Passion The Fierce Urgency of Now
Goodfellow Records GFR043 October 10th, 2006
By Jason Jordan
So far, Goodfellows year has been filled with either ups or downs and nothing in between. Debatably, the downs are efforts by Spitfire and The Smackdown while the ups are the releases of Intronaut and The Abominable Iron Sloth. Somewhere in the middle, however, is Passions average take on hardcore/punk blended with metalcore The Fierce Urgency of Now.
One Way Ticket opens in the vein of Stretch Arm Strong, or any of several groups that used to call Victory Records their label back when it was, you know, legit. Anyhow, when Passion slack in tempo and elongate certain passages, thats when they sound most like a metalcore unit, which is also partially solidified because one of the four contributing vocalists parallels Putman from Norma Jean. See Get in the Van for details. Perhaps the most troubling drawback of The Fierce Urgency of Now is that it fails to excite, but is not disagreeable enough to warrant anything except ambivalence, or worse, apathy. Still, the record is a slick one as far as production is concerned, and at 45 minutes total, delivers on the $10-$15 youll most likely pay for it providing you want your moneys worth in time only.
After listening to The Fierce Urgency of Now many times over, I think Passion shouldve just chosen one direction rather than incorporating both hardcore/punk and metalcore. Their debut isnt bad, much less nauseating, though its the kind of album that will be relegated to the middle of the quality scale.
5/10
