where in the chain are you cutting off the transients?

i've been putting the clipper 1st in order to whack off some of those extreme peaks, then hitting a compressor for a few db's of gluing and rounding off

then the limiter's been coming after that to squeeze a couple more db's out of the whole deal...i guess logic has dictated to me to put the clipper first so that everything coming afterwards doesn't have to work as hard, but i just thought i'd seek some other opinions on the matter

also, i'm sure this has been covered before, but i just flat-out didn't feel like digging through a bunch of threads for it...besides, marcus needs some fodder for jacking his post count back up

no clipper during mixdown definitely.
during mixdown I have AC1 and Smart C2 on there...when I'm mastering (and only then) I'll SOMETIMES clip a tiny tiny amount (hardclip) on the way back into the apogee..but really just so little that the light lights only like every 10th snare hit or so.

then during mastering: EQ, softclip, MB comp, hard clip, MB limiter (only sometimes), another tiny bit of Apogee Hard Clip (only sometimes), limiter.

i do clip snare 2 times, kick once,

for rock : i mix into 4k bus comp ->> into a clipper to see how well it accepts the transients >> into precision limiter for final brickwall limiting.
for metal : mix directly into the clipper >> limiter.

the clipper prevents the limiter from unnecessary pumping // tames the snare/kick transients a little //

but be careful. your mixes tend to sound ear fatiguing if you overdo the clipping thing. its easy to go - 5 db rms with that,
but it will sound like ass and you basically cant put your finger on what exactly sounds ass... its actually destroyed transients.
for - 7 / - 8 masters its a great way (for me at least) ;-)

I kinda like gclip but Im gonna try clipping the convertors of my 003 with the drum bus and compare that to gclip, might be interesting!

Hey Lasse how much gain reduction do u have on the c2, and whats your general settings? Are you using the sidechain also? Im still experimenting with it it and have recently found 4.1 to be kinda cool to mix through. Im still undecided about attack and release settings though..

Well... why?

The purpose of a clipper is to eat up the peaks right? It just clips everything at a certain point.

If you're doing that after compression, maybe you're not compressing enough, or fast enough... ??

That might not be what you're after with the compressor. A compressor can be used to achieve lots of different results, I like to just add a tiny bit of flavour and glue the mix a bit together in the mastering stage.

I had good luck with this chain:
AC1
SSL 4K Buss Comp (or UAD PBC) going for a max of 4 dB reduction

- my mixing chain stops here -

T-Racks Soft Clipper (max 2 dB reduction)
T-Racks Brickwall Limiter (max 4 dB reduction)

Exact settings depend on the mix.
