Bleak 1:41-1:51
The Drapery Falls 1:10-1:18
A Fair Judgment 5:46-5:54

I think these parts have in common, that there's one riff followed by another one that's somewhat "on top" of the first riff. Maybe a guitar player can give me(non-musician) a more intelligent explanation? do you know other songs where this technique is used?

You mean just the harmony they have over the top of one another? It's basically counterpoint in most cases... the two guitars do the one thing, then one trails off and does one thing, while the other guitar goes off and does another thing, and that just gives you that cool stereo, 'layered' sound.

I can dissect the Drapery Falls part for you though, because I know how to play both guitar parts for it. Basically Mike is doing octaves at first to lead into the riff, while Peter is playing some lower more disharmonic thing, then they both converge and 'break it down' if that makes any kinda sense.

If you want more examples of it, just listen to Orchid, shit the whole CD is harmony, dual melodies and counterpoint

Heavy use of counterpoint (in one form or another) is a major part of their sound. Deliverance is kind of lacking in it though.

Yeah, Deliverance is very straightforward as far as riffing goes. That's prolly why I never play it. *puts Orchid back in the stereo*

AHA! Why was it ever "Out" of you stereo??? Are you lacking faith, or lacking Cd-changer? :) I can have 3 cd's in, and Orchid is always in nr 2, just incase... :)
