And that’s the beauty of a band like Orthodox. They exist comfortably within the confines of doom, but that doesn’t stop them from turning the genre on its ear. They play with the ambience of slower-than-fuck music and twist it around until it conforms to their desires. There’s no orthodoxy here – it’s just innovative music that’s worth checking out.

These muthasludgers have returned with yet another monolithic slab of doom-metal, yet this time around incorporating new sounds styled from the likes of vintage King Crimson and avant-garde Coltrane. While the album may contain gentler prog-rock inspired instrumentation featuring clarinets and trumpets, they manage to keep one ostensibly heavy boot still rooted in doom.

A+++++ would listen again.
