Ok, I've done my attempt at an Opeth cover ;)
If you're wondering what I'm on about, check this thread:
http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50935

This is basically a cover of Prologue (yes, off MAYH :p), with 2 riffs off 'Into the frost of winter' (yes, that bonus track off the reissue of Orchid :p) to give it a bit more depth (considering Prologue has about 10 notes to it and is only a few seconds long ;)). The lyrics are taken from 'Dirge for November' (BWP, but you knew that, didn't you), simply because it is short, and fitted better than anything else.

Anyway, the song: (which I call Prologue To Winter- it's my cover, I'll call it what I want :p)

My approach to doing covers is to always put my own spin on something, and to try and screw with the original as much as I can, without actually adding anything I wrote myself (other than harmony parts and stuff), so that it's 99% the original artists work, even though it may be unrecognisable. It's done with a rather strong Thergothon/Funeral Doom vibe in mind, so it's pretty slow (about 32 bpm), although it gets alot faster in the middle. I do think it needs to be a bit slower, but I didn't want to push my luck with everyones attention span ;) There are a few mistakes here and there (you try playing this slow), and the vocals suck (my mic is crappy, and my growls need some compression/reverb/eq/etc), but hey, it gets the point across well enough I think. And no, this wasn't 100% serious, so feel free to laugh at it, I do too :D

This is on Tripod, so it'll probably get deleted after about 4 people download it , if past experiance is anything to go by. I'll keep creating new accounts as that happens, so be patient (I'm too cheap to pay for hosting) ;)

Appologies also go out to Mikael, for ruining his riffs and lyrics :D

(ps. I have no idea if the tripod thing is gonna work, given the amount of traffic the board gets (I've done this before on the somewhat quieter Swano forum), but oh well....)

Very good work bro...

But goddamn, the vocals are TERRIBLE. WORST VOCALS EEEVVEERRR!!!! The vocals suck!!!!

Remember, this is constructive criticism...:p ;)

ok downloaded this earler, now where did i put it...

ah yes, here it is

hmm, certainly slow and doomy eh? A bit too slow and doomy for my liking :p

and I must admit i dont recognise any opeth in it at all. :p

Good effort however, mixing couldve been better. But all the notes do cut through so its good in that respect. Sounds good later in the song when you start doing some harmonies, just before it goes clean again, like i said its a bit too slow and doomy for me but youve done it pretty well. :)

I guess i should continue learning to play White Cluster some time.....

Actually, I disagre with Static. I know you intended the vocals to sound like growls, but I really like how it sounds like an extremely deep voice speaking, lyrics indistinguishable. I think that fits better than growls.

If you like vocals like that listen to Pan-Thy-Monium. Their growlers style is of the extremely low in the mix kind that sounds like squishy noises.

I like higher pitched growls.

Hey Groom, managed to get a hold of Khaoohs and KonFusIon, not bad, kinda hard to get used to though.

When are you planning the dropoff if ure still keen?

I'll send it on Tuesday, so it should reach you by Wednesday (NZpost claims that it's next-day-delivery within the Wellington area........ ;)).
You don't have Symbolic by Death, do you? That was the one I was gonna include......

I assume I don't have it cos I've never heard of it.

Need to send you something in return...hmmmm....some Mindless Self Indulgence....hmm....some DJ Static? :D

hmmmm....sounds like Thergothon to me (and that ain't a bad thing!) although I couldn't really distinguish any actual Opeth sounding anything....it was still cool....

VICTORY!!!! :D

Oh, don't get me started on the crapness of my 4-track recorder, the stories I could tell....
For some reason, the pan controls have decided to stop working, somewhere in the journey from being connected to my stereo to being connected to my pc, so I couldn't split the guitar tracks (and they needed it). I need new gear...... :D

Thanks man.
You get to go down in history as the first person to ever comment favourably on my vocals :D :p

Just make your growl higher pitched, do it a bit louder...hay presto! good vocals. Personally I cannot stand squishy frog growls, like Cannibal Corpse ones...yuck! *shudders*
