So yesterday I went to see M.O.D. in Prague. They actually were here twenty years ago but I was not (saw S.O.D. in 1999 or 2000, can't remember exactly though). As I said before my good friends, Beast Within The Sound, were opening the show. I unfortunately didn't make it to see their set as they started quite early, which I regretted but on the other hand I'd seen them many times before and I hopefully will see them again. I found the guys in the venue and their guitarist told me that Billy himself had complimented him and the whole band after their set, so I guess that's a good thing.
I got into the venue when the third and last support act, Gride, was playing. I thought they rather sucked and couldn't wait till they got their asses offstage. But lots of people were into them and they also gave an encore song. The venue was packed but not sold out: can't tell the exact figures, maybe 500 people could have been there. I noticed lots of people from the Czech metal scene showed up. I met a few guys whom I hadn't seen, fuck, ten years or so.
I have to say I expected that M.O.D. would kick ass but even I was surprised how much they kicked ass! It was a total blast. The clean sound, the energy, the aggression, thrash, hardcore. They ONLY played the old songs from the old albums and few S.O.D. songs in the end (as far as I remember correctly, Kill Yourself, Milano Mosh, Pussy Whipped (dedicated to Charlie Benante, with the intro of "Milk"), Fuck The Middle East and United Forces. I later asked Scott Sargeant, who played bass, why they didn't play anything from RYLTH and RWS and he told me they only wanted to play the old songs.
The crowd was really insane, lots of stagediving and moshing. Billy encouraged the stagedivers but at the same time he stated that they should only get onstage and jump the fuck out of there. There was some jerk at the beginning who seemed stoned or high to me, he got onstage but didn't want to get out - and the bouncers didn't do anything with him so Billy had to kick him off himself.
Billy dedicated the Kill Yourself song to Barack Obama, of whom he said that he's a "piece of shit". There was first and a last moment of an awkward silence - most metal and HC fans in here are leftist liberals so they just love him
What surprised me the most that after they finished, Billy and the guys went STRAIGHT among the fans. No backstage, hell, no fucking shower! I came up to Billy and told him who I was and he was super cool. I had this Anthrax: I'm The Man T-shirt and asked him jokingly if I had to change this prior to the shooting and he was like "No, no, I like that". I made a few pictures with him and after that, had a short talk with the drummer (he and the guitarist were young dudes and especially the guitarist kicked ass: perfect guitar sound and tone), had few more beers and left.
What I have to say is that I got to the show fucking tired (I had wasted myself badly the night before), with the headache and all, and the show totally woke me up better than a fucking RedBull pack. I had a great time and I could tell it was a blast for everyone.
