Behind the mist.
Anyone else going to this by some chance? If so, I'll be the tall festive kid with the Woods of Ypres shirt and the long brown hair.

I will post thoughts and comments tonight. Hopefully this doesn't totally suck... we're driving like two hours to get to this fucking venue.

fireball ministry totally rules in concert, i'm sure you'll dig 'em. what's her nuts from hammers is in that band, or at least used to be. big heavy riffs, rock n' fuckin roll.

opeth of course fucking SMOKES in concert.

Their sound quality was ASS... Loomis just fucking rules, but I really genuinely don't like Nevermore no matter how I try. It's the weird balance of melodic emotional stuff with the bullshit CHUGGA CHUGGA.

When it comes to Nevermore, people tend to fall in to one of two groups:

Group 1: Nevermore is the greatest band ever.
Group 2: What are the folks in Group 1 smoking?

Of course, there are always people in the middle. However, this does seem to be the general reaction to Nevermore. As most of you know, I'm in the Group 1 camp. That said, I don't think their music is inherently accessible. For starters, I can see where Warrell's voice might put people off. It's very distinctive, and anything distinctive, tends to divide people. Also, their music is fairly brutal. If they're Power Metal, as some claim they are, than they are by far the most brutal Power Metal band I'm aware of. Throw in thought provoking lyrics and a very high level of musicanship, and they're not exactly listener-friendly. I think their lack of accessibility is further evidenced by the fact that they don't have a "single" on this CD. Even those of us who will put "This Godless Endeavor" in their #1 spot of 2005, would be hard pressed to point to a song that the band should release as a video/single. As I understand it, the band and the label had a heck of a time choosing "The Final Product" as the first video.

it took me a long time to get into Nevermore

Dreaming Neon Black came out, I listened to the album, thought "wow, this guy's vocals are really annoying, and the music isn't so hot either"

after about another handful of listens over the next 6 months after that I still didn't really like the cd, it was growing on me. Then one day I guess it all just lined up, and I thought "Wow! turns out this is really freakin' amazing"

then began the process of working my way through PoE, which took another dozen listens to absorb and consider of equal quality with DNB

Nevermore isn't exactly an acquired taste for me, I was blown away by my first exposure to them, This Sacrament, although it did take me awhile to fully appreciate DNB. As for Dane's voice being shot, that's totally understandable given his drunken exploits, less so considering that he sounds just fine on TGE, but of course onstage there's no tools to cover up the weaknesses.

Three more days...

There's a difference between bands that are hard to get into and those that just suck.

I think Nevermore was the nail in the coffin for one of my old friendships. :tickled:

Definitely group one. The first time I heard dead heart (about 4 years ago), I was pretty much floored. They've been one of my favorite bands since.
