Overall though I feel really bad for him. I don't think there's anyone else in rock that has been shat on that much. Dude got a box of shit sent to him in the mail, beat up after a show, suffers from manic depression, spent all this time and effort making this Saana CD and now this happens lol.

I just don't believe a thing that comes out of Tolkki's mouth anymore. First the masters were stolen, and now all of a sudden he has an indie company releasing his disc, and Frontiers is releasing MP3s?

Knowing Tolkki, Frontiers did not breach the contract and Frontiers has every right to release what they have. I wouldn't be surprised if Frontiers issues a statement saying the release of Saana at theground.com is illegal and sues.

Think you missed the point that I was merely making a joke. Short of a deranged GG Allin performance, or an R Kelly video, I have never heard of anyone being pissed upon on stage. So the mere fact that someone involved in that sort of behaviour is now caught up in (yet another) seeminlgy staged, overtly dramatic performance seems humorous. Hence, a reference between the imagery presented in the post of Mr. Tolkki being "shat upon" (can't use the word "shat" enough ), and Mr. Tolkki having been pissed upon, seemed to good to pass up.

Seriously, I feel bad that Tolkki obviously is fighting some serious mental problems (much like Midnight, perhaps), and as much as I hope this disc is worht listening to, I am highly skeptical. His last solo effort and the last Strato album both were extremely sub-par, so I will be very reluctant to purchase this one without hearing much of it first.

Well, I agree, it's hard to tell sometimes what's going on. While Frontier apparently issued this statement:

"Frontiers Records would like to inform all press and fans that the release of TIMO TOLKKI's 'Saana - Warrior of Light Part 1: Journey to Crystal Island' rightfully belongs only to the label for the entire world.

"Frontiers has indeed signed a regular exclusive License Agreement for it which, notwithstanding the statements of Mr. Tolkki, is still rightful and legal and all due sums have been paid against the production of the record.

On another forum, Jennifer Sowle, one of the lead vocalists, posted this:

Hello all!

What Frontiers records is trying to do is to actually release what little they now have of Saana (low-quality MP3s and the picture linked above picture, which is a low resolution jpeg that is not even the final version and is not usable for printing a proper CD cover) .

The only places to get OFFICIAL information about March 3rd release of "Saana-Warrior of Light" are:

If the theft of the masters was a ploy, though, it would appear that it was directed at the label to prevent them from demanding them, not a marketing scheme.

Honestly, I wish it would all be worked out with the legal peeps behind closed door. I don't like the drama or feeling like a pawn.

ive heard some strange things about timo. someone told me once i think that he made up some big huge story that all turned out to be a lie, but i dont remember any of the details. could have been a rumor i suppose

Timo Tolkki has issued this statement on the Stratovarius forum and his personal MySpace. Sounds like a typical argument where a musician want to do something different and the label wants something that has worked for that artist in the past. Here's a few excerpts:

Frontiers REJECTED the production master that I sent them and sent them back to me. This is exactly the same record that they are now ”proudly presenting” and selling on their homepage. They tried to get me to go back to the studio to write more ”Metal songs” and to quote them ”just insert them in between somewhere there”. Needless to say after 2500 hours of work and a clear concept of 2 album storyline including a filmed format doesn’t allow anything like that

They claim that the album should not contain any instrumental music and that the album is ”mostly instrumental music”. Keeping in mind the storytelling nature of a Rock Opera or musical, I challenge you to find a piece that doesn’t have instrumentals. Out of 16 tracks , 11 tracks contain vocals.
Frontiers continues by stating that the album should be 45 minutes long according to the contract. The album is 44:10 long. This doesn’t really need any comment…

Frontiers Records hasn’t got the necessary parts to be able to produce a cd in the way that it is of high quality. Yet, they seem to intend to manufacture cd’s out of MP3 files and booklet from 2 low resolution jpegs they have. They don’t have lyrics or any information regarding the album details.

Frontiers has a reputation for putting out a certain kind of music. They would not have signed Tolkki for this project if he hadn't given them assurances that he was going to produce something consistent with what Frontiers sells.
