You know I completely forgot there were rules involved in this and just made a list of tracks I like from my favourite Opeth albums. Not sure I could manage 24.
Oof, 12 Opeth albums = 24 tracks. Let me have a pop at this.
Disc 1
The Night & the Silent Water
Nectar
To Bid You Farewell
Disc 2
The Moor
Serenity Painted Death
Disc 3
White Cluster
Deliverance
Disc 4
Ghost of Perdition
Beneath the Mire
Hessian Peel
Holy freaking shit...
None of these songs I’ve left would make the cut for me, save perhaps The Moor and To Bid You Farewell. I’d even describe some of them as terrible (Nectar, Serenity Painted Death, Beneath the Mire, half of Ghost of Perdition, White Cluster).
I have a lot of love for my favourite Opeth tracks, but they’ve never been the most consistent band even within albums. Always a lot of dross included, save for perhaps MAYH, which is pretty consistently good. I find most of their non-metal tracks to be pretty uninspiring and dull. Take “Harvest” off BWP for example. And “Atonementl is just fucking horrible.
Glad to see you include “Dirge for November”, though. Which is really underrated I find and is easily one of their most genuinely moving tracks imo. But then you didn’t include “The Amen Corner” from MAYH, which is also huglely underrated in my experience. Some for the riffs in that one are massive.
The first two albums have my favourite general sound from the band and the best individual moments before they became more formulaic. And I honestly wish they’d kept the more folky accoustic sections instead of what they’d go on to do later. They appeal to me so much more.
