest and most sinister minds! Absolutely Diabolic! Nevertheless, I think it is a little boring for more than two or three successive auditions, but this is definitely not the fragile face of the album Rating: 0.80/1 (09.12)

Ormai Mr. Nordvargr ha raggiunto un limite di prolificità discografica che farebbe anche paura al maestro del rumore giapponese Merzbow. Ma se il terrorista dagli occhi a mandorla Masami Akita ha quasi sempre pubblicato sotto la sua consueta egida caotica, lo svedesone ex- MZ.412 ha pubblicato decine e decine di lavori sotto i più svariati nomi e tutti differenti per quanto concerne lestrazione sonora. Eibon in collaborazione con Code666 ci presenta quindi lennesima incarnazione di Nordvagr, proposta già ascoltata in occasione del CD edito da Fluttering Dragon e realizzato in coppia con Drakh (che deve essere sempre lui!). Se Cold Void of Nothnig ruotava attorno a fredde elaborazioni puramente ambient, Awaken amplifica laspetto più nero, più MZ.412 oriented, un ritorno a proposte più marcatamente True Swedish Black Industrial, dicitura sbattuta concretamente in quel manifesto supremo di In Nomine dei Nostri edito da CMI parecchi anni fa. Quindi via libera a fosche e maligne orchestrazioni di provenienza infernale, uninterpretazione che raggiunge il suo apice in una lunga e malvagia Seeds Of Blood che ha anche lonore di chiudere il CD. In ogni caso fate attenzione che si tratta di un CD consigliato per gli amanti del genere, dedicato a chi vive di pane e black-ambient. Un viaggio solo andata per linferno, senza alcuna possibilità di risalire, impresa difficile per i neofiti ma altrettanto impossibile per i cultori

Spawned in the grim workshop of Villa Bohult, 'Awaken' is a Dark Ambient experience presenting sick and twisted nightmare soundscapes. The music emerges from a fundament of drones, string and wicked voices and it flows vididly into the listening environment. There is sometimes an Omenesque feeling to the music while it also makes me think of Lustmord at times.
The sick, tormented wails of 'Hascimh' along with a limping rhythm creates a very deranged atmosphere. The vocals generate a really scary effect since these vocals - unlike those of many of Nordvargr's other projects - sound awfully realistic. In general, the album paints dark images of the subterranean torture chambers of medieval Europe: Skeletonised humans tied
> to wheels, having their last flesh pulled off with pincers; red-hot lead, poured over naked human skin; tortured heretics screaming in pain, blinded by their own blood, coagulating over their eyes etc. etc.
Nordvargr has once also been experimenting with some aspects of the Black Metal sound, yet this experimentation is only of small scale and there are no actual Black Metal tracks on Awaken. Just a section of polyphonous distorted guitar in the entrance to the second track. Like on Nordvargr/Drakh's Cold Void of Nothing. The effect is an substantial and somber one which go in unison with the rest of the album. It is nice to see that some still realise the potentional of Black Metalesque guitars, if
used in a proper way of course.
This may to be Nordvargr's prime jewel however. Yet it is definitely a piece worth checking out if you are a fan or Nordvargr's music or a fan of
twisted Dark Ambient music in general. Awaken gently tucks you in and set you of on a journey to nightmare land. Yet true to the name of the album, don't expect to sleep tight.

The Italian label Eibon Records released two new albums, one by Canaan ("A calling to weakness") and "Awaken" by Nordvargr. Nordvargr is alo called the Swedish dark ambient maestro of Sweden, due to his co-operation with Drakh ("Northern darksupremacy", LSDO, USA and "Cold void of nothing" LP/CD, Fluttering Dragon, Poland) and his involvement in MZ 412, a project that released several albums on Cold Meat Industry. The music on "Awaken" can be described as thick, massive and utterly dark soundscapes of black ambience, bringing you in a deep black maelstrom of sonic landscapes. The eight tracks on this strictly limited digipack (1000 copies), can be compared with projects like Folkstorm, Econocon and Toroidh; dark, threathening ominous sounsdcapes, sometimes with guitars on top of thundering electronics. Drifting layers of massive drones have been combined with desolate moaning vocals. Utmost feelings of lonelyness, solitude and unpleasantness have been translated into a very interesting and strong musical palette, leaving the listener behind in full awareness of the darker side of life

Esce come coproduzione tra le due label italiane Code 666 e Eibon Records questo album di Norvargr, progetto musicale che porta lo stesso nome del suo creatore, famoso per essere la mente dei ben più noti MZ 412! La cosa stupefacente è che questo musicista svedese non si limita solamente a comporre materiale per i gruppi appena citati, ma è anche coinvolto in diversi altri progetti come ad esempio Folkstorm e Toroidh (tanto per citare i più conosciuti, ma in realtà la lista sarebbe molto più lunga...)! Stavolta ci troviamo di fronte ad un lavoro dai toni cupi e sepolcrali, suddiviso in otto tracce caratterizzate da sonorità gelide e opprimenti, alle quali talvolta si uniscono voci lontane e urla terrificanti che paiono provenire direttamente dalloltretomba. Puro black ambient senza compromessi, che vi farà letteralmente gelare il sangue nelle vene, ma che al tempo stesso vi coinvolgerà moltissimo se siete amanti di questo tipo di sonorità, e quindi pronti a recepire il significato più profondo di Awaken. Un brano come Seeds of blood sembra la colonna sonora di una vera e propria discesa agli inferi ed è uno dei punti più alti di questo lavoro, che comunque nella sua interezza raggiunge livelli degni del più assoluto rispetto. Da notare che lalbum uscirà in versione digipack (con booklet) limitata a sole 1000 copie e che non sarà mai più ristampato, per cui gli interessati faranno bene a procurarselo velocemente se non vogliono rischiare di perderlo!!!

Second CD under the Nordvrarg moniker for Henrik Björkk, the driving force behind MZ412, Folkstorm, Econocon and a few other projects. Very productive, this swedish musician is also known for being quite the loud and noisy type. However, with this "Awaken" album, he goes back in a sense to his previous album under this pseudonym, ""Cold Void of Nothing"", which had been a surprisingly calm and accessbile album in the midst of the various Folkstorm & co walls of noise.
Along the 8 tracks that form "Awaken", and most of all on the long final one, Nordvrarg oscillates between very calm soundscapes, muffled and rich in low frequencies, enriched with a few field recordings and "evil" spoken words ("Cellardweller"), and passages relying more on martial drums, in a way reminding of early In Slaughter Natives ("Seeds of Blood"). Anyway, there is no distortion to be heard here, except on the few electric guitar riffs on "Cellardweller". Calm and surprisingly clear, this album has the taste of a soundtrack, but keeps the dark, evil touch that sticks to all of Henrik Björkk's projects. The distant chimes and choirs and bells used on several tracks add to the otherwise very bleak music a slight "live" texture which is not without reminding, this time, of Raison d'Etre. You will have got it by now, even though "Awaken" was not released on Cold Meat Industry, here is the kind of dark ambient / industrial that the famous swedish label is used to bringing out.
Hypnotic and rich in deep drones, this album has its highs and lows, the first being the very good closing track (slightly more drum-based and changing), while my attention drifted away more in the middle of the CD, when Nordvrarg seems to have gone as far as he could with the recipe he set up in the first tracks, and is then repeating himself. Still, the whole thing works relatively well, taken as a very ambientish piece of music, and appealed to me a lot more than the "ambient" latest MZ412 album ("Domine Rex Infernum"). While clearly not rivalling with the beauty of ""Cold Void of Nothing"", "Awaken" could be a new hint to Mr Björkk, a signal that his un-noisy material is tastier than the overdriven one, and I guess this CD might be a first step in an adequate direction.
