Norwegian vs. Norse?

The language I mean. Why, when it's been called Norse for so long, is it suddenly called Norwegian?

I just noticed the word being used on the
irc-chat some time ago....

I speak Norwegian, but Norse?! That sounds
like some very old Norwegian language
you're referring to! >P Hehe...

It's always been called Norwegian as far as I know. "Norse" has come to refer to Scandinavian things, rather than specifically Norwegian.

old norse it the more correct term. it's used a bit in the 13th warrior.. it was the swedish/norwegian language that the vikings used. and for us scandinavians it's known as fornnordiska.

I belive the language the Vikings used is Icelandic

True.

They used a very old Icelandic language.
The Norwegian language has developed
A LOT after this, but the Icelandic hasn't.
That's what I learnt at school anyway >P

Okay, maybe I got confused. It's just that my mom said it was called Norse back in the day but then it started being called Norwegian because of the bad connotations Norse got from the Vikings or something. I knew there were people from Norway here. So I decided to put it out there. My mom has a tendency to think she knows all about everything and then be wrong.
