Norwegians Confused By PRESIDENT BUSH's 'Devil's Horns' Salute - Jan. 21, 2005

The Associated Press is reporting that President George W. Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.

Residents of the Scandinavian country were taken aback when they saw the First Family appear to salute Satan during the inaugural parade.

"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.

For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.

Bush, a former Texas governor, and his family made the sign to greet the Longhorn marching band as it passed during the inaugural parade through Washington during Thursday's festivities, Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, explained to its readers.

"Please allow me to introduce myself - I'm a man of welth and taste..."

please don't post shit about this guy here. he actually LOST the popular vote in 2000 and only won this one by an extremely thin margin - and he's claiming "political capital" and a mandate from the people. give me a goddam break. i've already lived 8 years under bush fuck-ups and now i've got 4 more to look foward to.

oh, and 40 million for an inaugural party? hmmm.

agreed. "thin margin" is subjective but statistically, several million votes isn't considered significant. and definitely not significant enough to claim "political capital" and a mandate. do you even have any idea what these statements mean?
for presidents who have been elected for a second term, bush has the second lowest approval rating. ever. that doesn't give anyone "political capital".

That's awesome. And Bush didn't win by an "extremely thin margin." It was something like 52-48, which amounts to a few million votes more than Kerry.
Considering the size of the United States, it is quite small. Besides the only reason why Bush won were the damn bible thumpers.

haha! "bible thumpers". actually, research shows that it was more a matter of Kerry losing the election than Bush winning. I know that doesn't seem to make much sense, but what Bush's team did was reach out to the uneducated (and yes, generally conservative "bible thumpers") rural voters while Kerry's team ignored them.
Look at voting data and you will see that metro areas voted for Kerry while rural counties voted for Bush - almost across the board. Generally speaking, people who live in a metro area are more educated than those living in rural areas. In the end, Bush happened to sway more uneducated people than Kerry had educated people.

How similar to Argentina. 10 years of chaos and people kept voting the same bastard is insane. Hope this 'new' president help us to be a good, safe and educate country. We really need it.

Same thing happened here with the Independence refferendum. Alot of people from rural areas, or just those of the old generation voted for the queen to stay in power simply because they had no idea what change would mean, and the old fogey generation were too stuck in their ways. The important thing for anyone wanting change, or running for president to remember is that the dumb people in the world always outnumber the smart, so you need to make some compromises to get where you want.
