Possible Legalization of Recreational Marijuana use in California

We posted about this in another thread...

A reincarnation of Prop 215 is expected to be on the Nov 2nd ballot this year... but the legalization of it in CA presents some funny situations.

As soon as someone registers to be a legal reseller of marijuana (aka when it gets taxed), they're violating federal law, and the DEA can just use the forms they signed when registering to incriminate them. The counter-argument would be that the federal government doesn't do much about current medical marijuana facilities, and enough states legalizing it would sway the federal ruling on it's legality, but I'm not confident that would work.

Gay marriage wasn't even legalized in CA in 2008 - I don't think marijuana will be in 2010. Young people came out in record numbers to vote for Obama/Prop 8 (in CA), and while the presidential election was as close as most usually are, Prop 8 was still overturned (thanks Mormons!). I honestly think there's less people into legalizing pot than are into gay marriage rights, even in this state of fruits and nuts.

But none of this changes the fact that ballot initiative propositions and direct democracy are the worst things to ever happen to CA legislature. :(

I keep hearing about this, so why is there no thread for it? Or did I miss it?

slightly old news, Californians have know about the legalization since march of last year and the fact that it will be on the November ballot about two months ago

Great, now all the fast food employees will be stoned out of their mind when they cook my meal.

as if all the teens that work at fast food resutrants aren't already chronic wake-n-bake smokers, most of the idiots I wnet to school with ended up an McDonalds and brag about smoking and even go to work stoned, so not like its going to change much. Besides, this is California, you are on the other side of the country :zombie:

@Jeff: You don't really care for California much do you?

Where in my post did you get that impression from? I absolutely love this state, but our 'direct democracy' bullshit has only served to perpetuate careers of criminals and to bankrupt ourselves. California is the land of fruits and nuts - in San Francisco, even the weather is queer. Why the fuck anyone living here would trust the general populace to pass laws and policies is beyond me.

I will tell you what I don't care for, though... you NoCal-ers claiming to be a part of this great state. :yuk: NorCal - California for pussies.

the laws and policies since I have been paying attention to them have been around social laws and taxable services (either increasing or decreasing depending on the measure). The actual budget is still very well being handled by the people we vote in to office, the experts, or the people who are supposed to be experts on economics.

Prop 8 is not a good thing to compare to, as opinions on that issue had so many different angles and even I found myself quite torn. I have said that marriage definitely needs a facelift and an indefinite separation of church and state and state marriage reforms would be required to change the tradition to allow everybody to be happy. I think Marijuana is a more black and white situation.

Great state, your half is mostly desert and excessively hot. Besides, just like Canada is America's hat, we are SoCal's hat.

I for one am all for legalization. Fuck yeah! Wish I lived there. That's my home state.

Edit: About employes cooking fast food while stoned. IDGAF. I know for a fact lots of them get stoned anyways. I used to be one of them. I would only eat fast food if all the other food in the world vanished anyways. Yes, I'm being selfish. ;) Light the world on fire! Lets get baked!

You're a FAG! haha You're right though, Nor-cal is only good for the best weed and being the birthplace of modern metal.

Oaksterdam FTW!!!!

I'm sorry dude, you're completely wrong about the budget. We increasingly allocate less funds to education and more to the prison system - tell me that's handling things well?

Social issues are fine - it's the taxable ones that have screwed us over. We have never voted for an increase in taxation, regardless of where the money would be allocated - you can argue that "well they shouldn't be increasing taxes," but the fact is that the extra income would help a shit ton when it comes to services like police, firefighters, hospital works, and public education, and I'm talking about things like a .25% raise in sales tax, nothing astronomical. Normally, lawmakers would just vote in the house/assembly to raise the taxes, and it would get done, but we get the distinct privilege of letting every dumbass in the state vote on it.

We're proving Marx's theory on democracy: As soon as a populace learns that it can vote itself money, it will bankrupt the state.

I used Prop 8 as an example because it drove out droves of conservatives spouting ridiculous arguments as support for it - I think this marijuana legalization prop will have the exact same effect.

Our half may be mostly desert, but we brought you Vans shoes and In-N-Out - two of the most distinctly Californian things in the world.

Besides... if our half is excessively hot, why do the 18 million in the LA area alone outnumber the entire population of NoCal?

The best weed is grown in Sonoma, Humbolt, and Mendocino County... You ever been there? Some of the shittiest places on earth! haha

Let's just all agree on one thing - non-costal regions of California suck asshole.

All the illegal growers in CA are going to vote against it, because they're afraid it will hurt their sales (which it probably will)... I think that will have a big impact on whether or not it passes...

What are you talking about? Sonoma and mendocino are shitty? Sure there's some backwoods parts, but both of those places are considered vacation spots and are nice.

Well I can agree on that somewhat. But that's because there's nothing in mendocino and I don't generally like the people in sonoma.

That's what I didn't want to say so explicitly . There's this really weird kinda white-trash mentality in that area. A couple of my friends go to Sonoma State and are transferring ASAP... absolutely hate it up there.

you guys have given the world some good shit. Up here its a little slower in pace.

To correct, though, Los Angeles County consensus of 2009 was 10M and Northern California has 13M, where 2.1M from Sacramento Metropolitan area (and was voted in the top 10 best cities to live in America in 2004) and 7.4M from the Bay Area.

Northern California is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the cities of San Jose and San Francisco (the 3rd and 4th largest cities in the state), Sacramento (the state capital), Oakland, as well as the redwood forests, the northern California coast, the Big Sur coastline area, the Sierra Nevada including Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe, Mount Shasta (the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range), and the Central Valley, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions.

And with things being decently populated but still almost rural, with all the agriculture and vineyards, we are a bunch of smug, fart smellin', hybrid driving wine sippers, haven't you seen South Park, I laughed my ass off that whole episode.

Those places are shitty because they are full of over the boarder pot growers. I will have to agree that beyond the metropolitan areas which are extremely nice I will add, most of northern California is just pretty to look at and filled with a bunch of ass backwards farms, small meth/dope cities, you know typical white trash hicksville. Not like LA has issues with minorities, gangs and the projects if you know what I mean.

Like I said, the metropolitan areas are extremely nice and not everyday crowded, and the scenery is quite nice. In the end, I wouldn't say any one half of California is better, its more of a preference because we are two very different cultures.
