you've got to love European crowds :p ... although, yeah here also not too much long haired metalheads at opeth-shows, but more then in NY at least ;)
and oh those moshpits and crowdsurfing ... news for you: metalbeats, and especially much variation like opeth, doesn't go well for moshing :s .. that is stupid hardcore stuff ...
oh well, I won't get exited over it anymore ... I wish I lived in the time when you could headbang withouth getting pushed over or a fist in your face ....

I love it how you people think moshpits are just a hardcore thing. Moshpits existed way before hardcore. crowds in the US are rather weak, and don't know what mosh pit is supposed to be about. In the real moshpit you have fun, and you don't get hurt. In the US most people are stiff as fuck, and the ones who mosh are doing this ninja dance shit that make me wanna come up and punch em in the face..

one more reason i love european metal

I think the same way. Well for the shows I go to, this means non-hardcore of course :D, the common expression for what the more "sporty" visitors do is the pogo. Until this hardcore-thing came up, there were not so many people who were talking about "moshing". Pogo means, you are more like jumping around to the music and push each other, which is not violent at all. - And I enjoy it time by time, depends on the situation. At Opeth concerts by the way, it works very well, but mostly there is excessive headbanging :D
So fortunately most of the "moshing" is really not this violent dancing, which is a completely different thing. There will be no "wall of death" at a death metal concert. (I hope)
