I have been struggling to get a guitar tone that I am satisfied with. I have been trying to get a nice defined/tight sound like others here have achieved. I have always seemed to get wishy-washy tone with cardboardy low-end. I think I have achieved something nicer tonight, maybe :loco: . It isn't my playing, it's the familiar Septic Ashes track. I reamped the 2 dry guitar tracks and put them in a mix (a term I am still not comfortable referring my work as :heh: ).

Anyway, here it is. Any feedback/critique on the Guitar Tone in particular (or my mix if you like) would be greatly appreciated, really greatly appreciated. I feel I am banging my head against the wall at the moment.

Thanks for any feedback/critique left. More gain?, less gain?, more mids?, less Mids? more/less Bass? Whatever you think may help. Oh yeah and a cure for dead/fatigued ears would be nice as well  .

Cheers. :kickass:

The low end seems to be slightly flabby, maybe compress it a bit or reduce some bass. Furthermore it could use a bit more treble and slightly more gain I think.

I think that guitar tone kicks major ass, but your mix could use a couple things.

The snare has too much low mid mud on it and the overheads could be turned up just a tad. Other than that, I think you got something really good goin. The song itself is really badass too

mr.L. , botus99 thanks for your replies. I took your advice and reamped with more gain, more treble and less bass. I then mixed with less snare mud, less low end flub and more OH.

I reamped the tracks with 2 different mic positions, one being the edge of the dustcap and the other being about 10mm from the edge of the dustcap on the actual speaker cone (this needed quite a bit of high EQ boost, but it is less fizzy. The original posted track was this position also).

Thanks again for the replies and here are the 2 new tracks:

Anybody else??? Impart your wisdom onto this gracious n00b  .

Someone else must have an opinion. :erk:

Cheers :kickass:

wow... hmm... I'm thinking your gold lies somewhere between sample one and two...

1 is too bright sounding
2 is too dark sounding...

maybe meet in between... like a good 50/50 in between

I'd personally love to get recorded tone like sample 2... thats more my style... but compared to the majority of what I think you're aiming for... halfway in between, like I said...

Although I think the first one is too bright the second is a definite improvement on the original, a tiny bit more mid and your there (according to my taste that is  ). Already cuts through nicely and sound tight

AudioPhile777 and mr.L. thanks for the reply. I have made the "too bright" (Edge) sample less bright (cutting a little of my high-end EQ, the rest of the EQ remains the same). I have also re-EQ'd the Edge sample with quite different EQ and posted it also. I will get back to the "too dark" sample and try and get some more high-end in there also.

Thanks again for responding. As you can see I don't seem to get many responses on my samples which leads me to instantly think they suck majorly. So your responses are appreciated.

Thanks. :kickass:

of the two new ones... I like the second one... the first sounds too... brittle for some reason...

for that song, I like the second sample... but the first one might sound better elsewhere...

maybe try those same settings on something else and come up with a better understanding of where you're going tone wise?
