Haha, now I know this is completely random 'cause it's no rule of thumb but it worked for me, I boosted/scooped whatever freq. I normally don't and vice versa.

I think it's the best tone I've got so far with a software sim, hehe

Oh and btw, listen till the end, don't judge it by the intro :goggly:
The whole clip is only like 40 sec long anyways...

And of course I'd like to know what you think of the guitar tone

That's really good! I'm not sure I understand exactly what you did with the EQ, though. Could you elaborate a little?

sounds quite ok for a software sim.

Too much air for my taste though.

Give details about the settings (especially the opposite EQ settings) please

Yupp, too much air on the drums, right?
I think I overdid it with the EQ on the mastering stage...

About the EQ:
I didn't rolloff at 60hz or 12khz. I cutted around 2k, 4k, 7k.
I raised 50hz-100hz, 1k-1,5k, 300hz-400hz and 8k-9k about 2-3db.
Blended the Kitty with the Wagner on Revalver.
Impulse is Mesa Edge (much less noisy for me).
No tubescreamer and no C4.

Except for the cutting at 2k, I normally did the absolute opposite EQ-wise.

hmm, I don't get it then...
like taking up too much space in the mix? meaning they sound big by themselves but the rest is sounding too small? or frequency-wise?
Like, could you explain a lil bit more, it's highly appreciated :goggly:

I mean frequency-wise.

I'm almost a noob so i could not explain you correctly what i mean by "air". I could try but i'm gonna sound like a dick so i'll let the "sound wizards" of this forum do it :)

Please someone correct me if i wrong but air has something to do with the high frenquencies, and air is a characteristic of the sound you get from a miked amplifier. The more distant your mic is from the cab, the more air you'll have (am i right ? ).
When you use a cab sim "air" is part of it.When you use a direct out from an amp there's no air.

So a good guitar sound has air, but it's like everything :if you have no air it sucks,if you have too much it sucks :)

Some people like a sound with a lot of air and like the way it sound in a mix, some other people like me don't like when there is a lot of air.
The noobiness here is that i tend to think too much presence and too much air sound the same :) I have a hard time to hear/understand/explain the difference actually even if i can hear one (a lot of presence is ok, whereas a lot of air is very ugly to me).

Anyway for me examples of guitars with too much air and/or presence are the guitar sound on those :

http://www.myspace.com/deathbeforedishonorbhc (clips from the "666 friends family forever united "ep (not sure about the exact name) and the "count me in" album) (i like this band but the guitars sound too much like the sound i get with my KORG AX1500G amp+cab sim with too much air (and presence) )

http://www.myspace.com/eyeless (i love this band but i'mnot a huge fan of the guitar sound on the last album)

So typically what i don't like is a 5150 sound with tons of air and/or presence which gives a yet modern but very "processed" sounding guitar sound. Same feeling when i hear most of the POD guitar sounds people get on this forum, which are ok for Meshuggah-ish stuff but would sound weird for hardcore for instance IMO.

I think my attempt of "air" explanation is full of false ideas so anyone...feel free to correct me. :)

p.s: sorry my English sucks a little bit

p.s 2: i think both posts i've just may make me the "noob of the day", uh?

well thank you my friend, I totally get your point.
But I think the main reason it sounds the way it sounds is because I used a different impulse file
(which was recorded with the mic more away from the cab) giving it a more "airish" feel to it I guess...
Where I agree is that the guitars sound way more present then they should but that's a matter of taste after all...
I just listened to the last Katatonia stuff and tried to emulate their sound... I know I've failed but I at least it's the right direction...
Thanks for your more in-depth post, it sure helps to get a more objective pov.
