EMG 85's sound veeeery raw. Much more like a PAF. Doc Coyle of God Forbid also uses 85's in the bridge.

Apart from that... boosted highs AND boosted presence with a scooped midrange give you a very "processed" sound with a 5150. Just lower the highs, let the presence on around 7, let some mids in there and you get in the raw-area ... (just KILL THE FIZZ - a roll off around 11-12k will get you in the right direction).

Ok my mistake then... i meant "tight" instead of "raw"... and AFAIR 81s are tighter/cleaner/edgier than 85's that are warmer/beefier/fatter. But anyway as already said if you use good settings (the ones you just mentioned) you can get a tight as fuck tone with both (didn't know Doc was using a 85 for rythms though...)

Yes, it's definitly fatter, but IMO the 85 is at least as tight as the 81. Well, that's partly a matter of taste, though

I fiddled around with my 6505 yesterday and came up with a pretty good sounding ballpark-setting (gotta fine-tune it).

Green Channel:
Pre: 6 (or just a tad under 6 ... on my 6505 there is this sweet-spot)
Low: around 6 or 7
Mid: around 5 - 6
Highs: 4.5

Res: 8
Pres: 7

Then the fizz-killer low-pass at around 11-12k, boost at around 100Hz for cabinet and the "usual" 3.5k and 5k boosts and you're there. Maybe also boost at around 400Hz - matter of taste again.

oh I love myself the 85, and I agree, for me, the 85 gives me a rawer tone than the 81

Never read something about the equipment of Doc's Brother.

Well... maybe... but if you don't use a lot of gain and too much presence, the EMG81 provides you bite/clarity/edge, which is what i'm after... but sure if you use it with tons of gain, cranked presence, scooped settings and so on it will sound ever more processed than with most "normal" pickups i agree.

Obviously the settings are extremely important. Try out a ceramic waprig, or a nailbomb from Bare Knuckle Pickups. Very organic but tight sounding!
