Opeth guitar tunings?

lol i'm sorry dude, but noone tunes lower than Meshuggah does. F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Meshuggah is the reason companies made 8-string guitars.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I have heard it from Fredrik, Mikael, and the Opeth site that it is Open D Minor (DADFAD)

No, you haven't. You've probably seen them say open D minor tuning, but not specify which string is which. The stereotypical open d minor IS dadfad, but this album doesn't use the stereotypical tuning. I can guarantee you the top one is an E. Mikael said so in an interview, not to mention the fact I was watching his fingers intently from the front row and saw that he was letting up on the top string for the open Es in the middle part of BOTH. And finally, the aforementioned part in Reverie/Harlequin forest would have had to have been played like

D-2(7)
A-[5]
D-[5]
F-[5]
A-[5]
D-[5]

with some kind of bizarre artificial harmonic rung off of the second fret with the other 5 strings allowed to ring out as the fifth harmonic.

I understand what you're saying, but i actually did hear them say which strings were which (talking metal podcast, episode 196) in an interview. But you say that you've seen them, so I'll take your word for it.

Direct quotes from that interview:

Fredrik: "In Opeth we use three different tunings basically."
Mikael: "Mostly standard tuning but the last time it was the open tuning, which was a drop D? DADFAE I think it was?"
Fredrik: "The G string goes to F and the B string goes to A and the low E goes to D"

AHA! I am vindicated. Not that I didn't know I was right

I don't recall hearing a low D in Black Rose Immortal...I'd like to know why you think it's in drop D (not saying you're wrong).

Wankerness has repeatedly stated (and I agree with him now) that BotH and GoP are in DADFAE (high E, not D) and Mike has stated this in an interview that I can't be bothered to look up. I believe Isolation Years is in that tuning (DADFAE) as well.

I've always assumed its a low D in BRI because of the bass, I could be wrong though. I don't see why they'd tune down for just one song on a whole album played in standard, but as you do. I guess Demon of the Fall wouldn't sound as evil if it wasn't downtuned.

THANK YOU!

hey man !!!

could you send me your verisons of Opeth tabs?? I'm pretty sure that they use DAFDAE instead of DADFAD, but can't download your powertabs.

so pls send it to me: fegyi001@gmail dot com thanks!!

This is right, besides not mentioning the capos used on some songs, up through damnation, with the probable exception of black rose immortal - where the heck did you get the idea that one's in drop d? I haven't tabbed it myself but there's a power tab that sounded right to me that's in standard, maybe you're confused cause the bassist had a six string and likes to hit the lower than e notes on that song, especially the intro where he hits a lot of low Ds? Your ghost reveries is an EPIC FAIL. NOTHING is in dadfad, this goddam topic happens like every 2 months and this misinformation persists, it's too bad i'm probably partly responsible since the first versions of tabs i made for GOP and TGC and BOTH were in DADFAD cause I (we in the case of BOTH, that one was cotabbed) didn't know any better and those are the ones still up on many sites cause most tab sites are terrible and most guitar pro copiers like to copy the first version of a tab and ignore updates a;rlkhas;dgkha;sdgkja;skdjg

Ghost of Perdition - DADFAE
Baying of the Hounds - DADFAE
Beneath the Mire - standard
Atonement - standard prolly no way to verify
Reverie/Harlequin Forest - DADFAE
Hours of Wealth - standard
The Grand Conjuration - DADFAE
Isolation Years - DADFAE

THIS IS RIGHT, IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE WRONG, I AM MORE THAN 100% SURE, I WAS IN THE FRONT ROW WHEN THEY PLAYED GOP/BOTH/TGC NOT TO MENTION HE SAID IT IN AN INTERVIEW NOT TO MENTION IN HARLEQUIN FOREST THEY PLAY THE 5TH HARMONIC ON ALL THE STRINGS AT ONCE AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO WAY TO PLAY THAT IN ANY OTHER TUNING AHHHHh

Mike is the master of E standard, seems most bands run dry of ideas in E and half to tune down. I respect metal bands that stay in E. I love the sound of E, and being creative in E can be hard sometimes.

this is what I think as well.

Seriously, master's apprentices is standard tuning.

Gojira is another band that truly shines with E tuning as well as dropped D, they have insanely heavy tracks but yet its same tuning as opeth
