As a few of you may know, I was at the Amon Amarth gig in Glasgow at The Cathouse on Tuesday night. The Cathouse is a really small venue so I was expecting a really good atmosphere. I was quite near the front of the queue and got chatting to a couple of other guys, this was one of the guys first gigs, to which he was advised to stay away from the pit.
Anyway doors opened at 7.00pm and I was inside by 7.10pm.
Support bands were Octavia and Finntroll.
Octavia weren't bad, as good as an all female Norweigan metal band could be.
They had already started by the time I got in and the crowd really wasnt into it at all , even when they were asked who they were here to see, to which more people replied Finntroll.
I managed to speak to them when they came off stage, due to where I was standing (you'll see why a bit later on). The lead singer was looking fine saying the bands new album is out over here in May. I asked her for a band photo and she said they'd come back in a few minutes to do it...by the time they came back I was already into Finntroll tho, so I missed out.
The sound guy was really enjoying himself and played with the crowd a little before the next band out.
Finntroll were out pretty soon after Octavia came off and due to where I was standing I managed to catch a pic of the band before they went on (see below). Im not really a fan of Finntroll, so I wasnt expecting to get into it as much as I did but they really got everyone going and most of the pics I took of them on stage were blurred but I managed to get a few. They played an hour long set which everyone was really please about, although I wished they did a 45min set and gave Amon Amarth the extra 15mins.
I got a few sweaty handshakes from the singer and the guitarist closest to me in the pictures.
Finntroll waiting to go on, with a member of Octavia chatting to them
Finntroll finished their hour set at 8.05pm but there was no sign of Amon Amarth until 8.30pm, which surprised a few of us, considering how soon Finntroll were out after Octavia, but I wasnt complaining, I was about to see the Viking metal Gods, a band I've worshipped for the last 2 years less than 10 feet away from me!
They kicked off with the instrumental that is at the start of one of the Wrath Of The Horseman sets and then drove straight into the new album with Valhall Awaits Me followed by one of my favourite tracks from the new album: Runes To My Memory, next was onto one of their best live tracks Death In Fire, the crowd got really into this one and we ended up screaming alone to the chorus DEATH IN FIRE!!!! Then it was back to the new album and the only track I dont like on it: Asator but I was still jumping and headbanging along anyway, i mean its f*cking AMON AMARTH! I've forgotten the exact order of it now but other tracks they played included Bleed For Ancient Gods, Releasing Surturs Fire and Cry Of The Black Birds (which was fecking awesome). Then it was time for the encore, which consisted of a storming version of Pursuit Of Vikings with us all screaming the chorus again, which I didnt want to end, along with Cry Of The Black Birds this was the best sounding track of the night and its a shame they left it until last.
Again I got sweaty handshakes, from everyone in the band this time. and thats it I guess. Overall it was a cracking gig, just for POV and Death In Fire, the sound quality wasnt great, but that was more down to the equipment I think, so hopefully when they come back again, they'll be at The Barrowlands or Carling Academy.
A few times during the gig the band stopped to drink out of the Viking horns they had around their waists which was pretty funny to see and a really good image I couldnt a pic of due to my battery dying in my camera. I did manage to get a pic of him pointing straight at me during Pursuit Of Vikings which was by far the best pic of night.
If any of you get the chance to see them live, take it because it was f*cking AWESOME!! enjoy these last few photo's:
