Portnoy vs. drum techs

I get why he is pissed. I'd be pissed. There's a lot more behind that frustration that you guys might not know. One thing is that Portnoy has an endorsement contract with Sabian and he should always be playing Sabian cymbals but for some reason these tech guys got him Zildjian cymbals for that tour so they forced him to infringe his contract throughout that whole tour. And this is just one of the dozens of things that went wrong.

Still he is a performer and his contract bullshit is not the crowd's business. He should STFU and play the gig with positive spirits no matter what.

A funny thing though... stuff like this used to be considered cool. Metal bands trashing the stage etc. was "rock'n'roll" ... but I guess Portnoy's girly attempt of being a rockstar doesn't belong in that category. :D I love Portnoy but had to say this.

What I read on his forum (posted by himself) was not about the cymbals, at least that wasn't the trigger, it was because the snare mic had fallen off, he was signalling one of the techs trying to show the mic, and the tech took away the mic instead of putting it back on, leaving his snare with no mic. Yes, that's why he stopped playing and started insulting the techs on a microphone, because he was worried no one was gonna hear his wonderfull snare drum playing (because somehow no snare comes through the overheads in the Philipines or wherever the fuck he was). Of course, he explained it was an accumulation of a lot of things during the tour, mostly promoters not giving a shit about the gear demanded in the rider like bass amp, drums, etc. and local techs being generally incompetent. Still, just wrong. I am a Portnoy fan, I love almost everything he's done, but yeah he really should've kept it together and just went on playing.

Wow. Seems it all started to go down when he threw his stick in the air and missed the catch.

Agreed with Clark - stfu and play the damn set. Him calling his techs names and whatnot just looks very childish.

geez. hire a fucking drum tech instead of expecting some local kid that looks 16 years old to set up your kit/watch it for the duration of the show.. even if it was provided backline they should have still had a tech that was with the band who knows the expectation of how he likes his kit set up

I don't know him but if he pays people to have his set as he wants it he have every right to do this IMO.

I think it's an accumulation of many things. the snare mic issue was just the trigger that made him snap, I guess.
If Billy Sheehan broke a string in the middle of his solo, he wouldn't freak out but conceal it somehow.
