Olethrio Rigma O Tromos Tis Exousias
Black Lotus Records June 30th, 2004
By Jason Jordan
The cover image for O Tromos Tis Exousias is powerful. A dead child lying in a gutter is not only sickening, but perhaps captures the grimness of many metal themes. Interestingly enough, this underground band has myriad fine attributes, but one characteristic is flawed insomuch that its almost unbearable. Read on to find out what that said flaw is.
Into the Fucking Death is a highbrow introduction to Olethrio Rigmas latest. The song intertwines the sounds of war (machine guns, helicopters, shouts) with a simple-yet-engaging riff. Youd think that five minutes is too long for the intro motif, but I was actually left wanting more by the end. In other words, it works very well for the band. When the quartet does blast in, though, there are undeniable characteristics that present themselves: punk roots, chunky riffage, and horrible, wretched female vocals. Yes, her vox are awkward shouts that detract from the albums overall worth. Not only do they sound out of place, but also theyre funny at first and become overly grating with the passage of time. The music, on the other hand, is good death metal, which is the most simplistic way to describe it. And, Olethrio Rigma become more endearing as O Tromos Tis Exousias unfolds. Rhythmically speaking, the group is enchanting and theres really nothing left to desire in the extreme, vocal department. Compositions flow well, and present quality material.
If it werent for those damn female vox, I wouldve been able to rate this record higher. But, for those of you that arent easily irked, O Tromos Tis Exousias may surprise you yet.
