early doom metal bands played at B, the sound gets thicker, i think some melody is lost in favor to heaviness. Opeth is meant to be melodic no?

we are talking about open tunings here. playing at B means tuning down 5 steps on all strings. tuning to an open tuning means tuning your guitar to a certain chord which changes the tonality, sound and possibilities to write music.

check out ian melrose - a scotish legacy if you think you can't get melodic with an non-standard tuning.

mh, i am not sure about nick drake's tunings. i will try to explain it:

(always from lowest to highest here)
standard tuning: EADGBE
downtunings: EbAbDbGbBbEb or DGCFAD and so on...all strings get downtuned the same number of steps

open tuning: you tune to a chord like DADFAD which would be a dmin chord or DADF#AD which would make a d-maj chord...

got it?

Fearless by Pink Floyd is tuned to an open G.

I think it could go either way. I'm afraid it will be the Devin Townsend complex where the open tuning results in there not being a single memorable riff through the whole damn album. He does do a good job at producing a huge wall of sound, but I'd definitely take Opeth's token riffing over some wall of sound with no memorable riffs.

As for other bands that use open tunings, the only two I can think of offhand that do it OFTEN are THIRD EYE BLIND and DAYS OF THE NEW. Days of the New's second album is just layers and layers of acoustics and really sounds awesome, if Opeth does what they did with open tunings it will be an incredible album indeed.

I guess alice in chains did it on a few songs too (over now, etc).

I commonly play in open G and open D, it is actually really fun- although this is on an acoustic guitar, I have never really tried it out on an electric...it should be interesting to see what they come up with
