Actually, Tech reports have said the iPod has the least amount of repairs then any other mp3 player on the market, so technically, it's the most reliable mp3 player to buy. But when you dominate the mp3 market with 87%, and have sold millions of players, even if the repair rate is only 10%, that's still a few hundred thousand units. I've never had a problem with any of them I've owned, and I currently have 3.

aw man Paul, I never said buy a Microsoft Zune instead

to be honest, I think Creative makes the best ones out there for durability and reliability.

and another thing about Apple: they force you to use a shit program like iTunes (or search for a 3rd party alternative) in order to manage the player. You can't drag & drop media on and off the player right out of the box. With Creative's, you can.

well maybe its something about the ones shipped here... i know plenty of people whove had lots of problems with iPods... thats why ive never even bothered. and i agree with kenneth... drag and dropping is SO convenient compared to using itunes.

Sorry guys, I'm not trying to convince anyone, but there are several good 3rd party, freeware applications that enable drag and drop on the iPod. check out http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/ for Mac, Windows, and Linux. It runs directly off the iPod. That's just one of many, so you don't necessarily NEED to use iTunes.

And if you're really inclined, there's software called RockBox, that hacks the iPod, allows you to install Linux on it, and run a completely different OS and software on it, setting it up any way you wish, without the normal Apple limitations.

Have you personally tried it yourself Paul? I'm kind of curious about it but I don't want non-Apple software to fuck-up my Ipod.

thanks, i'll pass this info on to my mom who has one.

well i use rockbox on my iriver just so i can use my own skins and have better features and plugins. works fine after a bit of tinkering and some help from a couple of forums. i linked a help forum earlier in the thread and i cant remember it off the top of my head now, so if you need a hand look around there and oyull find an ipod link there somewhere.

Okay, for those who give a shit (I'm not kidding myself that this is much of anyone...), I brought my iPod back from the dead.

Here's what I had to do to revive it:

First of all, I want to say that I tried over and over to restore and do things suggested on the apple support fora, and every now and then, I'd get a glimmer of hope. It would get to needing to flash the memory by plugging it into the wall wart, or it would begin updating, only to fail, saying the disk was corrupted. For a while, I basically gave up. But after a while, I was getting pissed, so I did all of this...

1. Revert back to iTunes version 6.05 (which meant having to find it somewhere online, as Apple doesn't everintend for you to be able to revert to old versions. Old Version Download - OldApps.com was a great resource with helpful fora).

2. Attempted to reformat the iPod with windows device manager or some such shit. It basically told me the disk was fucked.

3. Ran iPod diagnostics. I didn't even know this existed. Actually, I found it by mistake because my 2 year old was messing with what I had deemed my $300 paper weight. I figured she couldn't make it any worse. In fact, she might have helped fix it! (You reset the iPod by holding menu and the action button. Then, when the apple logo appears, hit Rewind and action. You get a whole menu of diagnostic tests you can run. It's actually pretty cool.)

4. Took it out of the protective plastic case I keep it in (it seemed really hot).

5. My wife remembered that she had heard something about giving the iPod a whack, like burping a baby, on the bottom (where you connect the USB cable). So she did that. When I worked in a studio where we had a Neve console, we had to do this with the EQ section fairly frequently. We called it "percussive maintenance".

And then when I plugged it in, I had success. It had me register the damn thing again and started updating. It now works. What was it that did the trick? I don't know really, but I'm guessing it was the percussive maintenance. Am I going to go back to iTunes 7.02? Hell, no.

I am, however, a bit pissed to find that some of my music has mysteriously disappeared! Only 1 song off of Otyg's Sagovindars Boning remains, and my Def Leppard Pyromania folder exists, but there's nothing in it (yeah, I know there's probably a joke in there somewhere...). But losing my music? WTF?

Anyhow, thought I'd let y'all know in case you have similar probs in the future. Remember: do all you can to save it cuz those Apple 'tards will claim it's a hardware problem and needs to be replaced.

I'd just be glad I had my mp3 player back, never mind about the music!! Props for 'percussive maintenance' and using the correct plural form of the word forum:lol: Well done soundave and thanks for posting your findings. I might show this page to a couple of friends and see how they go.

I'm very glad. I was lost without it, so its revival, in essence, saved me anywhere from $180-$300 some odd dollars. Good news when you can't justify that kind of expense (baby #2 on the way...)

I always wonder if people here are like, "Fora...?" I'm not going to dumb it down. I actually heard a sportscaster talk about the weather at two different stadia, and I about gave her a standing O. My wife thinks we should just call them stadiums, but I used to be an English teacher (among other things), so old habits die hard. I try not to engage in the pointless grammar/spelling battles that sometimes happen here when people can't find anything worthwhile to argue about and need to prove their superiority in silly ways.
