Portnoy vs. drum techs

Maybe more effort, more practice, better songwriting, better live shows, better promo, etc. will lead to crowds that give a shit? You make it sound like my (small) fanbase was handed to me on a silver platter.

I love to throw around "insulting" comments because people with no experience in situations like Portnoy should just stfu and stop pretending they know what it's like. Half of the guys who call Portnoy a cunt would be the first to get their panties in a bunch when the local guys fuck up. And what you might find insulting others might call "reality check". But that's just more of the typical forum-behavior: whining and bitching when people say things you don't like.

As I said; chill the fuck out. You're being an asshole.

Any guy on here who has played even ONE gig has most likely had nothing but a shitty experience, shit gigs with shit happening are the rule, not the exception in most cases, even if you're a "bigger" band.

I'm not saying that Portnoy's behavior is good etiquette or generally something to be emulated, but I know shitloads of bands who play at a level from 200-2000 people venues. And I've seen someone freak out at a local tech/hand/promoter in every one of these bands at some point. I'm not saying that it's the "correct" behavior (which is why it took 15 years until it happened to me) but I'm saying it's something that happens when you tour. Mainly because of the way touring works and how stressful it gets. And that's something that people who don't tour can't understand because they've never done it - which is why they should not pass judgment on something they have no experience with.

That's fair enough.

People should be allowed to go crazy passing judgement though, if I go to a restaurant and my particular plate of food was deemed suck-worthy by me, I should be allowed to criticize the chef and say the food sucked, even if I myself am not a chef and can't even burn toast, even if everyone else's meal was "superb" etc etc.

There should be no harm in calling Mic Port-Annoy a douche....... ESPECIALLY on an internet forum.............if we can't do it here, then where can we.

OK, let's be less dumb for once. "Sweeping generalizations", did someone say ? Sweeping generalizations are often made by people unable to read precisely what gas been clearly written. And what should I think of the highly philosophical statement "for every asshole technician there is an asshole musician, because deep down they are the same type of person" ? Peremptory. And such a truism. Yeh, an asshole is an asshole, I think we can agree with that.

He may had some reasons to be upset. But lost all the reason in the moment he did that shit in front of an audience.

I think he forgot that he isnt in a big band anymore. So the shitty conditions comes without much surprise. But clearly he still feels like a rockstar and thinks that has the right to do whatever he want. Fuck him.

I've toured a fair amount (in rougher conditions than a series of fly dates) and I've screamed at a few people but I can't recall putting down my instrument and throwing mics across the stage. I doubt you've done that either.
I think most of us agree he had right to be pissed but that he reacted like a spoiled child in a grocery store and not like a guy who has toured professionally for 20+ years. I don't think you need to be a road warrior to recognize that his freakout was unprofessional and obviously he realizes that as well given that he felt the need to publicly explain himself.

Shit happens. He had a breakdown... it happens. It's humane. Just like dropping a drumstick on your balls. It happens. ;)

If I'd been gigging with DT for 25 years and then I effed it up and ended up playing to smaller crowds and realized that the comforts I was used to have on stage were also gone I'd probably break much worse. This is just the era of internet where people have to behave in a politically correct way 100% of the time or they'll get publicly bashed.

I'm pretty sure we've all made mistakes bigger than this in our lifes. Yes, Portnoy was a acting like a child there but being overly critical over this would be hypocritical. :)

Am i the only person who finds it really bizarre that they didnt take gear on tour with them? he said they couldn't afford it, shouldn't have went, i'm mates with a band who regularly do world tours and are always in russia, they aren't famous by any means but they always find a way to truck their gear out there and because it is expensive to do that, they often sleep thier shitty van, which in russia isn't alway warm, but then they have no-one else to relay on or blame.

See if you buds can tour in the states with their own equipment and afford it.

Point is, none of those musicians (in the OP) deserve to sleep in a shitty van.

Getting pissed isnt the issue... even if he DID feel the need to stop in the middle of the song, he could've walked back with the dude and talked it over with him... even if he had to yell, still done it behind the scene a bit, not thrown his shit all over the place then shit talk everybody for the crowd to see. Its ridiculous, really.

I get pissed all the time working on shit... sometimes I gotta drop a "dude the fuck are you doing?" on people, but its never some hugely public thing like that. Not that Im some big star either, its just the point. No need for that.

It's not "humane", it's human, there's nothing humane about dropping a drumstick on your balls ;-)

I guess we can all agree he was in the right to be pissed but definitely wrong to have publicly expressed it the way he did? Good, I'll take all the ballots and send them to him with our verdict, I'm sure he's impatiently waiting for it

Yeah cause taking their gear from the US to The Philippines by truck is a great idea, you should be their tour manager hahaha

Look, I'll cater to your high standards and I'll try to be less dumb for once

Right now I have a nice steady IT job, but through a (luckily) short period of my life I went through the living hell that is beeing a tech/foh dude, and while I take myself as a relatively competent and hard working individual, i've met a whole plethora of musicians that would just shit on my life. And metal artists are the nicest bunch there is, rapppers.. now those guys take the cake, those are people will take you to the edge of your sanity. That's why my first point is that both sides have their fair share of assholes, and my second point is that you don't throw shit around in a tantrum, you just don't.

hopefully this clears stuff a bit more

prick.

Tbh, nearly everyone I've ever met involved with music has been cool. There is the 1% of fucking cunt arseholes who you just wouldn't piss on if they were on fire, though. I'm thinking specifically of these two cunts who tour managed for Helloween when I was working the merch at Shepherds Bush Empire. Those motherfuckers can literally get raped and then rot in hell and DIE DIE DIE DIE.

So yeah, it aint just FOH and techs. Tour managers and merch gophers can be absolute fucktards too.
