So is this the first real death metal album? Growled vocals, crazy riffs, and a frickin' song called Death Metal, all from 1985. Good stuff.

Discuss. :Spin:

probably ... saw this in a record store when it was originally released on LP back in 85 I beleieve. I will never forget those pics of the band on the back ... covered in blood and skulls and all the good shit.
I was literally frightened and intrigued at the same time.
Eventually got it for $5.99 on sale on LP and was fucking blown away when I heard it ... the growling vocals were a definite first ... I cannot think of anyone else before them that had done that.

I actually liked their subsequent releases also, even though in some ways they pulled a "Metallica" on their fans.

I guess these genre originator bands are always into innovation :hypno:

On the Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People DVD the band is going through some pictures of Ler dressed in full leather: "okay, you got the upside down crosses on right? okay good." :loco:

He wasn't Primus' first guitarist actually, before they started recording Todd Huth was on guitar.

It's ok, revolutionary I guess, but there's tonnes better in my opinion.
just picture yourself hearing it for the first time ... with no other band ever sounding this heavy ... with no other reference point. it was like a sledgehammer

Man this album rules. I'm glad I bought it last year and finally started listening to it. :loco:

Very true. But I'm an ignorant young one.:)

So anyway, when is Slayer considered to be 'thrash' and not 'early death metal'. I mean, it's not like Show No Mercy was any less brutal than Seven Churches, right?

Seven Churches: i wouldnt call it death metal, but the most raw and barbaric thrash metal album. Scream Bloody Gore is the first death metal album imo
Slayer (except Reign In Blood) compared to Seven Churches are kindergarden
(with all the respect to Slayer)

Slayer were never Death Metal IMHO ... I think Slayer in their own way defy categorization. They were not Death Metal, not really Thrash, certainly not punk ... they are just SLAYER

Seven Churches was definetelly a death metal record. Scream Bloody Gore was not much different ... and it came years later.

The Tubular Bells intro to THE EXORCIST still gives me the creeps to this day ...

Tubular Bells = FUCKING METAL!!!!!!111111 The first 2 or 3 minutes anyhow, the rest is kinda gay, but I still like it alright.

Seven Churches was the first DM album. Scream Bloody Gore is similar to it. Sepultura's Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions need to be mentioned.
