It amazes me that Opeth has been around for 15 years. Most bands start falling apart at this point of their progression. Alot of them never make it to that point. Some of the more successful bands put together a "Greatest Hits" record.

Of all the bands I listen to & follow, I can't think of a band with such an amzing collection of songs. All of their albums are stockpiled with great songs & even greater moments of music intertwined within the song. Out of their 60+ songs, each one has a moment of bliss that lingers within us long after listening to it.

It's an impossible task to pick just a select group of songs that highlight Opeth. A collection of 8,9, or 10 tracks would be more of an introduction to Opeth & their music, but for the sake of discussion, I'll give it a try. I'm looking for 10 of Opeth's greatest hits. I also feel that each album needs to be represented with atleast one song. That would leave 2 open spots for additional tracks. This would be my 10 greatest hits that best represent the band & their music, in order of release.

The Apostle in Triumph
To Bid You Farewell
Demon of the Fall
Face of Melinda
Serenity Painted Death
The Drapery Falls
Blackwater Park
Deliverance
Windowpane
Ghost of Perdition

Certainly not an easy task. So many others I'd like to add, but I think this is a very diverse list. A sure best seller anywhere !

What about "When", "Godhead's Lament", and "Advent'? :ill:

This is mine... not in order:

When
Advent
Blackwater Park
A Fair Judgement
The Drapery Falls
Windowpane
Godhead's Lament
Deliverance
Demon Of The Fall
Ghost Of Perdition
Face Of Melinda
The Apostle In Triumph
Forest Of October

Advent is the missing one that I most wanted to include. I debated between Advent & BWP. I chose BWP because that would give me 5 songs from the 1st four albums & 5 from the most recent four albums. BWP is also a better song than Advent, I think...???...

This is probably how my "greatest hits" Opeth album would look like:

1. The Twilight is My Robe
2. Advent (or The Night And The Silent Water - I love that song...)
3. April Ethereal
4. Demon of The Fall
5. Serenity Painted Death
6. Face of Melinda
7. The Leper Affinity
8. A Fair Judgement
9. To Rid The Disease
10. Ghost of Perdition
11. Isolation Years

I've a feeling an Opeth greatest hits would be similar in scope to Emperor's "Scattered Ashes". For example the first two discs discs featuring the likes of

When

To Rid the Disease

To Bid You Farewell

The Twilight is My Robe

The Moor

The Funeral Portrait

The Baying of the Hounds

Serenity Painted Death

Masters Apprentices

In My Time of Need

I Mist She Was Standing

Harvest

Harlequin Forest

Demon of the Fall

By the Pain I See in Others

Black Rose Immortal

(I just alphabetised those so it looked like a CD track listing rather that I've just gone through the Opeth discography in my head)

Then disc 3 would be a bunch of previously unrecorded covers, live recordings and daft stuff the band's done together

When - (live)

Zwiesparche Der - Popol Vuh Cover

Heavy Metal Machine - Steel

Soldier of Fortune - Deep Purple Cover (live)

Nimrodel - Camel Cover

December Flower - In Flames Cover

Time Has Told Me - Nick Drake Cover

Moredt I Grottan - Sorsokgen

Demon of the Fall - (live)

Chapel of Ghouls - Morbid Angel Cover

Everopening Flower - At the Gates Cover

I am the Black Wizards - Emperor Cover (feat Ihsahn)

Something like that would probably be the best CD ever made.

What would it be called?

Mine would look like this :
1. Master's Apprentices
2. Advent
3. Under a weeping moon
4. Blackwater Park
5. By pain i see in others
6. The baying of the hounds
7. Death wispered a lullaby
8. April Ethereal
9. Bleak
10. Godhead's Lament

I would put many more songs in there...Actually, I have an mp3 cd of all Opeth albums in my car that i play once in a while :))))) Too many songs to put them onto 80 minute CD!! They are all great in their own way!!It really hard to select THE BEST since they all kick ass!!!

No, but nor have they done an Emperor cover. It would just be cool if they were going to make a greatest hits if they did stuff like that.

Besides December Flower is pre 'Reroute' In Flames, before they started to suck, and were fucking awesome.

My top 10 are:
1. Closure
2. The Drapery Falls
3. The Apostle in Triumph
4. White Cluster
5. Ghost of Perdition
6. Demon of the Fall
7. Face of Melinda
8. The Grand Conjuration
9. Under the Weeping Moon
10. Blackwater Park

these are in order of what sounds good on a cd to me, not what my favorite. there are many I wish could be on my top 10, like deliverance and the moor, and tons more but this is my top 10 list.

my 'Opeth - Greatest Hits' would look this way (in no particular order):

The Twilight Is My Robe
Advent
April Ethereal
When
Karma
Godhead's Lament
Dirge For November
A Fair Judgment
Ending Credits
The Baying Of The Hounds

Greatest hits albums are a terrible concept in general. I hate them. It may work for pop artists who release albums with 4 good songs and 8 filler songs so over the course of their carreer they might have produced one album of songs worth buying. But for artists who actually don't suck I think songs should generally be experienced in the context of the album they were on. Especially when the album is a concept album like MAYH or Still Life.

These aren't necessarily just my favorite Opeth songs, but solid songs that respresent the band very well.

In Mist She Was Standing
Black Rose Immortal
When
Demon of the Fall
The Moor
Face of Melinda
The Drapery Falls
Deliverance
Windowpane
Ghost of Perdition

Opeth hasn't really had any "hits" but then neither did a lot of bands who released such albums. Usually they're done just to make some more cash or keep the artist on the scope when they are either slow or out. Opeth is band that I think could go a few more albums before releasing a hits disc. that said, i'd probably pick:

1. To Bid You Farewell
2. Advent
3. Under a Weeping Moon
4. Bleak
5. Deliverance
6. Ghost of Perdition
7. Hope Leaves
8. April Ethereal
9. Harvest
10. White Cluster

How about an Opeth BOXED set...

CD 1: A live CD featuring an absurdly kick ass setlist.
CD 2: Still Life played live in it's entirety.
DVD: A live set (like Lamentations, but with songs from ALL the albums).
etc....

And as an extra bonus, maybe a lock of Mikael's hair in each box... lol

kidding about the lock of hair... but a box set would fucking rule
