Ottimo ritorno questo del trio toscano rispondente al nome di Handful Of Hate, che, dopo due album ("Qliphotic Supremacy" del '97 e "Hierarchy" del '99) rilasciati dalla ora defunta Northern Darkness Records, e un EP ("Death From Above"del '01) uscito per la svedese Downfall Records, sembra ora finalmente aver trovato la propria condizione ottimale accasandosi nel sofisticato rooster della nostrana Code666. Una cosa è certa: con "Vicecrown"gli Handful Of Hate coronano in maniera eccelsa il loro decimo anno di militanza nella più truce scena black metal, e si aggiungono alla scarna, ma succosa lista di nomi italici (Frostmoon Eclipse, Sterminio, Forgotten Tomb, Aivarim?) che, ad armi pari, farebbero tremare tante tra le ben più note formazioni d'oltralpe. "Vicecrown" è un concentrato nerissimo di violenza esplicita e mirata, vomitata in faccia all'inerme ascoltatore, e con visibile piacere sadico da parte del trio responsabile del crimine sonoro. L'album si aggira stilisticamente nei dintorni musicali costeggiati da formazioni quali Dark Funeral in primis, poi Marduk, Setherial e Naglfar. Dunque se avete amato l'ultimo mastodontico parto dei Dark Funeral (all'anagrafe "Diabolis Interium"), e le cose più "raffinate" dei Marduk ("Nightwing" su tutte), precipitatevi ad acquistare il presente, non avete bisogno di continuare a leggere. Ma, per i più sospettosi: trattasi di un black metal di chiara matrice svedese, furioso e bollente, veloce e iconoclasta, dall'incedere potente e bellicoso. "Vicecrown" è un disco cupo e negativo, dalle tinte ombrose e violacee, che non lascia un attimo di respiro e bombarda le orecchie dell'ascoltatore per la totalità della sua durata. Si inizia con "I hate", vero e proprio manifesto musicale e lirico della band, che riassume e concentra in quatro minuti scarsi tutto l'odio e la violenza che i nostri hanno generosamente tenuto in serbo per noi. Un muro sonoro impenetrabile e denso, costruito su trame chitarristiche taglienti e glaciali, che si traducono in giri "melodici" di sicuro effetto (su tutti sentire a proposito "I Hate" e "Beating Violence"), mettendo in bella mostra un songwriting a dir poco maturo e ispirato, nonché una prestazione tecnica sempre all'altezza della situazione. La tensione si mantiene vertiginosamente elevata per l'intero platter, rischiando un calo solo in occasione di due episodi posti in explicit del disco, "Hierarchy in lust" e " Catharsis in Punishment", a dire il vero troppo marcatamente thrash/death (sembra a tratti di sentire i Necrodeath?). Ma questo non deve essere motivo di squalifica anzi, può anche essere prova di un approccio stilistico composito e vario. In ogni caso ci troviamo di fronte a un signor disco, massiccio, quadrato, spigoloso e tagliente, che fa fronte a testa alta alla nobile"concorrenza" svedese. Per inciso: chiunque abbia buttato i suoi soldi per l'ultimo dei Marduk, che li riscatti ora, e li spenda per qualcosa che ne vale il prezzo! Perché "Vicecrown" è superiore a tutte le ultime uscite partorite in Svezia nel corso dell'anno, leggasi Marduk in primis, ma anche Naglfar e Setherial. Dunque perché ingrassare gli svedesi e lasciare a bocca asciutta i nostri ben più meritevoli connazionali? Accorrete.

It?s about time for a new Keep of Kalessin. I love those guys. It?s funny, too, ?cause they do what so many other bands do: the speed, the aggression, the melody. The sensation of gorging on lightspeed brutality. Hell, the ride cymbal alone is worth it.

Handful of Hate? More like *TruckLOAD* of Hate. Jesus Christ! Out from the starting blocks, this excellent Italian band deliver the kind of goods that would make Keep of Kalessin grin every so slightly in profound approval. Intense, fast, fast, fast songs with eminently hummable riffs. And the ride cymbal. That fucking ride cymbal. Like an interminable sequence of machete chops, dry and crisp and powerful.

Sebbene il metal non fa parte della mia personalissima track-list, ho ascoltato (ed apprezzato) parecchie cose di impronta black-metal e non. Nera e sulfurea sigla su cui si basa il terzo album degli italianissimi Handful of Hate, poco meno di 40 minuti timbrati a fuoco nei gironi infernali della Code666. Album breve, preciso, freddo e spietato. Nove brani, nove scheggie velocissime, quasi imprendibili. Un black-metal forsennato, sostenuto da una tecnica chirurgica e da una registazione fin troppo cristallina. E qui potrebbero cadere i primi difetti di un comunque buon lavoro. Manca quel patina nera, quell?atmosfera nordica tipica dell?atteggiamento grezzo di Darkthrone. Quel nero impenetrabile che lascia trasparire accecanti sprazzi di luce bianca, rasoiate secche afflitte da uomini senza volto. Tralasciando questo aspetto che ormai fa parte di una scena morta e sepolta, ?Vicecrown? rappresenta senz?altro un ottimo esempio di metallo nero, imperdibile per gli amanti del genere.

L'underground italiano pullula di realtà black: decine di gruppi nascono e muoiono tutti i giorni nel più totale anonimato (qualcuno lo chiamerebbe "culto") senza lasciare la benché minima traccia del loro passaggio se non qualche demotape mal registrato. A volte però la tenacia e la coerenza premia le bands più convinte, che dopo anni di gavetta riescono ad emergere e a farsi conoscere al grande pubblico. E' questo il caso degli Handful of hate, presi sotto l'ala protettrice della Code666, che ha appena rilasciato (ad 8 anni di distanza dal loro primo demo) questo ottimo "Vicecrown", cd di black metal di impronta marcatamente svedese.
Ma passiamo alla recensione. Dal momento che finora la loro discografia non mi era piaciuta e anche in sede live non mi avevano soddisfatto, speravo di partire con una bella stroncatura... e invece niente! E' letteralmente impossibile trovare qualcosa che non vada in questo cd: 9 tracce di black metal alla Marduk con alcuni inserti death che rendono più vario l'ascolto regalando momenti di vero disagio all'ascoltatore. Davvero eccelse le prestazioni dei tre musicisti: volevano fare del male e ci sono riusciti! Pur non mettendosi in luce per l'originalità della propostasono riusciti a registrare un cd che può comodamente stare di fianco ai "maestri scandinavi" senza sfigurare minimamente, davvero un buon lavoro.
Gli episodi più significativi secondo me sono l'opener "I hate" dotata di un riffing davvero accattivante, la quarta "Boldly erected" dove gli H.O.H. dimostrano di saper gestire alla grande anche canzoni cadenzate e non solo song super-tiratissime classiche tipiche del loro sound. Verso la metà del disco le canczoni tendono a confondersi un po' ma per fortuna non mancano stacch ie passaggi divertenti che portano lisci fino alla fine e obbligano a far ripartire il disco dall'inizio. Un'ultima nota sulla produzione di quegli studi che qualcuno definisce gli Abyss italiani (sì sì sono i Fear di Ravenna), ed è quindi ovvio che tutto suona potente e non c'è niente fuori posto, quindi non ci sono scuse: se amate il black furioso "Vicecrown" è un acquisto obbligatorio. Supporto alla scena italiana.

They are evil, the Italians. At least these three. Furiously they attack, and we're not talking about A Handful Of Hate here, rather a big fat fist in the face. I Hate, is the name of the song, and any comparisons with Cradle Of Filth or Dimmu Borgir are far off. Rather Naglfar or Immortal, I'd say. True, old school black metal. Not like nowadays, with pop styled keyboards and the likes. True wrath, times nine, on plastic, bon appetite! I'm telling it like it is. The first, above mentioned song did a very well job in impressing me. Italy is hardly the country you usually associate with black metal, but rather with the by me so beloved genre "melodic power metal avec chant sans cojones", and therefore HANDFUL OF HATE is a nice surprise, when Autumn's finally showed its claws, and big brother Winter is coming knocking at the door. Somehow fits the season better. And, as said, I Hate and its companions make me want more. It is pretty obvious these guys have a few years of practice behind them. Vicecrown is not the debut, but album number three, and thus, a certain professionalism is to be expected. If all songs would have been as cool as I Hate I'd already have told you to go get the album, but it seems like a certain amount of repetition has managed to crawl along, and well... I'm totally confident that these guys from pastaland will develop and hone their skill in writing versatile songs in the future, no doubt. They have a lot to offer in the way of hate, which is a feeling that should be nurtured, as it is a very driving force. The same attitude, the same power, but songs that are a bit more different from each other, and bands like CoF, D.B. and the likes could piss off. For people who can't take the fact that Immortal has split, try HANDFUL OF HATE. It will be worth it.

These guys, previously this "Vicecrown", has already released a demo (1995's "Goetia Summa"), two full lengths (1997's "Qliphothic Supremacy", 1999's "Hierarchy 1999") and a 7'' EP (2001's "Death from Above"). Musically speaking, there's nothing on this album that we haven't heard before, but almost everything in metal have been done, perhaps overdone as well before, now isn't it? Anyway, Italy's band does what do with a genuine attitude. If not they wouldn't have managed to achieve what they have on this album. The Italian trio has put nine furious black metal tracks on this disc, following the tunes have come from Sweden the last couple of years. Dark Funeral, Marduk and Setherial are the blasphemous trio from which the Florence based band gathers the inspiration. Sometimes Handful of Hate fails to come up with fresh black metal due to a few songs not at the same level of the other ones but are just small episodes that don't affect the success of "Vicecrown". One of the most massive, spiteful, obscure albums in black metal camp this year.

2 years of silence after the "Death from Above" EP for the Swedish Downfall records and the Italian whipping demons are bloodthirstily back to excel themselves brutality-, songwriting- and skill-wise, availing themselves of a massive recording and mixing by the clever Paso at his Fear Studios in Alfonsine.
The matrix's still raw fast Black metal, yet they've increased the breaks bridging other Black final assaults like in "Beating Violence" or very brutal death guitar riffs as in "Risen from Abuse", or heavy crushing ones like in "Hierarch in Lust". Handful of Hate define it Carnal Black metal, but the truth is that their style is like a mix amongst Marduk, Dark Funeral, Enthroned and the almighty defunct Angelcorpse.
And don't expect all songs to do more than 100 Mph, since you can find excellent breaks but also an excellent and majestic, glacially diabolical mid-tempo-song called "Boldly Erected", whereas "Catharsis in Punishment" successfully takes from thrash, death and black evenly.
This band is SERIOUSLY one of the best METAL bands ever bred on Italian soil and I think the far-seeing Code666's stricken a bargain by having'em signed. If you don't buy this record, you're a jerk who can't recognize really worthy metal bands and therefore simply deserve annihilation.

I always trust Code666 to sign quality bands and I was not disappointed this time either. Handful Of Hate is an Italian band that formed in 1993 and have previously released two full-length albums through the now defunct Italian label Northern Darkness Records. This is sadly my first contact with the band but I assure you that I will follow them from now on. "ViceCrown" is violent and aggressive but at the same time melodic and intricate. If you like Angel Corpse or the newer works from Dark Funeral and Marduk you will surely enjoy this album as well. A powerful and flawless production from Paso at Fear Studio (Ephel Duath, Electrocution) makes the listening experience even more pleasant. This is the way black metal should be played. It is intense and furious and the only thing I have to complain about is that some songs are a little bit too similar to each other. Handful Of Hate are definitely one of the best Italian extreme metal bands at the moment.

A powerful and flawless production from Paso at Fear Studio (Ephel Duath, Electrocution) makes the listening experience even more pleasant. This is the way black metal should be played. It is intense and furious and the only thing I have to complain about is that some songs are a little bit too similar to each other. Handful Of Hate are definitely one of the best Italian extreme metal bands at the moment.

Gli Handful of Hate non avrebbero bisogno di molte presentazioni, ma cmq per chi non lo sapesse:
il gruppo toscano nacque nel 1993 come band dedita a un BM abbastanza tirato (ricordo ancora le foto molto impressive del loro debutto, in un intervista su un magazine),e purtroppo hanno dovuto affrontare diversi problemi anche pesanti, come la perdita, del loro bassista, per poi arrivare al demo del '95: "Goetia Summa", e ai due full-lenght del '96 e del '97 sotto la Northern Darkness rec.(ormai non piu' attiva):"Qliphotic Supremacy" e "Hierarchy 1999"; dopo l'uscita del 7'' per la svedese Downfall records il gruppo arrivo' nel 2002 al contratto con la Code 666 e questo "ViceCrown" e il risultato di quest'ultimo sodalizio.
Il genere lo definirei Death/Black Metal con notevoli influenze svedesi: Dissection, Dark Funeral,Setherial (non di Nord, ma quelli dal secondo in poi), e altri;
La registrazione e molto molto buona per ogni strumento, e le chitarre sono sempre pulite come è di solito una proposta di questo tipo, le velocita' sono sostenutissime, i riffs sono di vario tipo sia melodici che piu' oscuri, molto piu' Dark Funeral-Setherial che Dissection, anche per una questione di impatto;
La voce è sempre scream ma non esageratamente secca, e con una certa dose di riverbero, che la fa rimanere piu' in profondita' rispetto alle chitarre;
Il disco inizia con queste furibonde velocita' e non trova tregua se non in qualche stacco di stampo piu' propriamente Death Metal, con chitarre stoppate e , e qui potrei chiamare in causa i primi At the Gates che tanto hanno influenzato il death e il BM svedese dai primi '90 in poi, quindi sempre di Death europeo si parla;
poi arriviamo al quarto pezzo (Boldly Erected), che si distacca dai precedenti per il suo tenore piu' slow e misticheggiante; se proprio dobbiamo citare un'influenza death non europea, possiamo dire Morbid Angel, ma molto tra parentesi, anche perche' è uno dei gruppi death che ha influenzato di piu' certo BM.
Con la traccia 5 (Vexer's Kult) riiniziano le velocita' assurde, e qui i riffs assumono molto piu' che in altri casi la sonorita Dissection, anche se l'estremismo e molto piu' accentuato, ma le note mi ricordano il gruppo di Nodteveit per lo stile compositivo.
Piu' andiamo avanti e piu' i riffs sembrano intricarsi in maniera forsennata,e la traccia 6 "Carnal Spite" è senza dubbio la mia preferita, e il riff principale (quello dell'attacco) è davvero intrecciato.
Il brano successivo"Hierarch in Lust" e' di nuovo uno slow piu' in DM style, e la traccia "Catharsis in Punishment" assume ancor di piu' la veste DEATH M. se non Thrash distaccandosi in maniera vistosa dalla prima parte del cd (anche se ogni tanto gli stacchi velocissimi e svedesi ci sono).
Il pezzo conclusivo (la title track) mi riporta alla mente in maniera, molto vicina i Setherial di "Lord of the Night Realms", ed è forse la seconda track migliore.
In conclusione, il genere in questione non è il mio must (perche' sono attaccato a suoni piu' grezzi), anche se conosco bene e apprezzo i gruppi capostipiti del genere, ma devo ammettere che gli HoH sono davvero molto ma molto competitivi, e credo, che se il discorso dei riff intricati progredisce, arrivando a livelli assurdi tipo "Nord" dei Setherial, in futuro il gruppo potrebbe stupire; io dico questo perche'questa è la direzione che a me interessa di piu' nel genere D-BM di questo stampo... per il resto se seguite ed amate le sonorita' dei gruppi che ho citato come influenze di questa proposta, penso che questo cd dovete averlo.

Un'altro caso che conferma quella che secondo me in Italia è ormai piu' di una regola. Il movimento estremo sta diventando nella nostra nazione sempre piu ricco e forte e finchè le bands di casa nostra sfornano dei prodotti qualitativamente cosi elevati non c'è dubbio.. i generi estremi stanno dando un segnale forte sul momento musicale italiano del metal, cosi ci deliziamo dell'ultimo lavoro degli Handful of hate che in questo 9 tracks "Vicecrown" riescono ad esprimere quanto di buono la band ha ormai raggiunto. Maturità, stile, un black metal molto personale e senza eguali. Songs d'impatto senza tanti sotterfugi, diretto e acido, tagliente e potente, una mazzata sonora curata con grande devozione in tutti i minimi particolari e con il risultato di aver centrato appieno l'obiettivo di scuotere le adrenaline degli estimatori del genere che troveranno in questa uscita dei validi motivi per sentirsi orgogliosi di quello che l'Italia estrema riesce adesso a proporre. Molto interessante seppur lontano dal poterlo definire un capolavoro "Vicecrown" degli Handful of hate è un prodotto vivamente consigliato.

Die Italiener HANDFUL OF HATE liefern hier eine Hand voll Hass ab, und zwar derart laut und böse, dass man gar nicht nach der Auswirkung größerer Portionen als einer Hand zu fragen vermag. Man mag es kaum glauben ? zehn Jahre besteht die Band nun, die hier mit ?Vicecrown? nicht nur ihr drittes Lebenszeichen von sich gibt, sondern ein schwarzmetallisches Inferno, wie man es ? vor allem aus Italien ? heutzutage selten hört.
Und wenn ich ?Inferno? sage, meine ich auch ?Inferno?. Der Opener ?I Hate? kennt keine Gnade und wütet sofort durch die Gehörgänge, eine brutal schnelle Nummer, bei der auch Schlagzeuger Gionata Potenti seine Trommlerkünste unter Beweis stellt, und in der ein Gitarrenriff das nächste jagt. Dabei erinnern Handful Of Hate an die nordische Kombination Marduk, Dark Funeral oder Setherial, erbarmungslos hart und schnell jagen sie uns ihren Black Metal um die Lauscher, grandios sind auch die herrlich hasserfüllten Vocals von Sänger Nicola Bianchi ? die Herren kommen nicht nur vom Stiefel, sie treten auch gehörig und gekonnt damit in den Arsch und hauen einem mindestens eine Hand voll schwerer Riffs entgegen.
Auch etwas gediegenere Nummern wie z.B. ?Boldly Erected? walzen sich trotz Temporeduzierung mit bösartiger Brutalität durchs Hirn. Hass, Dunkelheit, und Böses werden eins und der fleischgewordene Hass in Gestalt der Italiener jagt uns durch die schneidend kalte Finsternis, eine ordentlich wuchtende Black Metal Keule schwingend. ?Hierarch In Lust? wühlt sich auch mit etwas weniger Tempo durch die Gehörgänge und ist trotz dessen eine gut einheizende Nummer, bei der man die Kopfumdrehungen pro Minute etwas zurückschrauben kann. Alles in allem eine ordentlich aggressive Black Metal Scheibe, die ich zum Antesten wärmstens empfehle, vor allem, weil nun langsam mein Weltbild vom eierkneifmetallenen Bella Italia zu bröckeln beginnt, und das finde ich ungemein gut.

Die Klangqualität der Aufnahme ist als sehr gut zu bezeichnen, wurde doch ein lebendiges Gleichgewicht zwischen, der beim Black - Metal so wichtigen, Räudigkeit und der, meiner Meinung nach, stets erstrebenswerten Homogenität gefunden. So präsentiert der Klang der Veröffentlichung nicht nur die Musik, sondern unterstreicht positiv deren Atmosphäre. Diese ist, wie nur sehr selten beim rasenden Black - Metal, sehr facettenreich und nicht nur von kämpferischem Hass geprägt. So gelingt es der Band produktiv sowohl melancholische, als auch aggressive Gitarrenlinien in ihren Stücken zu verarbeiten und diese elegant ineinander übergehen zu lassen. Das Drumming und damit die Geschwindigkeit bleibt dabei fast immer im höchsten Bereich, gleitet aber nie ins grindige ab. Der Gesang ist ausschließlich kreischend gehalten und weist desbezüglich keinerlei Variation auf. Dennoch wirkt er zu keiner Sekunde eintönig, ganz im Gegenteil prägt er die Atmosphäre der Musik maßgeblich und treibt sie somit gerade dadurch voran.
Der einzig kleine musikalische Nachteil besteht in der Tatsache, dass einige Sequenzen des, an sich hervorragenden Materials, etwas dünn wirken. Ein etwas anderes Arrangement wäre an jenen Stellen sicher besser gewesen. Jene Sequenzen allerdings fallen kaum ins gewicht und trüben den Hörgenuss kaum.
Die Texte der Stücke liegen mir leider nicht vor. Titel wie "ViceCrown Order (Dobermann)" und "Catharsis In Punishment" lassen allerdings eher Ungewöhnliches vermuten. Betrachtet man das für Black - Metal - Verhältnisse sehr ungewöhnliche Cover, so scheint dies allerdings nicht weiter überraschend.
Insgesamt stellt "Vicecrown" ein wirklich herausragendes Black - metal - Album einer ungewöhnlichen Band dar, welches wohl in sämtlichen Schichten der Szene Anhänger finden dürfte.

This band brings to mind bands like DISSECTION, IMPALED NAZARENE, DARK FUNERAL, the old black metal elite. In other words, too damn many to mention, but you get the idea. I don't know much about 'em, the album cover is enigmatic, a darkened chained torso with a pentagram on its upper back, but even that description doesn't do it justice. Disturbing would be the appropriate word.
The melodic layer buried toward the end of "Beating Violence" is really subliminal and incredibly effective. "Risen Into Abuse" has one of those black metal riffs that oozes punk, in the vein of the aforementioned IMPALED NAZARENE and perhaps, MARDUK. "Boldly Erected" is a slower paced track with some truly tasty blackened riffs. "Vexer's Kult" speeds things back up and you can hear the hunger in this band. Vicious, cutting like a knife, they sound razor sharp.
The other highlight for me was "Hierarch In Lust," that's five good tracks, so I suppose the final verdict is half killer, half filler.

Questo è un piccolo riassunto di quello che secondo me rende vincente questo "ViceCrown". Innovazione, dicevo, perchè non è soltanto un ottimo album di Black Meta: ci sono diverse sfumature e diversi elementi, (come qualcosa di Death americano), che così miscelati contribuiscono a dinamicizzare e a rendere così cattiva, potente e preziosa questa corona del vizio. Nove i movimenti di questo "ViceCrown".
