Opeth's Grammy...

opeth definitely deserve that grammy but you need to remember that opeth's music has changed alot over the years and they have also gained more fans over the year as well.

ask yourself this: if opeth stuck to the same style of music of orchid and morningrise for the past 4 albums, would they still be as popular?

i'm not saying at all that opeth sold out or intentionally changed their music just to get a wider fanbase (which is what i think in flames did), but i am saying that opeth only got this grammy after their music progressed.

that said, congrats to opeth, they well and truly deserve this.

That's the way metal should be. Teaching mainstream how to play, not imitating it just to add some metal elements to it.

exactly how i feel...however, i don't feel that the music scene is there yet, nor do i think it will get there very soon.

The CoB board is full of people doing hundreds of posts with just something like ' ' and posting idiotic threads like 'My CoB breakfast' or something stupid like that. You get flamed into oblivion if you dare to criticise any aspect of CoB, those people are the definition of fanboys. Seriously, sometimes people come on here and complain about us Opeth fanboys, but they obviously havent been to the CoB forum.

Obviously everyone there isnt like that, and CoB are a fucking killer band too.

the COB breakfast, COB custom bowling balls, COB chili dogs, are all threads done by one person, Overlord Purple Rainbow, and theyre rather rare. as for the hundreds of posts with just , the members just use the board like a chat, basically. the thing about flaming criticism is that the people who are criticizing usually go about it the wrong way an do it in a completely immature manner, and they respond likewise. do it in a fashion that is objective and mature, and theyll be civil about it. dont just go in and talk about how much you think they suck because they stole such and suchs riffs or whatever the case may be. then youll get the typical fanboy flames that slipknot fans are most noted for and including pointless namecalling.

But you see thats the thing. When the new album came out I remarked 'the songtitles are a bit ridiculous' and I was flamed like never before. Everyone kept going on about how cool they are and how great they are, they simply refused to take on board anything I said. Lol, it was kinda funny actually.

believe me, i think the titles are pretty stupid too. the stupidity of the board s what makes it great in my opinion. but that may just be my sense of humor.

they made fun of it enough when the first read about all the titles. they even made a cd cover flaming the new album, ill see if i can find it and post it here.

Yah I guess you're right. There are pretty cool people there of course, I just got a strange vibe from that board, and I quickly returned here :p
CoB kick ass though, as does the *music* on the new album :headbang:

you are right about the COB forum, guys! It was so damn difficult to admit for them (btw, also for Alexi Laiho in an interview), that the intro of Bodom Beach Terror was ripped off from Carcass. In the meanwhile I find it very interesting and admirable, that Mikael Akerfeldt honestly says things like 'This one is a Morbid Angle rip-off.', 'Actually, this is a typical Camel riff' or 'The idea behind the album cover is the same with the debut album of Black Sabbath'. I think this is again one of the things which is reflected in their music. The guys in the band are not pretentious, they are not posers and they are not trying to behave like someone who infact they aren't, they are not afraid to admit their influences, so IMHO this is why their music is so natural and so GREAT!

No... they´d be boring :) And which song would you use to introduce opeth to someone to opeth who hadn´t heard them before(someone not into metal )... Wreath or The Night and the silent water...? I bet TNATSW would be easier to get into.

Nice thread, intelligent comments. I do prefer older Opeth, but I love their new albums as well, so it's fine with me if they continue to redefine their sound. Whatever they play turns to gold....or the sound-wave equivalent. They certainly deserved the award.

Here it is, a band constantly increasing its musical quality with every release and attracting ever-increasing interest from mainstream.

I totally disagree. Opeth have dumbed down their music in Deliverance too. I think Deliverance's content is like two Still Life songs overused and repeated. The harmonies, obscure chords (Death and Mellow) and Progressive song structures have really diminished. The lyrics are amateur crap compared to My Arms Your Hearse and Still Life. Repetitive same-riff playing has been increased from four times to eight.

In other words Opeth stopped constantly increasing their musical quality after Blackwater parks release and all the mainstream success their getting now sucks coz it looks like their gonna release a lot of albums in the future in the Deliverance vein.

commandante, this is quite possibly the most intelligent board on UM. no teenagers starting huge flame wars every other thread because somebody doesnt agree. no immature name calling. its great. i dont post on here a lot, just usually lurk, but this is probably my favorite board. the testament board is very good about that stuff too. lots of intelligent posts even in some of the more assenine arguments.

edit: im gonna go into convultions if i dont get damnations soon!!

Hey! Don't hold a bias against teenagers! I'm 17 and my major interests in life are philosophy, progressive metal and politics... just because I'm a teen doesn't mean I'm going to start any flames wars or run around yelling about how much Dimmu Borgir's last album "0wn3d"... haha... or about how Cradle of Filth's next album's song names are "sooo kewl" (check CoF's website; they're terrible!)... anyway, I'm not angry or anything, just be careful... we're not all idiots!

I would also have to agree with Golgotha, in saying that all teenagers aren't like you have described them to be. I myself am a teenager like Gol, but you won't see me starting flame wars anytime soon.

@ Prophetix: Honestly, I don't think that Opeth have dumbed down their music at all. I personally enjoy all of the albums, and it's not too easy to complain about any one of them. I don't think Deliverance is repetitive at all, and I think many people would agree with me. I also happen to like the lyrics too. Opeth has definitely taken a step in the right direction.

the sad thing is, im not referring to just teenagers, even adults are like that on UltimateMetal. I understand that not everyone in a certain group is the same. i apologize for stereotyping the entire teenage group. I should have said 15 and below, because thats how way too many act. besides, im only referring to the people that act that way.
