note to metal bands: the whole "pink floyd" thing isn't cool anymore

Pink Floyd > metal

Dark Side of the Moon < most of the rest of Pink Floyd

imo, Pink Floyd are to be acknowledged for their innovative (back then) use of synths and studio experimentation. the best songwriting (imo), however, is on their first album (Piper at the Gates of Dawn) and was mostly done by Syd Barrett who lost it not long afterwards (after too much acid). I prefer 1970s bands like Genesis, King Crimson, and ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) over Pink Floyd. Better compositions, better musicianship.

On-topic: Pink Floyd influences are way too obvious imo in some Enslaved albums (Monumension I think it was), in Anathema (new style), in Porcupine Tree, in Opeth (later albums), and another band which I just forgot...

now that's just fucking ludicrous

at least you could indicate what according to you are the best PF songs, on which albums they are, et cetera

it would help the discussion - if we're all just ranting away we don't need a forum right?

that's easy enough, Meddle, Animals & Wish You Were Here are all vastly superior to Piper, IMO (and in the opinion of pretty much 50 billion Floyd fans)

I'm in fact near-certain that the only reason anyone would ever say Piper is that good is because the mysterious, drug-addled, soon-to-be-insane Syd Barrett is on it. A novelty, if you will.

allmusic.com has 5 stars for Piper, Dark Side and Wish...

not sure how strong this argument is though

The Clowning is an excellent name for a song, I don't know what you guys are talking about.

I'd agree that Enslaved became wankers on Ruun. They tipped the proggy balance too far, that same balance which was perfected on Monumension through to BtL.

That said, I'm slowly coming round to Isa and Ruun. I'm interested to hear the material played live.

Anathema are write-offs.

Porcupine Tree...well, I'm dreading what Wilson will do to Orphaned Land. I'm failry certain that earthy, organic, dust ridden ambience will be replaced with synthy polished cleanliness.
