PP4 opinons

Glenn, thanks again, I know I told you in person along with 100s of others, but THANKS.

I think this year's experience was much better than last years.

Having some autographs in the downstairs area was the best thing that happened. Last year was a mob scene in the vendor area trying to get some signatures. All the bands should sign in there, it makes it easy for people to know that ALL the signings would be in one place. I know a lot of people mentioned that after last year here, myself included, and am glad it happened (for the most part).

My major complaint about the whole experience was the temperature Saturday night. It was unbelievably cold, so cold that we left 3 songs into Rage cause we couldn't stand it. One in our group got sick, and talking to others some other people weren't feeling too good because of it either. Forcing our group to buy LS t-shirts to put on in addition to what we were wearing is an evil marketing ploy by the vendors... have them spanked.

One minor complaint, GB people were being told that in order for us to do a re-entry we would have had to get back in the long line as the regular ticket holders were waiting to get in. A lot of people were upset with this because that's why we paid the extra moolah, to not have to wait in line. No one could understand why if you flash the GB to the door people you just couldnt go in one of the other doors, made no sense.

I thought all the bands that I saw were GREAT.

I didn't see Redemption.

Mercenary was incredible. The sound was perfect. They were everything that I was expecting them to be.

Vanden Plas was pretty cool, although the bass seemed to dominate the mix in their set. I found myself trying to listen too much to hear some guitar or vocals at times while they played. I only had 2 albums from them and was glad I knew a good portion of their set.

Nightwish.... ummm... performance of the festival. I DID miss the first 4 songs I think because I was too busy hanging out with Jon Oliva.. "Costa Rica" (those of you who were down there will know what that means, and I couldn't believe he yelled it out during C2C's set :Spin:). Meeting some of the guys in Nightwish at the pre-show was very cool, and getting to meet all the rest was great. I've never heard them live before and have only recently (about a year or so) been listening to them and was totally blown away.

Symphony X... too loud of a mix for my tastes comparing sounds to every other band. I only got to see the first 4-5 songs because I kept falling asleep - YES asleep. I was operating on about 6 hours sleep for the past 2 days and it all caught up with me, so I went back to the hotel for some much needed rest. The first part of the set I did see though, was GREAT. I can't wait for the chance to see them again.

Pagan's Mind I really enjoyed alot as well as Secret Sphere. Both had a great sound and I thought both were fantastic.

Circle II Circle... 2nd place after Nightwish for stealing the event. Where was Glenn on stage singing Chance???? heheheh :tickled: We all knew that they were gonna play some Savatage songs, but I would have never guessed Follow Me and Taunting Cobras at all. I can't wait to see them again in a couple weeks. !!!

Evergrey was pretty damn good too, first time I've seen them. I have all the albums and love every one of them but I think my opinion on their performance was distorted a bit after seeing C2C. They were great, don't get me wrong. Also by this tiume the arctic temperatures in the place had me shivering and turning blue.

Rage I really wanted to stay and see especially after wating the first 3 songs of thier set but it was too frickin cold in that place to stand it. the 1st three sounded great though and I'm mad that I couldn't stick it out to see the whole set.

---
As usual all the attendees that I met were extremely cool. The only person I met that posted on the forum though was the guy from C2C.

Glad to see the bartender back from last year (wink/nudge), hope to see her again next year as well as the girl that worked the private area at the Riveria, she made some of the best kamikazes I've ever had.

Well, I enjoyed myself and loved the music, but in my opinion this was a step down from last year's PP, not by any fault of the venue or bands really, but of some of the attendees. I knew it was a bad omen when I saw Deicide shirts upon entering the venue on friday. The good vibe of PP3 wasn't so much there, there were alot more annoying assholes, especially during Rage's set, which pissed me off to a great extent. Other than Nightwish (and Evergrey's guitar tech), I think Rage stole the show, but half the time I couldn't pay them much attention because I was in a shoving or shouting contest and almost getting in a fight with some imbecile pushing my girlfriend, so that was a terribly sour note to end on. I guess it was only a matter of time before the gutter trash milwaukee crowd started seeping in, but hell - 3 years was a good run for a metal festival to have a reasonably well meaning and adult crowd. Probably a record.

Aside from that bitching there, I loved all of the bands. I do agree that SymX had a bad mix, it was way too loud and ROmeo's guitar sound was surprisingly the worst of the night. No mid-range, and if there was any thickness to it it was blocked by the deafening high frequency noise.

I doubt anything will ever measure up to a first time in the states line-up including Blind Guardian, Edguy and Gamma Ray, but the money was certainly well spent this year, and PP is still the best festival in the US. Maybe a few more "happy" sounding power metal bands or full on prog bands next year will deter the Dying Fetus show-goers and spare me the annoyance. I'm surprised they bought tickets to a show with Nightwish headlining as it is.

Still - hope ProgPower just gets bigger and better. Glen is a king among men.

I was wearing short sleeve and shorts, my girlfriend was wearing a see-through knit top, and she had no problems... I wouldn't even have called the venue chilly or brisk...

I didn't care at all about the mosh pit (although I am surprised it wasn't broken up), what annoyed me was that stupid prick holding up that Nightwish banner thingy during their set. He was blocking the view of everyone behind him and I was considering forcibly removing the damned thing from his possession...

They're buying the tickets anyway, they've been there every year so far. There were only two unashamedly metal bands on the bill this year (and there were zero problems in the crowd for the band with the death growls...). Only two. How much more do you propose then?

All it would have taken is a security guard coming in and giving a warning (and if they ignored it, removing the offenders) and I think these guys would have sat still.

I think the vibe was just as good as past years, with the reaction Vanden Plas, Evergrey, and Symphony X got... but thank god they can't headline every year. ;)

Yeah, luckily I'm pretty damn tall and I could see over that guy during Nightwish, but a few people around me were visibly annoyed by him as well. As far as Rage goes, a number of people left the room outright after getting bothered repeatedly during the Rage set, which is bad for the band first of all. "Moshing" I don't care about, if you don't bother me or the people who don't want any part of, and you should get the hint after getting pushed away violenty once or twice, especially from a female, and not come back and hit her in the face with your middle finger. Oh, and I didn't think anyone would mosh for Mercenary, because one of them was wearing a sparkly shirt.:tickled: All I'm saying is i've been to a million and one underground death metal shows, I used to play them all the time, and there are certain people who go to these shows and think they're on the bill, they shout annoying things out at the bands, run around trying to get everyone's attention, try and have a little show of their own. Its annoying to those of us who pay to see a band and don't want to have to get in a fist fight to be left alone. Of course its a relative thing, if you weren't in the immediate area of it, you wouldn't care, but especially seeing as how its how the night ended, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Its a minor thing, but some of those same people annoy me anyway without the moshing. You're right about the security guards, and that was what we were all wondering at the time, God knows they're there if you stand on the stairways for more than 3 seconds.

They're buying the tickets anyway, they've been there every year so far. There were only two unashamedly metal bands on the bill this year (and there were zero problems in the crowd for the band with the death growls...). Only two. How much more do you propose then?

I was mostly joking. You know, its hard to act out like that when the tempo of a song changes every other measure, or when some guy is singing some happy melody line. Joking, really, I personally cut my teeth on more extreme metal a long time ago. Death is the band that made me want to start playing guitar, so don't take me for cookie cutter power metal guy who just wants to sing along to every happy chorus both days. But these people annoy me, and the more...mature atmosphere of ProgPower is one of the great things about it, and I don't want that to change.

On another note, I WOULD say if possible (its not always as they are in a bit shorter supply) to have a couple more Prog bands to break things up. All the bands were great this year, but at some point it was a bit monotonous. The previous year there was such a variety of unique sounds, but as I said, I enjoyed every band, so no big deal.

everyone's gonna feel differently about the temp.. all i know is even my friend the butcher (not Oliva, an actual butcher) who works in north-pol-type weather all the time was freezing... and he's never cold. It could have been the way the air was circulating.. but we sat in the same area both nights and it wasnt like that Friday.

// edit start //

and dont make fun of shirts :p (joke) I was in a Ramones shirt, Evil Dead and a Night of the Living Dead shirt for the events. Although I did see someone in an Evil Dead hockey jersey ?!?! never saw one of those before.

My short take (I will try an post a better write up):

Day 1

Redemption - Could have been a lot better but I think the board mix sucked bad. I have the album and I split on it. some songs come off very well done while others felt like they were stiched together. The Prymary guys did a decent job backing the rest of the members. I wouldn't go as far as being disapointed but I felt it could have been a lot better. Rank #5

Mercenary - Didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised and somewhat entertained. I do agree the guitarist had some chops and the rest of the band was very tight. I can put up with some growling and they pulled it off nicely...they didn't make me scream out "GET SOME FUCKEN VOCAL LESSONS" :). The lead singer at times reminded me of Rob Halford, mostly the way he handled himself on stage...I mean that as compliment as I value Halford a lot! :) Very good set, they sold me on their new album so I ran out an got it! Rank #3

Vanden Plas - First time seeing this guy (as I am sure goes the same for most of us) and I own pretty much most of their CD's (although I tappered off lately and have no picked up the new one). At first I got into VP because of DT (Dream Theater) and them touring together. I thought well that can't be all that bad opening up fof DT. They are not! They have some solid albums and I do enjoy listens from time to time. Very gifted musicians and Andy can sing...HOWEVER I don't know how to put this but I got burnt out after the first 3 songs and partially through the 4th. Nothing against them at all...the mix was very good (bass was loud) for the most part but they did not click for me. Rank #4

Nightwish - I LOVE THIS BAND! I have been a fan since I bought Oceanborn and a day probably never goes by without a Nightwish tune. Awesome! If any drawback at all was that they did not play a few songs from their older albums but just having them in US soil was a wish come true for me! I was also very moved after hearing the reason behind the dedication of Walking in the Air from a very good source. This band has class, this band can fucken play and Tarja (I don't give a fuck for those of you who can't stand her vocals) is a Goddess among mortals! :) Did they steal the show? You damn right they did!!!! Even with that quirky thing that was happening with Emppu's guitar :) Rank # 1

Symphony X - If Tarja is a Goddess then Sir Russell Allen is a God himself. Has to be one of the top 5 vocalist in metal today. OH and lets not forgot Michael Romeo (another top 5) and that is not taking away anything from the awesome playing of Rullo, Pinnella and Lepond....these fuckers are gifted...but unfortunetly the sound man wasn't! It somewhat ruined the show for me, the damn mic thing was annoying...still with all these problems they put on one hell of a show. I was running on fumes towards the end (blame that on like 7 hours sleep in like 2 days although the consumption of Guiness had a big hand in it as well) but I mustard every ounce of strength to make the epic 25 min journey of the Odyssey and that alone was worth the price of admission. Yes they rock but surely the day or should I rephrase that NIGHT, belonged to Nightwish.
Rank #2

:)

Cheers!

You want some tissues to wipe up those tears?:Smug: I am a huge Suffocation brutal death metal fan yet I also find greatness in prog and power. I sat peacefully all weekend long watching and getting into each band. Are you going to lock me out at the front door just because I enjoy much more brutal, yet still very good, music??
I saw that guy that kept running into you. He was wearing an Iron Maiden"Not Deicide" shirt if my memory is still working. He did deserve to have someone kick his ass I will agree but you are the type of person that almost had me wearing my Suffocation shirt to the 2nd day as I was curious if there were people that judge people on the band shirts they have. I could see you would be staring at this twisted tattooed evil metal fan and would never know he was one of the hugest Pain of Salvation fans on these shores.

Oh for god's sake, you people take things too damn far. Why pick a fight about this? We all know that dude was an ass, no matter what shirt he was wearing.:ill: It was simply an observation which was based on experience. Bring your friends, we need more exceptional death metal fans at the show!

Oh yeah, back to the topic at hand - I forgot to mention some things about the fest other than the bands & attendees...

FOOD - This was a HUGE change-for-the-better! Having The Vinyl open this year was so great! It was nice not having to leave for food before the next band (eventhough this ended up nipping me in the butt, for anyone that read my post on the Day 2 opinion thread) I remember after the fest last year people were suggesting a hot dog stand.. and while that would have been acceptable, I'm much more thankful for the restaurant! The only difficult part was actually getting the workers to serve you!

Coat Check - Was there one this year? I didn't need it so I never looked for it, but I remember thinking that it was such a terrific idea last year. I hope that this idea continues in years to come - I'm sure it will come in very handy!

Vendors - Thank you for putting The End Records at the opposite end of the concourse! That made all the difference in the world (and made it easier for people to access the restrooms!) Having all that open space at the far corner of the hall was really great for people who wantd to hang out but not be in the way.

Another change regarding the vendors that I liked was the covers over the display tables! I didn't think there was a problem with theft last year (part of what makes the PP crowd so great!) so I hope the covers weren't put there for that reason. I liked the covers because it made for a nice clean surface to use while making your purchases and bagging up merchandise!

Oh yeah - more women's shirts, please! Long sleeved women's shirts with lots of artwork, not just the logo across the chest :)

Parking - I still didn't have any trouble at all and I only paid $3 for a spot that was a block away! :D

Venue - I love the Earthlink Live! With the few changes to help with the crowd flow, it has become a terrific venue with everything you could need! If there's a way to fix the congestion problem at the mini-bar with everyone's favorite bartender, the venue would be perfect! As for the actual performance area - I have zero complaints! Like no other venue I know of, there isn't a bad seat in the house!

Staff - The staff at the venue were great! The tenders at the bars within the Earthlink were all terrific. I was glad to see that the girl was back! She's really nice and a good worker! The staff in The Vinyl seemed very overwhelmed with all the PP crowd spilling in. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to get food at the bar. The bathroom attendants are great! I was happy to see the lady in the women's room again as well! Some people don't like the idea of an attendant but I definately do! Those bathrooms would be so filthy if it weren't for them keeping it cleaned and stocked! I had a problem with my contacts during Evergrey and thankfully the attendant had some saline solution! That might not be a big deal to you, but it saved me from missing the rest of the show!

Temperature - I've read that people were getting cold during the end of day two. I spent the festival on the floor and near the front, so I never felt the chill. Perhaps the AC was cranked to keep us Floor Monsters cool without thinking what it would do to the majority of attendants who are seated.

Atlanta - I think it's the perfect international city for a show of this caliber. It's so easy to get there and is located rather well for travelers from Europe & South America. Glenn, if you decide to sell more tickets for this event and move it to a bigger venue - please not the Tablernacle. There's only a few good seats in that house.

Thanks Glenn, you've done it again! I think we all know that PPIII can't be beat, but this year was absolutely amazing! This is definately the best metal festival in the country!

~Sh0k~

I was on the floor for Rage, and it was not cold at all. I guess it was colder in the seats. But seriously, I would accept a 50 degree temp before having no A/C or something like that. I can take coldness so much before a temperature that makes me sweat. That's the problem with the northeast, they don't use the A/C enough, but they do in the south. Maybe that was part of the problem, I don't know, but I really did not notice it being too cold.

Guess I'll give a quick rundown of my impressions. Overall I thought the festival was a great success, more so than I had even expected considering that PP3 had almost the perfect lineup last year and while this year's lineup was good I went in not quite as excited as last year. But the great thing about this festival is there are always so many pleasant surprises. I think Earthlink Live is a great venue and agree with the welcome changes others have mentioned such as the vendor arrangments and traffic flow improvements this year. As for temperature, I was never cold but my wife was a bit chilly during Rage's set. I think that may have been because the arena was one-half to two-thirds empty by that point and you didn't have the body heat of 1200 people warming the place up.

Redemption - I thought they were pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised hearing them live after not being impressed with what I heard from the CD. They've got a new singer, right? I really disliked the vocals on the CD but thought the vocals were fine live.

Mercenary - We skipped this one. Sorry, I just can't get past the vocals and yes I really have tried. Just not for me.

Vanden Plas - These guys rocked, I was really impressed. Like Threshold last year, these guys to me sound even better live than they do on the studio material I've heard, they sound less polished/overproduced live and I like it. I'll have to pick up their live CD.

Nightwish - One of the highpoints for me, they were so awesome. Like Devin Townsend last year, this was a band who I had never listened to before the lineup was announced, but I've come to be a huge fan in the meantime and have all their CD's now. The crowd really seemed to be into them (I know I was), and they put on a hell of a performance. Sound quality was top-notch, also.

Symphony X - One of my favorite bands, and I was really impressed by their performance. Russell Allen and Michael Romeo totally blew me away with their ability to perform such demanding material live. Unfortunately they literally blew me away also, the sound was too fucking loud. Also, after going totally berzerk during Nightwish I was running out of steam by they time they took the stage so the energy level just wasn't quite there. Still, I'm glad I finally got to seem them live and hope to again in the future.

Pagan's Mind - Excellent performance, great set, and they sounded good. Man, that guy had a set of lungs. I think a lot of people were pleasantly surprised by them.

Secret Sphere - probably the only disappointment for me. Sorry to be harsh but I'm of the opinion that their new album sucks bigtime, so I wanted to hear more material from the earlier albums and was really let down by their set list. I also think the sound wasn't that great (guitars were drowned out), and that backup singer chick really grated on my nerves in some of the songs.

Circle II Circle - Probably the biggest surprise for me was how much these guys rocked. I like their album, but to me it's more guitar rock than heavy metal, so I wasn't sure how they would fit in. Needless to say my concerns were unfounded, they put on a great show. Zak's singing was amazing, and their guitar player really impressed me.

Evergrey - The other highpoint of the weekend for me, along with Nightwish. I've become a huge fan of this band over the last year or so, and couldn't wait to see them live. The crowd really got into them, and the setlist was great although I think the time spent on the entire Trilogy of the Damned could have been better used for something else (I would have liked to hear Madness Caught Another Victim). Fragments is one of my favorite songs from Recreation Day, so I thought it was cool that we got to hear them play that live for the first time. Soundwise it wasn't perfect, but not enough of an issue to be a distraction. These guys just blew me away.

Rage - my only exposure to them before this was from their "symphonic" period, which I liked but since I knew they wouldn't be playing that stuff live I wasn't sure how into them I would be. But they played a great set and really rocked the house, I was impressed. And OMFG, that drummer was a wildman; one of the better drum solos I can ever remember seeing, anybody who left before that really missed out.

Ok, please keep in mind that this review is coming from a girl who forgot to get new batteries for her hearing aids....

This was my first PPfest, and I am thoroughly impressed.

Nightwish was my original reason for showing up, and they definitely made the entire evening. I was down on the floor, so I didn't have any issue with heat/lack thereof. However, the oaf behind me was annoying me by reaching his sweaty body over my head. Thankfully, people next to me were slowly moving the other direction. :)

Vanden Plas - I have a new band to listen to. Their set was awesome, the vocals astounding. A bit long, but tolerable.

The first band of the night - didn't get their name - but I enjoyed them. They started off the evening quite well for me and allowed for a nice build-in to the rest of the bands. I had to work on Saturday, so I ended up missing Symphony X.

Saturday: because of work, I missed Secret Sphere (and apparently didn't miss much) and Pagan's Mind. However, I did make it for the tailend of Circle II Circle. Those guys were awesome, my partner (who can't stand anything but speed metal) like them. Sometime on Friday, John told me that they spent most of their time in Europe. Now, I can tell him it's because the US has this issue with horrid mainstream music, so the good stuff obviously has to go overseas. Anyway, Evergrey was great, a bit long for me - ended up leaving after the 4-5th song to chat with friends. Did get some good shots though. Came back in for Rage. Holy Frikkin Gods!!!!! They kicked kiester! The vocals were great and the drummer?! I joked with a friend that I viewed the local drummer for ShockPlate as a drum god....well, he's now been replaced. I'm still riding high!
