it was AWFUL

six days in NYC, sleeping on the floor of a friend's apartment, continually making appointments to see apartments and tryign to sync up three different realtors and lots of independent owners and management companies, smiling when you see a shitty apartment, weighing the price versus the areas, hiding realtor appointments from each other, PRESSURE PRESSURE PRESSURE sign this lease NOW, they're all so fucking small, realtor's fees of around $2800, application fees of $150 per apartment and you don't even necessarily get the apartment, spending $16 or more per day on the metro and realising on day 5 i should've gotten an unlimited-week pass for $20something dollars, getting bottles thrown at me in harlem at 2am by a group of young african-american men who shouted "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HARLEM!", more apartments, more pressure, realising i have to throw away half my furniture, etc etc, finally settling on a place and at the lease signing being told i have to sign it for july15th instead of august 1st and so i owe an extra $800 in rent, and hey $150 key deposit, blah blah blah, ARGH!

but we got a place. 85th street between 2nd and 3rd (reallllly nice area), $1600/mo, one bedroom, very small, rather nice though. like 5 blocks from central park etc.

jeez.

That doesn't seem too bad for Manhattan. I mean it's a mortgage in even SoCal's ridiculous housing market, but still.

Did you not look across the bridge at the jersey side? We have some nice places to stay that are way less expensive but are slightly (ok, a lot) less cool.

nah, we wanted to live in NYC, and preferably manhattan. next year (once i know where i'm teaching! they haven't placed me yet!) maybe we can find a bigger/cheaper place in brooklyn or something.

that's not a bad price. i would never want to live in manhattan, but if that's your thing (and it is most new people's thing so it's all good) you lucked out. good for you!

Seriously, if I could pay 1600$ on rent I would have a fucking huge and classy downtown condo in Montreal.... Hell, I am planning to buy a place next year and the payments should not exceed 650$...

my apartment is $1,300 in brooklyn for a giant two bedroom (with parking, and with a back yard) it's brand new. so NYC isn't that expensive.

yeah, we might move somewhere cheaper/bigger next year. this is a foothold in the city. esp. after the bottle incident, it was really hard to convince aysha to live in a cheaper/shittier area, and we didn't want to look too much in brooklyn yet 'cause i might end up teaching in the bronx or manhattan (they haven't told me yet).

i have a huge house in boston for 2,500 (five bedrooms) in probably the safest possible area ever. but...new york new york!

hah well i'm like 99% sure everywhere in brooklyn is as safe as manhattan save for maybe east new york (where you'll probably end up teaching!)

we saw an awesome place at east 115th street which was probably as unsafe as we can get. almost signed for it, too.

sam, you living alone? we were hoping for a two-bedroom just for extra space but, uh, no dice.
