You know those things you attach to a mic stand. Anyone know what's best for a good price etc?

Any horror stories ?

Anybody know of samples of Real Traps' PVB for used with screamed/growled vocals or louder vocals in general?

Only examples my searching returned were speaking. I'd be willing to buy it if it can handle the loud stuff.

Pretty sure Ryan (Catharsis Studios) uses that one and does mostly hardcore vocals

edit:

I might get the Primacoustic Voxguard, not because it's the best but because I can get a discount.

Get some wood and blankets. Worked for us.
Works for a band recording themselves but not for a studio trying to keep up a certain quality level.
Only other DIYers like to see DIY gear.

I think Sturgis uses Real Traps. But from this video.

Can't think of a single reason why it would work worse for louder of different styled vocals

I'd really like to hear an A/B of the Real Traps.

I have a small closet for which I can buy a couple boxes of acoustic foam and cover completely, for less money than buying a PVB.
But I would also have to install a window to visually monitor my computer and stuff since I only ever record myself.. although I can do the installation myself, the materials for the window and acoustic foam would run me about the same as a PVB.

wat do ¯\(°_o)/¯

I'm looking at a guy with an avatar where he's got a baby's crib or something in the background. I'm assuming he isn't running a studio. If he is, he should know the answer to this question already.

Fundamentally in a proper studio, you need a vocal booth with some diffusion panels in there, and a talkback facility.

In a band, or a hobbyist studio.... you can get by with the DIY method. It's the sound that matters, not necessarily the construction of the booth.

I might just set up my mic in front of the big window in my room and open the window.

All the sound goes right out. Sucks for my neighbors though

I'm also interested in this, I've noticed a lot of nasty room reflections when I compress really hard. It's not too noticeable in heavy sections, but in soft sections it sounds REALLY groce.

So far, I've done a fair bit of research on the RealTraps PVB and it seems like it's worth the money.

I messaged Sturgis as well, and he recommended it.
Real Traps also has a few examples of singing/speaking on their site but they stream them online and the audio sounds shitty. I think they offer mp3 download of the samples as well, but disregarding the shittiness of the audio quality, you can tell that there's a good improvement of loss of room tone.

I'm wondering if there's a cheaper option... That thing is 300$, the sE isn't much cheaper either.

the realtraps are just a couple pieces of 1" 703/705 in a metal frame. you can make something alot cheaper(under $70) that will work just as good.
just get two or 3 of these

and a piano hinge (or 2) from a from the hardware store and figure out a way to clamp them to a stand and your set.
before my live room was done I just clamped a couple ats 4ft panels to mic stands and it worked great.
