Defiance

I vårens ljusa kvällar
Hi all!

Since Mikael is a big Rush fan (mou aussi), I thought I might as well create a thread like this. If rahvin doesn't agree he can delete the thread. I'm planning on doing a Depeche Mode one too, seeing there're so many DM fans here too.

Cheers!

-D.

I'm ok with threads like this one, you guys can do it for whatever band you like. Just try to add meat to them in the form of comments/reviews/links, otherwise they're just "post your favorite", they get filled with one-liners, nobody reads anybody else's and it gets boring soon.

There's a topic over on the In Flames board for posting your top five songs by the band. It's got over 300 posts in four years, and I was really curious to know if anyone actually read it. As a test, I posted my top five. It's been over a month and no one has called me on it. Not even the guy who yells at everyone for mocking In Flames.

On the topic: I don't like Rush. Sorry.

I haven't even looked at that post in a long time, and got this life, haha.

As far as not liking Rush, YOU SUCK. Nothing personal, still like you.:p

Rush is a nerd band like Dream Theater (really, they're probably the most important progressive band ever). A lot of prog bands fail to grip me because, while technically interesting, they're not musically interesting. Watching a band like Dream Theater build a huge, glorious track and then break it by dropping into a harmonically-unrelated, goofy-but-ultimately-amazing solo section makes me angry. They tend to put the wankery ahead of music. That's one reason I love Dark Tranquillity: they're one of a small number of bands that are both technical and pretty, and about the only one that can be both at the same time (chorus to Out of Gravity, bridge of At Loss for Words, etc).

Rush was actually the first band I ever remember hearing, and it was on vinyl. That has really stuck with me throughout life. Not to mention, they have one of the best drummers and THE best bassist ever.

You know what I'm loving the fuck out of right now? Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell I and II. The two are great snapshots of hard rock (circa 1977) and heavy metal (circa 1993), wrapped up with a healthy dose of classic rock & roll and served in prog-rock sized packages. Also, building a ten minute song which is essentially a joke is epic.

That is all.

Oh man, I used to jam that album when I was in third grade...lol. I should listen to it again, and have flashbacks.
