F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C album, i cant stop listening to it. Probably their most progressive album, it has some really HARD ROCKIN moments, while their psychedelic, emotional, dreamy elements remain and are classical P. Tree.Steven Wilson has taken the ultimate pill of inspiration, i cant believe how this guy manages to write so much great music all these years.
This one will probably be my second favourite P. Tree album ("Signify" being the 1st). Its perfect.

Agreed...I'm liking this more than In Absentia if only for the two epics, easily two of the best tracks Steven has ever written, and the metallic parts sound more natural here...if anyone says PT isn't prog after hearing the title track, I'll give him a good kicking in the head.

This album simply isn't that great at all, kind of like In Absentia. It had it's moments, but whatever you guys are smoking that convinces you of Steven Wilson doing very much that's "progressive" or "genius", pass me some of that shit!

1. How many times have you listened to "Deadwing"?
2. Do you like progressive/psychedelic rock/metal in general?

1. Twice, lol, and it was mp3s, I'm just predisposed to hate Steven Wilson both because of his collaboration with Opeth and because In Absentia was such a letdown. And that one I must have listened to 30 times, so don't try telling me it was anything but a mediocre album in which the songs dragged on ad nauseum. So far, Deadwing >>> IA.

2. In theory, yes, but I don't really listen to much of it lately.

So in theory and practically, your opinion doesnt count :p
I hated it too when i read that Akerfeldt does some vocals, but who cares. And dont judge Steven Wilson that easily, ignore all the Opeth fanboys who suddenly started praising his name like he is the high school football star and they are the cheerleaders. The man (Wilson - holy fuck i just remembered "Castaway" - wilsoooooooooooooooooon) probably wrote the greatest 90s prog rock albums.

I'll agree with you on Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream and Signify (I think) being good albums, but that's as far as it goes for me! I'll listen to this again, hell, maybe I'll even buy it! If I never get to like it, i'll end up giving it to my girlfriend like I did with In Absentia. And no, opinions on albums are not invalid because the one who offers the opinion isn't an expert in the "genre" under which the album is classified. That's just fucking stupid, and it's not like we're talking about a particularly obscure/experimental/difficult-to-grasp genre.

Its not a matter of being an "expert", its a matter of just listening to the genre and liking it. Progressive rock/metal IS the most "difficult to grasp" genre, compared to all other rock/metal genres (except kraut rock and some post rock maybe). Its in its nature to be like this. Also try "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Voyage 34" i think you'll like them more than all others.

I'm having a hard time trying to "grasp" Deadwing - it's much more progressive and a lot gloomier than any of PT's previous releases, if you ask me. That said, I think the two epic songs are fantastic, and "Halo" is definitely up there with the best material Wilson has written.
Still, I like In Absentia better, if only for its "organic" beauty and its elegant accessibility.

Old thread resurrected - I am finally making my way through the list some of you all gave and am now listening to this Porcupine Tree album. WOW indeed so far... I'm really liking this! I originally asked for albums in the vein of Riverside's 'Out of Myself'. This absolutely fits the bill. Thanks!

have you heard the new riverside, second life syndrome?

totally great, I haven't listened to 'out of myself' much to see how it compares, but it's amazing stuff as well

I found out about them because they were said to sound like PT :P

I heard the new Riverside last night. I find myself liking the debut a bit more. Not sure why. The melodies and ambience of 'Out of Myself' just does more for me than the new one (mind you the debut was a tough one to top in my book). 'Second Life Syndrome' is still a very good album.
