Philly Rollcall

I have to work. Olny way to get off is to have someone cover my shift, I'd be fired if I did not show up.

I hate you guys. I live in Philly but I'm 5 hours away at college right now and have no way to get there tonight.

yep. i will be there. my first opeth show.

any truth to the rumor that they're saving "ghost of perdition" for tonight's performance??

I'll be there, too! *squeals like a little girl* Eeeeeeeeee! I'm so excited! Opeth and Nevermore all in the same night! I'm so going to orgasm when Opeth walks out.

It's gonna be my first Opeth show also. I really hope they play Ghost of Perdition. That would be fucking sweet, definitely my favorite track off of Ghost Reveries.

I will be there as well...third time(second time if you donot include -sounds of the underground)seeing Opeth..first time for into eternity and nevermore....it should be an awesome evening...cannot wait!!!!!!!...ghost of perdition would be a very welcome addition.
sean-see all at the show!!!!!!!!,,,happy halloween!!!!!!!

That concert was fucking awesome  . Would have been nice if they had played Ghost of Perdition rather than The Grand Conjuration. Anyway, Mikael was hilarious and they played my favorite song, Face of Melinda . On a side note I was pleasantly surprised by both Nevermore and Into Eternity...although, obviously, neither were even near as good as Opeth.

ditto  the lead singer from into eternity was a douche tho. but an entertaining one.

"we call it the "no-no" bang."

well, i agree with you on certain points.

first and foremost, it WAS a great OPETH show. Mikael was hilarious with his ad libbing. FOM was probably the best song performed of the night (BWP was equally amazing tho).

on the flip-side, the sound was terrible. which made both opening bands even worse than they already are. ok, so NEVERMORE is an interesting band and their lead guitar player SMOKES, but they eventually got boring. as far as INTO ETERNITY is concerned...nah, their 5 songs were 5 too many. crowd seemed to be into it tho.

continuing with the sound critique, even OPETH was plagued with equipment malfunctions. i don't think they had their own sound engineer with them since it was clear that whoever was mixing wasn't familiar with the songs. no matter what, you needed wait 2 measures in to a particular solo for it to be audible (regardless of whether it was Peter, Mikael, or Per).

lastly, i need to make mention of Opeth's fill-in drummer (forgetting his name at the moment). i don't think people realize just how tough it is to play TIGHT death metal on the drums. Martin Lopez could very well be one of the world's best drummers (he mentions Horatio Hernandez as an influence on the Lamentations DVD. pick up the "Triangulo" album by Michele Camillo if you want to check out where Lopez gets his inspiration from).

that being said, i have to compliment Opeth's fill in drummer for making it through the set and recreating much of Lopez's unique fills and time changes. but at the same time it's obvious that there is a KEY element missing from the band's live show these days.

This is a great summation of last night's show. I've heard Into Eternity on Sirius several times and have been impressed. However, at last night's show I was disappointed. The guitars sounded extremely nasally and sterile and the mix was just nasty. I'm not a Nevermore fan so I'll leave them to someone else to comment on.

I thought "America, fuck yeah!" was a hilarious filler in b/w Nevermore and Opeth's set.

As far as Opeth is concerned. No matter what they play, I'm always impressed. This was my sixth time having seen them and the infatuation I have with them has not worn off one bit. Mikael's banter with the crowd was priceless! Axenrot overall did a very good job at filling in for Lopez, but you could tell some "vibe" was missing. When he demonstrated to the audience what a blast beat, or grind was, he sounded absolutely wicked. I could have listened to him do that for hours. I was actually impressed with the sound quality of Mikael's solo's this time - they cut through the mix much better (even though mr. sound guy was sleeping at the wheel.) I think the TLA is the perfect venue for Opeth - the crowd was really engaging and the bouncers were definitely not pricks like at the Troc.

Note to self: Buy a replica of Peter's PRS CE 24 10 top with birdies!

You kept it clean, I hope ;) .

How was the rest of the set? I left with about 3-4 minutes left in Deliverance, because I was with my dad and neither of us could stand any longer, not to mention we had to make the drive back to AC, NJ. I was about 6ft tall with glasses in a greyish hoodie, my dad about 6ft 2 in a blue "work shirt" near the mixing board (probably 5ft or so in front of it).

There was a guy next to us who I thought looked kinda like Peter...he was wearing a black Burzum shirt, maybe 6ft 4 and his girlfriend was wearing a white "I (heart) Lesbians" shit.

now you're talking!

Opeth has the BEST collection of PRS guitars i've ever seen. their tone is amazing. is it me or did i see Peter with one of those discontinued EG models?

btw, i think Mendez's bass is taller than he is
