Holy crap! I came here expecting just some minor difference. Thank you for this; very enlightening.

Not the biggest advocate of vintage gear generally speaking but older MD421's sound infinitely better than modern ones. I love old my grey 421N. It sounds definitely A LOT fuller, much like the U5 in this example.
Same thing with the MD409/407 vs the e609/606/906

Absolutely no contest between them. U5 kills the MK2.
