Hey, UMF'rs, I am mixing an 8 song rock CD for a client, and I'm starting with this one called "Away From it All". Could you guys give me some feedback on the mix for elements like balance, bad freq choices, and stereo field placement.
thanx

Id pull up a parametric eq ( i think i spelled that right) and literally up the db on a specific frequency and just go up and down the spectrum on each instrument and even the master until you find the bad frequencies. It should become really apparent then and you can just eq accordingly

That is something I do all the time, but what I was asking was, if u could listen the song, and let me know what's go or bad about some of my choices, that would help me out, especially since I haven't bought a good pair of headphones yet, and I use low-cost M-Audio monitors.

The guitars sound a bit dull to me, I would probably try to make them sound more crisp. Generally, I think your mix is a bit bottom-heavy, mainly due to the loud volume of the bass, but you could also try a gentle high-shelf. Also the vocals are really quiet and sound a tad boxy (and sound like they are distorted?), IMO they should be carrying the song, so try to make them more prominent. Same goes for the solo, you can safely make that a bit louder.

Your mix sounds like a good starting point though :)

Took awhile, but I was encouraged by RuflsourusRex to make my rhythm guitar tracks wider. I have Les Paul, and a Schecter, but no Strat, so I went to the pawn shop and bought a Silvertone for 60 bucks, just so I could get different tones at far L/R. I also tightened up a few parts, and mixed through the 2 buss with my new toy (A trail version of Nugen ISL Limiter).
Please let my know what you think.

Hey, guys, I got the lead vocals up in the mix, and got rid of some of the low mid mud. Let me know what you think.

Lyrics to Away From It All

Race you down the highway
Babe, you're goin' my way
She's riding on the divider line a bit
We've been friends since High School
Her boyfriend treats her like a fool
She can't decide if she wants to stay or split

Her engine's running hotter than Hell
Emotions running hot as well
Baby, can I race you for a drink
That makes her raise an eyebrow
I'm pulling out in front now
I pass her by, and she gives me that special wink

Let me take you away from it all
Baby, I can take you to the stars for awhile
When we're laying there and night time starts to fall

I can make you feel
I can make you feel
I can make you feel alive

Her boyfriend's abusive
Makes her elusive
She got the GTO from her dad
Pulling over; the shoulder
She says she wants me to hold her
I show her that her life just ain't that bad

Let me take you away from it all
Baby, I can take you to the stars for a while
When we're laying there and night time starts to fall

I can make you feel
I can make you feel
I can make you feel alive

(Spoken) “Oh, baby
I've had my eye on you since the very first stop sign
Ain't been no stopping me since”

“Let me take you away from it all”

Baby, I can take you to the stars for a while
When we're laying there and night time's 'bout to fall

I can make you feel
I can make you feel
I can make you feel alive

When we're laying there and night time starts to fall

Let me take you away from it all

Let me show you a better life

(Spoken) “Maybe I can take you away as my wife”

I can take you to the stars for awhile

Or forever [/SOUNDCLOUD]

I'm going to keep polishing this turd until I turn "shit into gold". Made some revisions based on earlier posters. This is the first of 8 songs I'm mixing for a client, so I want to get this (the busier of the 8) right before moving on.
Help me out pls.

Starting to sound good now.. Vocals are weird on newest version...would eq it a bit different - it sounds like it's sung in a cardboard box, bring it down and compress it a tad harder with a nicely tuned attacktime (1176 with medium attack and fast release rocks! followed by a la2 <3)..but that's me
As it is now the lead vox are floating on top of the rest and doesn't sound like it's a part of the band.
Backing is too loud imo.
Synth can be brought down a little
Rest is sounding nice - guitars on first version tried sucking my brain out of my right ear...wth did you do on that mix?
