I fucking love The Wiltern, its my favorite venue in Los Angeles for live gigs. Stoked.

Oh, and I had to say that I disagree 100% with this.

Don't tell me you like a bunch of bands, but they're not worthy of being seen live.

That's exactly the case. But I've talked about it before. It depends what you go in hoping to hear/see. I have different hopes than most. The bands worth seeing are the ones who elevate beyond what is available on the album. Improvisation isn't a requirement (though obviously it helps), and certainly stagenastics aren't either, but the band has to sell their performance, in some form or another. Many bands are just going through the motions in live performances, or for some reason their performance just doesn't work for me.

Tyr is a band that works for me live. Eluveite as well. Hell, Blind Guardian works great for me live. So does Kataklysm. But I'd say that if I enjoy a band live, there's about a 30% chance I'll enjoy their live show. Partly, its because I really do think about 'was this worth my time and money?'

Unfortunately, I haven't seen Opeth live.

I would personally hate it if the guys in Opeth played their live shows jumping around like monkeys in order to "entertain" the crowd. I love it cause they play exactly the way they did on record. They show they are more than capable of reproducing the same atmosphere in a live setting. They don't have to run around and yell we're the best audience ever. If they did that, they simply wouldn't be Opeth.

Because it's a concert performance, not a stageplay/musical with an overarching plot/characters.

I'm not talking about anything as crazy as jumping around like monkeys. However, there's no reason that they can't be as physically captivating as a band like Isis, whose music is filled with similar rising and falling passages.

As with all things, there's a happy medium, somewhere between monkeys on meth and pillars of salt.

Nobody has, so don't worry too much about it. I started to get concerned and contacted them last week just to make sure everything was ok (I bought the VIP tickets and haven't received the tickets or all the bonus stuff), and they said nothing had been sent out yet.

That's true!!! At the last NYC gig (with Enslaved), I recall him saying a really funny joke to the crowd...something about bringing your mother to say hello?

Shaq, do you remember that at all? I remember talking about it for days afterwards.

Yeah, Mike's hilarious. When I saw them in 2006, some drunk guy was chanting for Otep and saying how everyone there loves Otep, so after their second or third song, Mike introduced them as Otep and said something about how he makes a very pretty girl for being a guy.

Can't make it down for the NYC show, since it's in the middle of the week. Would have loved to be there otherwise.

Nope, it was the Ghost Reveries tour w/ Dark Tranquillity, in RI.

Agreed! Mike's deadpan delivery and always-humble tone can be pretty damned hilarious. I loved it when he started giving the audience "death-growl lessons" -- and then started critiquing some of the people closest to the front.

So, what does Isis do at live shows that isn't "standing around like pillars of salt," but is less energetic than, say, running all over the stage and bouncing on trampolines?

Its hard to describe. They really build and convey the contrast in their songs (which is a lot of fucking contrast), from being simple and dead on to all out headbanging and blasting away with the sound. I think Opeth does a weaker job at portraying the contrast within a song while on stage.

Here's the best example I could find. Especially once you hit the instrumental part a couple minutes into the song. You can just feel the energy building up (even more so if you were in the room).

I agree with you in part, but Isis music isn't as intricate to play as Opeth's, so that might have something to do with it?
