Portnoy vs. drum techs

To be clear - I could not care less about how Mike Portnoy acts, I could care even less about commenting on how he acts or treats others as it's simply his problem.

But, I will comment on something I do find a bit funny coming from this particular forum - a place where it has become common place to publicly complain and bitch about the lack of skill, the unprofessionalism, the whateverthefuckyoufindwrong about any given band possibly paying the bills for you to make even a minimal living engineering, recording, producing, making music.

Criticizing anyone else for behavior that if it came in a forum post from one of our regulars about "how shitty the last band you produced was" would garner all sorts of positive affirmation is a bit of hypocrisy in it's grandest form - just in my personal opinion of course. It's happens here every day in a very publicly accessible forum.

Don't get me wrong - Mike Portnoy may very well be an asshole, hell I may very well be an asshole - but "holier than thou" proclamations from persons on a forum where public criticism is brought to an art form at times is slightly humorous in a questionable sort of way - come on you have to admit at least that?

+1 It's only worth criticizing if its video'd and put in the Internet.

It isn't the same thing. This is just engineers in a community bitching to each other. It'd be a bit more of the same situation if Portnoy had gone into a community of musicians and bitched about it, instead of throwing a hissy fit in front of God and everyone else.

We're not in a position of public interest so venting on a private level isn't the same as making a scene publicly and specifically having a tantrum. I wouldn't begrudge Portnoy leaving the stage at the end of the night and having words to the techs or saying anything derisive about the sound guys to his band mates or whatever because thats not the same as throwing shit around and generally aggravating the problem.

I don't really care much what Mike Portnoy does or doesn't do. I'm a mild DT fan, and I admire his drumming skill. We all get pissed sometimes, but I don't see why he couldn't have just finished the song and then halted for two minutes to attach his own damn snare mic. The tech looked like some 16 year old kid who barely understood English and was frightened/ confused. What do you expect? You're in a foreign country.

Anywho I'm sure he could've handled it differently but I'm not going to waste any more time giving a shit about it or trying to judge the dude.

Not really that different - can a band you recorded come to the public forum and read your thoughts on them? As I said - I could care less if someone has a public tantrum, that's their issue, it only reflects upon them. I just find it a bit funny the fact that if it was someone, a regular from these forums, bitching publicly about a band they did business with they would get LOLs  and virtual high fives and not be questioned on their "professionalism". While not in the business of music myself, I'm certainly in a business where I have clients and while I may bitch to my wife about them, I'm professional enough to not publicly express my opinions of them in open forums. I don't bitch about them in my circle of friends on social media let alone somewhere they could somewhat easily find my private thoughts.

Further - I'd rather confront someone one on one with my negative opinion of them instead of semi-anonymous rantings to other forumites.

As always, these are just personal thoughts, nothing more, nothing less and certainly not something that others need to agree with. Just thought it was funny is all.

Yeah cause taking their gear from the US to The Philippines by truck is a great idea, you should be their tour manager hahaha
Well my use of the word "truck" was obviously taken too literally there, driving that far would of course be stupid as fuck, flying gear out and renting a van or bus would not be, which is obviously what the guys i mentioned, i was just curious if anyone else found it weird that that they really expected a cymbal specific rider to be fulfilled perfectly night to night on tour.

but thanks for lashing out at a perfectly innocent genuine question, from someone who doesn't have tour experiance hence asking in the first place, makes you look cool

Don't take it so personal dude, it was just a joke. If there's a rider and there's an agreement that the details of it will be taken into account, how do you not expect it to be fulfilled? Especially the cymbals, as someone mentioned, the cymbal thing is not because he's a whiny bitch who won't play without his Sabians, it's because he is bound by contract to use Sabians exclusively.

You keep saying "driving that far", do you not realize that Asia is not in the USA? You can't drive there, period, far or not. Flying gear out, as he mentioned himself in the forum post that Marcus copied here, was not an option, the only way to make that tour happen was to do it as it was done. I guess yes, you were the only one who found it weird, it's perfectly normal.

The cymbals thing is weird. I've never known a drummer not to travel with a cymbal bag for fly dates. I've also seen companies overnight a full kit's worth of cymbals to venues for endorsers at a much lower status level. In the US backline substitutions are pretty regular and I have to imagine that things are exponentially more difficult in countries that may not even have many dealers let alone backline houses. Still, the onus is on the promoter to provide what he agrees or work it out with the artists management. OTOH ignoring rider requests is an artform for many promoters.
