Raymond Watts, the man behind PIG has been known as one of the creative forces behind esteemed artists such as Foetus, Psychic TV, Einsturzende Neubauten and KMFDM. On the basis of the lyrics for Pigmata he also wants it to be known as a junkie; rarely do they stray from the topics of either sex or drugs. This is, in fact, pretty much par for the course for the style - straight-up industrial metal. Rasped/sung lead vocals with KMFDM style female backing singers, melodic – sometimes even bluesy guitars – and programmed drums are all present in abundance. The bass is fitting with this sound, and the electronics give this all a contemporary edge. Nu-metal leanings are strong, for those averse to the genre, but the music is far from unadulterated Korn worship.

While the tracks can tend to merge into one due to a slightly formulaic approach, this formula is undeniably effective. Controlled aggression, catchy, well written yet simple songs, and totally accessible music all make for a great fun CD. Tongue-in-cheek nods to 80’s electronics, rock and EBM help cement this good-humored approach, if in complete juxtaposition to the lyrics. If you like the more commercial side of ‘metal’ or industrial then Pigmata may well be right up your seedy, dimly lit back alley... as it were.
