Opeth's Orchid is 12 years old

I listened to orchid for the first time in years yesterday. Utterly timeless still. Only essential opeth release

I need to revisit. It's been years and years since I listened to it. And even when I picked it up, I don't think I spent much time with it. I picked up on the same day as Morningrise, so Orchid mostly sat there collecting dust.

I never gave this one much of a chance.

Still think Morningrise is Morningsnooze.

I heard Ghost Reveries and then LOL'd.

I love Still Life and Deliverance as well!

Damnation is adult contemporary music.

My Arms, Your Hearse sounds like tapes.

EDIT: Blackwater Park is perfect or dull.

Damnation just isn't very good. I've learned to appreciate deliverance a lot. I still don't understand the overwhelming praise for still life. To me, its the weakest of the first five, and id take deliverance over it.

To me, orchid just hits the right chords. The clean vocals are sparse, and the growls are more black than death. The production from swano isn't overproduced. The songs are some of their best: apostle, forest of october, in mist...., eveb the two interludes are great.

Orchid was my first Opeth. And it a tie for me between it and My Arms, Your Hearse for favorite Opeth. Brilliant album

I like it a lot. That said, I totally see why many wouldn't care for it.

That's madness. Still Life is my favorite Opeth album, followed closely MAYH, MR and BWP. Deliverance has some nice moments, but is too one dimensional to sit through in a single listening.

sensible judgment. It has some undisputable carefree songwriting magic, like Morningrise, which I prefer.

My Arms remains on top for me, also as pretty much the only Opeth album I still spin from tim to time. Though I should undust Still Life also.

still life and morningrise are the only opeths i ever listen to

good stuff

blackwater park is a really bad disc

so bad i'm pretty sure i sold it

and i don't sell a lot of discs

Though I don't listen to it much anymore, buying Morningrise in 1999 was a big step in my musical evolution. The only "extreme" metal I'd heard up to that point were Sepultura and Cannibal Corpse. So it'll always hold a soft spot for me.

But yeah, Orchid is the best. It just seems to contain more memorable moments than all the rest.

mayh is much better than i remember. i really enjoyed it. still no go on still life. i dont like it. face of melinda gets on my nerves. other than white cluster and the moor, forget it. im not a big concept album fan either. bwp sucks other than the title track, and i cant tolerate bleak as well.
