Does anyone else think the production on Practice is the worst of any record ever (not including St Anger). I feel like it totally ruins a great record, you can barely hear the riffing although the solos are as loud as fuck.

All those cds from the '80's sound like poop! Dig some more out and listen to them..That's where the whole thing started about vinyl sounding better than cds ...because back then they did!

Well I think the bass sounds pretty weird basically. I don't think I have heard another album with quite that bass sound. Very up in the mix and a strange sort of tone.

I'm not talking about the bass. I'm talking about the guitars - the riffs are barely audible, whereas on a metal record they should be right in your face. The title track has a great riff but you can barely hear it. I suppose it's the mix thats shit rather than the production.
And I said in my original post St Anger sounds like shit, PWYP is better than that admittedly.
What does ProTools have to do with the sound of the guitars?? :guh:

Practice IS pretty badly produced...it has the effect of making all the tracks sound pretty thin and almost indistinguishable, which totally fucks up the great songwriting. That albm really needs to be remastered.

Where would Opeth be without Protools? "Would you like fries with that?"

~I don't know much about production but I know that PWYP is prolly my least favorite partially because of that aspect. The guitars really don't have that Testament punch that they do on other albums. On a side note, my least favorite produced album has to be Low, the drum sound is really shit imo. Had the originally penned producer Vincent Wojno had his Visa approved this album would prolly be one of my favs. He gave Kreator's Cause for Conflict a real balls-out sound that they continue to this day.

While on the bass tone Stained by Living Colour has a similar tone on the bass although in a totally different context. And hey yeah the production on the guitars is thin and those clicky click drums are pretty annoying. Very Justice in the kick drum department.
The songwriting pulls the album through. Some great lead tones by Skolnick but that is a given.

Every time I listen to old Testament stuff two thoughts come to my mind. 1. fuckin´ great songs & 2. this would be unbelievable to hear with a Andy Sneap production like FSSD or The Gathering ...
