Preamp/Padding shootout using Deliverance DI pack

It is a popular technique with some engineers to engage the mic pad on a preamp and then run the channel gain knob higher so as to push the preamp into its nonlinear range in order to sweeten the sound. This is a technique that comes from mostly vintage hardware, but it could be applicable as a general rule depending on the design of the preamp in question. Today I am testing if my channel preamps are the type that benefit from this type of thing with a heavy guitar tone. This is tested on the rhythm guitars only, which are high passed at 80Hz and low passed at 12k only, no other processing was done to them.

I thought the tone on clip B suited the material better than A did.

A is mic straight in gain dialed as normal.
B is pad engaged and gain dialed to compensate.
