POD xt mix test... I think I nailed it!

-snare needs some slight Eq-ing but the snare samples sounds great.
-guitar tone sounds processed... if you like it it's fine... if you don't lower the gain and treble/presence. I don't like this kind of tone personally.

thanks man!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by processed... could you elaborate? maybe it's the overall track's compression...

processed = artificial sounding

To me most Andy Sneap's guitar tones sound kinda processed. Some people like it, some other people don't (like me). For instance the guitar sound on Nevermore's "The Godless Endeavor" sound processed. The guitar sound on God Forbid's "determination" and "gone forever" does not sound processed. It sounds raw, in your face, real, which i like.

In general using a 5150 with cranked presence and a lot of gain will give you a "processed" feel. Using a Marshall JCM800 or an ENGL Ritchie Blackmore with reasonable gain, reasonable settings (mids : noon, treble : 1h30 , bass: non) and not too much presence with a good pick attack and a V30 cab close-miked with an SM57 may give you a "raw/in your face" tone, and not processed sounding.

See what i mean now ? (if you need more examples of what i mean by "processed guitar tones" and "raw guitar tones" let me know)

ah, now I kinda get your point... so I'm guessing As I Lay Dying's tone in Shadows are Security and An Ocean Between Us sounds kinda processed? I don't know, I'll experiment with what you're saying, I think I like a balance between both, but thanks man!

I'm guessing, it would still be kinda hard getting a non-processed sound outta of a POD, would it not?

I'm not sure about Determination but Gone Forever is 5150II, IIRC...If not a II, it's a 5150. And, it sounds purely like a well miked 5150 series amp. I *believe* Determination is 5150 as well. I know around that time they used 5150's and Line 6 Flextone II HD's.

I'm just checking AILD songs on their Myspace right now and yes... that sounds "processed" to me.

About getting a non-processed sounding guitar tone out of a POD i've heard a few samples that did not sound so processed to me. Reducing gain and not cranking the presence helps. But anyway, i don't mean having a processed-sounding guitar tone is bad, I just don't like it personally.

I remember something like 5150 + XXX...

Anyway i don't mean using a 5150 always gets you a processed-sounding guitar tone. mts *something* (a member of this forum) has posted songs from his band TRIALS using 5150 for recording and the sound is very raw and crushing (reminded me the guitar tone on "Determination" a little bit).

About the God Forbid records mentioned before most of this in your face raw tone is due to a very strong picking (i've seen their guitar players in many "guitar lessons" videos where you hear the string noise as much as the amp itself), moderate gain, moderate presence... I also think using EMG 81 instead of EMG 85 gives you a rawer and edgier tone.

p.s: God Forbid's "Determination" album has a BADASS production... the drums are massive but don't sound like the Suecof/Tue Madsen/Sneap drums we hear nowadays ... bass tone is great... and guitars are in your face... Songs are great also ("Gone Forever" is better in terms of songs though)

I get ya man... I love the recorded tone on the two newer As I Lay albums, but I mean, nuthin' wrong with experimenting as well... so I might do a clip or two taking your suggestion into consideration!

If that's your opinion, it's hard to find a good guitar sound on this forum, right? I mean, most of the people here REALLY like the guitar sound according to Mr. Sneap.

To me processed does not mean bad... i just don't like it much personally...

And there are different degrees of "processed-sounding"-ity (yes i just created a new word ! awesome ! )...

To me the guitar tone on the first Machine Head album is ok... It's fine but i don't dig it that much...on "The godless endeavor" by Nevermore it sounds way too processed for me and i don't like it... Too bad cuz' i love the riffs !

But you're right this kinda "processed guitar tone" is definitely the signature of Andy's work... and the more time passes by the less i like the guitar tone on his productions... And you're right that a lot of people here love this sound and are after it, but sometimes i have good surprises and hear badass in your face tones like the one on the TRIALS stuff...

Anyway this forum is still very useful to me (and helped me a lot to understand that i don't dig processed tone so much :) ) and i'm sorry for all of those "too fizzy/processed for me" comments all over the place :)

I'm with you on that one. I think its because of the "krank love" that things are sounding like that... could be wrong thought...

but I love machine head's tone on that album... no krank either lol

Im not saying, thats not true, but using an EMG in the first place, you are well on your way to getting a processed sound.

Well... maybe... but if you don't use a lot of gain and too much presence, the EMG81 provides you bite/clarity/edge, which is what i'm after... but sure if you use it with tons of gain, cranked presence, scooped settings and so on it will sound ever more processed than with most "normal" pickups i agree.
