Two shows in the states (LA & NY). Who's going to be attending, other than me and shaq?

(This is the 20 year anniversary tour, where the band will be playing 2 sets. The first, Opeth will play Blackwater Park in its entirety and the second set will be comprised of songs that they rarely or never played before)

I wasn't even aware of this but since it's a Wednesday, it would have been impossible for me to go down for the NY show :-/

Well, it's good to remember that these shows have been sold out for a really long time now.

Yeah, I figured with it only being two stops. I really don't pay attention to these things unless its posted here and if there was a previous thread here, I managed to completely miss it. I would have been pretty annoyed with myself if it being a weekday hadn't made it impossible to get to.

Of course they're tight... they're statuesque. If you're going to make your bread and butter, as a live band who prides themselves on being tight, then you need to change things up from how they're played on the record. If you're just standing there, faithfully reproducing what's on the disc, why am I there?

There are few bands who make a live performance worth seeing. Few who are able to make the music sound refreshing and more meaningful. Most just look like a bunch of sheep--queue headbanging here, queue point and scan the stock of the guitar at audience, queue playing guitar vertically, queue begging the audience to be more excited, queue saying best audience ever, queue leading stupid chant instead of playing music. Personally, I'd rather have them stand around and play beautiful music which proves their capability to do so, especially in the modern day of bands being able to produce music on record that they could never play live.

I agree with your point, but at the same time, I feel like there are a certain number of bands that I don't want to see change from what's on CD to the live experience. I know for some people this may sound weird, but I want Opeth to sound EXACTLY like Opeth in their live concerts. To me at least, their songwriting a lot of times is borderline perfect and that's what I really like about Opeth, The flawlessness. I expect them to be just as perfect live, and in that respect, I think they deliver every single time.

In some cases, being like that may not be the worst thing in the world (imo).

On this we disagree.

Few who are able to make the music sound refreshing and more meaningful.
I don't go to concerts because I want refreshing and meaningful, I want energy and fun.

I've seen very few bands who weren't able to faithfully reproduce their music in a live setting, or at least reproduce a reasonable facsimile. But hey, that's what makes the world go 'round.

Understood. And don't get me wrong, I love Opeth. I've seen them 10 times. I just wish they'd perform with a bit of energy.

I hear you. It would be cool to see them play a more energetic show, but I wonder if that would take away from the quality of the music played. As it is, Opeth's music is very intricate and difficult to be played, let alone if they're headbanging, running around and doing backflips at the same time.

Because it's a concert performance, not a stageplay/musical with an overarching plot/characters.

Now if they were performing MYYH and/or Still Life and/or Ghost Reveries in full, you'd have a valid argument.

But since BWP is a collection of unrelated songs, deal with it.

If that second set is composed of songs from Orchid and Morningrise then I'll be interested.

And if someone doesn't enjoy a band live that you do, it's really no big deal.

Hmm, I thought Opeth had a LOT of energy when I saw them at the Starland, last May I think.

I plan on going to the NYC show. Hope to see a bunch of you there!
