I was flipping channels this afternoon, and as I passed VH1, I heard a familiar song - Opeth's "Windowpane" - so I stopped for a moment. To my surprise/chagrin/horror, they were using the song as the background music for the teary-eyed confession of one of the contestants on Flab to Fab: The J-Lo Workout.

Does this mean metal is going mainstream again? God, I hope not--at least not in this way!

...I feel sad...

lol yea the "background music" people prob research underground shit so that the poeple watching the show wont really know what band that is i guess, cuz using mainstream stuff would catch your attention right away and the point is to have you pay attention to the show not the music. a lot of shows use underground bands and window pain is a very radio friendly song its not metal at all. theres nothing wrong with that, i think tool is great and they are very radio friendly. if you are into music it shouldn't matter if its underground or not. if its good its good, if not than well....its not

thats disturbing. i dont have cable at home but i was on vacation all last week and where i stayed had cable. i think my IQ dropped from mildly retarded to profoundly retarded. i have thusly sworn off tv for the rest of my life save to watch movies and hockey games. i recommend you throw yours out the window and you wont be subjected to such shit as VH1 producers using Opeth as background music.
on a lighter note, i remember a news station in Dayton, OH using some Rush (early 90s stuff) as background music. i was flabbergasted. i thought that was cool though. It was like some prog fan worked at the station and put it on because they knew it was good stuff. VH1 hacks dont know anything about music. Flab to Fab? give me a fucking break.

dorian, why do you care so much? id think youd have a bigger problem with little goth girls and boys buying Opeth products at hot topic, more than having a piece of an opeth song as background on a music station...go figure. either way, maybe 1 out of every 20,000 people who watched that show, knew it was opeth when they heard it...i wouldnt worry.

In Flames not mainstream, uhh I beg to differ.
In what way is In Flames mainstream?? I dont see their videos being played on TRL. I dont see 14 year old teeny bopper girls with signs that say "Marry Me Anders" or running around screaming "Jesper is so hot!" So In Flames have made some videos and have had been played on headbangers ball. Many non mainstream bands are played on headbangers ball, thats the purpose of the show. So until I see preppy people wearing In Flames shirts and MTV Making the Video for The Quiet Place, In Flames are not mainstream
