O/T: credit card debt, anyone suffer from the treacherous poison?

TD

HAS INTEGRITY
6 years of college and living the high life with my credit card! I've piled up over 6 g's (much to my shock and chagrin) of damage on 3 cards. Anyone else dumb like me. If so, did you just slowly pay them off, or did you get your bank to give you a consolidated loan. I'd rest easy with these things paid off.

Reservations require actually going anywhere, which we don't. Both times we went to Mexico and also in San Diego (4-5 years ago), we just found a hotel when we got there. Now that we've got the kid(s), we only go places where there's family, i.e. WONDERFUL Denver. We don't shop online, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except when we really really want something you can't get in a store, which I usually end up just going without. One of my best friends just went through an identity theft ordeal that I could definitely live without, so even if I had credit, I still wouldn't shop online. I'll probably get a card with a small limit a few months before we get ready to buy a house, but I still would only put shit like gas on it.

I've got a credit card, and I'm trying.....note trying, to get the use of it down to just petrol. But I'm failing, by using it on Meals with my girlfirend and stuff.

Its up to 1700 quid though. But I will sort it out asap :)

Petrol is expensive over here as it is! Its 75pence a litre. Dunno in Gallons, about 4 pounds or so. But I'm not sure.

Yes I fell into the trap. Not as bad as a lot of people I know, or from stories I have heard, but none the less got into trouble. The mother of my son, who has now left the state(which I am happy about) had alot of debt from collection agencies, and so being the nice guy I am I paid it all off for her. I figured we were gonna be together for a long time(doesn't everybody?) anyways I paid off as much as I could with cash, the other amount , I used the trusty old card. Well that, the amount I already had on, which was not a whole lot, all added up to a hefty sum. Me and her then split, and I went and bought a house, and there are always things you need right away for a house(remeber this Brat when you buy your house) and after putting the down payment down on the house I was left again to add to my debt on the cards. Well My son was born a month and a half later, and he had many complications that kept him in the hospital for 3 and a half months. You can imagine the things I went through with that. I ended up quitting my job so I could work closer to him,(he was in a hospital an hour away from me) and put some more debt on the card eating out all the time. Then came time for me to get custody, and the lawyers fee's, blood test's, back child support, which is bullshit because he never even lived with his mother. Well after all of this I had some hefty balances on a few cards. All had decent APR's , but I did not like having all the debt on card's and having to make all the payment's(which was always the minimum) I just got done getting a consolidation loan from the bank, so in 4 short? years I will be rid of all the debt. Now I only have 2 cards with extremly low credit lines, which are for extreme!! emergency's. And after all this hell, I can really say it is all worth it because I have custody of my son, and he is really come along way to being a normal healthy boy. Sorry this is so long, but it felt good putting out my story for all the world to see.

Shit, I know, man, there's a bunch of stupid crap you need to buy just renting an apartment. And this one's brand new, we're the first people to live here. WTF?? Anyway, it's cool that you got your son. How old is he now? My nephew was born right on time but spent 7 weeks in NICU, but aside from some extra vaccinations every winter, you'd never know he was sick a day in his life. It's amazing what they can do for newborns now. If I did have that much debt, I'd get a consolidation loan too, owe it all to one place rather than many.

He is Nine months. He is a little behind other kid's his age but so far no signs of anything to majorly?(sp) wrong. He has done as well as I have hoped so I think that as long as I keep a close eye on him these first couple years, he will do alright.

One man stands......you should change your name to "Two Men Stand". You impress me every time I hear you talk about your son. I have two very young boys and I can't imagine being able to raise them by myself. Your a good man.

Cut the credit cards in half and throw them in the trash!!! They are the stupidest things that you could possibly rack up debt on. 18-22% compounding interest....credit card companies should be thrown in jail....it is theft! After 4 grand in college debt, with a leather back pack and a pair of scratched up Oakley sunglasses to show for that 4 grand.....I cut the plastic and tossed it. Two years later I was completely debt free! I have a DEBIT card from my bank that can be used to shop on line and reserve hotels and all of the other bullshit that you need a credit card for....but its my money that is used. Not money borrowed at a ridiculously high interest rate.

CUT THE BITCHES IN HALF AND TOSS 'EM !!!

I never got a credit card because I couldn't trust myself with one. Though I have a rather large overdraft that the bank kindly keeps reminding me to pay off by the end of June.

Armored Thrax is right, Ty. First throw them away, then get a DEBIT card, then pay the credit cards off.

I paid off my 3rd credit card with my tax refund. Now the only debt I have is my car.

Now when I get junk mail from credit card companies, I put other junk mail in the "no postage nessasary" envelope they come with and send it back! I got this idea from an e-mail once, I don't know if you've heard about it:

Whenever you get junk mail that comes with an envelope that doesn't require postage, put other junk mail in the envelope, and drop it off in the out going mail.
For example, if you get a MasterCard application, send in them some pizza coupons, or forms for magazine subscriptions.
The postage is free! Just don't send anything that has your name on it (duh).

Transfer all your balances to 0% cards and pay them off. Then only use low interest ones for making reservations or just pay the shit off every month. Other than that get a debit card and your golden. Then put your money into a Roth IRA and put about 3 grand in every year. You'll retire at 58 a multi-millionaire.

Thanks guys! I use a debit card, I just haven't gotten around to paying off my debt yet. I always told myself in college "once I get a real job, I'll buy these off." I'm yet to do that. Brent's idea about the transfer is good, but thus far, no one will do it because they must see thru my scandal! I think next year I'll get the consolidated loan. I will have one last weekend romp before I go in for the loan - this has already been discussed w/ my best friend. LOL

I'll keep the one i have right now, but I refuse to get any more than the one i have. Because that's when it gets worse, when you have 2 or 3 cards to pay off instead of one.

I've got a debit card and i tend to use that more, well when i actually have money anyway.

Spears is dead on, It's fun to get on the phone & pit them against each other. I've tranfered it back & forth & not payed any intrest for 3 years. I got an offer from capitol one offering me a 0% visa. I've already got a MC though them, so I called them up & they said when the intrest finaly does kick in they'll cut % rate in half....

I'm a college student, so I have only one card, very, very low limit ($200), and ultr-high APR (around 20%). I've only had it for a few months now, and I've still to not pay my balance in full. No interest charges for me. A friend of mine once suggested a very cool idea to build up a good credit history. When you get one of those junk mail credit card applications, apply for the card, get approved, receive the card, and put one purchase on it. Like, go to the local record store and buy 5-10 CD's. Get back home, cut the card in half. Never, ever use it again. When the bill comes at the end of the month, just pay the minimum. Keep paying the minimum each month (or maybe a little more than that) and if you do this with, say, 5 cards, you should be set.

I have one that I use for car emergencies. I was up to 2000 but paid off in large clumps.

I use my debit card to buy things online as it is my real cash. I love buying metal online. www.theendrecords.com is the best along with liking www.metaldisc.com

You can find out if a site is secure and not have to be totally afraid.

I buy my hotel reservations online, plane tickets online, and amusement park tix online for vacations. I just pay it with my debit card or I pay it right back off like it was an american express card.
