Agreed on both counts...but as far as the argument that Piper is revered only because of Barrett's descent into madness, I think Astronomy Domine by itself is enough to repute that

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is quite possibly the greatest album ever made. It took me several years to understand it. Now that I do, I feel less itchy on Saturdays.

Even so, Animals remains my favourite Floyd.
